Just want to say a heartfelt thank you to Sibel the local vet who, at 3.30am on Saturday morning saved my dogs life. He was poisoned in his own garden. I have reported this to the police and they will be investigating.

Happy your dog was saved, Sibel is an excellent vet, she even looked at the dog that was dumped near us and checked her over as she was due puppies, at no charge.

Sibel is marvellous, full of compassion and we would go to no-one else. She and her staff have been great with our pets and all the strays we need help or advice for and often no ot little charge. Sibel and her staff explain everything in layman's terms too. We wish them every success in their new premises behind Smart + Catalkoy.

We also use Sibel who was recommended to us by a gentleman we met as our dogs landed at Ercan airport (came up on the carousel with the bags!). They are lovely, caring staff there who will do all they can to help your animals live the quality life they deserve. We love the new premises and hope the grumpy neighbours don't give them too much grief!

Well booitsme, those grumpy neighbours happen to be friends of mine. Whilst I appreciate that the vets themselves do a great job, it is a real shame they had to move their surgery into a villa in a small complex that is really not suited to large volumes of cars coming and going all day long. The neighbours have difficulty in swinging their cars into their garages as cars often block the way by parking directly opposite. If it was you living in this complex you would be cheesed off too. It is a residential complex, not a commercial one and the owners bought their villas thinking that it would be a quiet complex. Personally I think the builder and his mother allowed this to happen deliberately to pi*s off the other villa owners as they have some ongoing disputes but that's a topic for another day!!

I would also endorse the comments about Sibel. Very recently Sibel had the unfortunate task of putting to sleep our beautiful English BullTerrier, Bertie, both my wife and I were devstated and we wept bitterly even Sibel was also crying, she knew so well what our lovely dog meant to us. Thank you Sibel for your understanding at that very difficult time.

CasaCoco, surely the parking problem is caused by selfish drivers as there is a car park to the side of the surgery. With all the poisoning going on I would be delighted to have a vet to hand!

Booitsme - Yes, you are absolutely right, it is caused by selfish drivers which is why the residents are annoyed, but when they have said anything to the veterinary surgery about it, they (the vets) get a bit funny with them. It's therefore understandable that the residents get cheesed off. It's not even the parking, it's the amount of traffic going in and out all day. Don't get me wrong, I think it great to have a vets so close by, but it isn't really practical in a small residential complex. They would have been better off renting a place that was in a more open area, on it's own. After all, when you buy a property to live in 24/7, you don't really expect to find any of the villas being used for commercial purposes, it's not really fair. You have to put yourselves in the residents shoes and not just think about it from your point of view just because the surgery is in an area handy for you.

I also have to say that when I was in the complex last week, the sign for the car park was actually lying on the floor in the road part so for any new customers, they would not know to park at the side of the villa!

Quarmby - I forgot to say, my heartfelt condolences to you about your dog, I know what you must be going through right now, having gone through the heartache myself over the years, 3 times actually! The first time was 14 years ago when my beloved German Shepherd died of a ruptured tumour at midnight (no vet was available at that time), and there's not a week that goes by when I don't think of him, even now. Time will heal your loss and your memories will take over and give you comfort. I personally think the best thing is to go right out and get another dog (if you haven't already got another at home) as this will help you get through your grief in the present time and give you someone else to focus on. That doesn't mean you will forget your old friend though.

CasaCoCo, I had the pleasure of having dealings with Sibel recently, she was fantastic to us in a very difficult time. What was not so good was the Jock who lives opposite to the surgery shouting and swearing at me about how he hated the vets being there. the Police were called and he was told to behave or spend the night in jail, When i turned up next day he was nowhere to be seen, what a brave man !

BigMart - I have no doubt that the vet is wonderful, as most vets should be. That is a completely different issue really. The 'Jock' as you so rudely call him, owns his villa and lives on the complex and has a right to be able to gain access to his own driveway as and when he wants. If he was shouting and swearing at you, it was probably done out of frustration and was not meant personally but you should appreciate that the villa residents (owners) have rights of access. If he was not around the next day, it probably means he was either out or possbily asleep, but why should he have to be there when you visit? He isn't lying in wait for visitors to come by, he does have a life you know! The residents are very nice people but are only human and ask for consideration when people bring their cars into the complex, it's not really much to ask for. A little understanding on the visitor's part would be appreciated even if they are bringing sick animals for treatment.

CasaCoco - Good advice about going out and getting another dog. It must have been awful not being able to get help for your dog - after all they are part of our families. When my last dog died I went and got another pup, same breed but who looked completely different as I didn't want to keep comparing new with old. Just hoping ours hangs in there a bit longer as he's 14 and has bounced back many times!

Believe me when you have had bullterriers, you cannot go out and just replace them with another pup. I knew Bertie , I classed him as my "best" friend, he was the most gentle bullterrier anyone would wish to meet, and I for one will miss him. I've had bullies most of my life, bred them and shown them, and my last one came out to Kibris and is buried in my garden. He lived until he was 14. As for Sibel and her practice, instead of arguments, put up a notice outside your gate saying No Parking ,like other people do.

My apologies if I woke up any residents at about 3.15 am last Saturday, but my dog was dying - I didnt use the car park, my dog is very large and I needed to be as close to the door as possible.

Adagirl - sorry to hear about your dog. Does the vet work 24hrs then? Just curious as trying to get a vet out of hours in Bahrain is nigh on impossible, they seem to be more concerned with their social life after hours! Booitsme - thank you for your kind words. Unfortunately my dog was only 7 years old, but along with hip dysplasia, tumours are quite common in German Shepherds so I'm told. It was tragic and was the worst night of my life. I was left bereft for months and even now have the occasional weep. That night (1995) has haunted me ever since. Louthlass - yes residents could put up signs, but that doesn't necessarily mean that visitors will adhere to them. I doubt very much if the residents mind occasional visitors in the middle of the night if it's an emergency situation, they are not that heartless, it's more the daytime volume of traffic that's seems to be the issue. Of course, emergencies will always take precedence over any gripe about parking at any time.

Firestarter, I don't go South, but I understand from most people I know in the bullterrier world, these dogs are obtained through puppy farms. Besides which, it is illegal to smuggle dogs into the TRNC.

casaCoco, I think that some vets will rally round when its an emergency, but I don't think theres a 24 hour emergency vet as such. Within 30 minutes of being poisoned he was on a drip - I couldn't have had better service. I also have the antidote at home now, just in case........

adagirl - hope your dog is recovering ok now? It's terrible. Perhaps everyone should get an antidote from the vets just in case? Are all these dogs being poisoned by the same substance each time? I just wondered if there was a pattern in all of this, i.e. the same person doing all of this??

Lanate is the most "popular" poison, but the amount of antidote should be given according to weight of the animal. Thats why its best to take your pet into the vet and buy it from her direct after the animal is weighed. I do not think there is a pattern to the poisoning where I live, just someone who doesn't like dogs and is determined to have an animal free zone!!!

I was just thinking that if every dog owner had some of the antidote, it would just save a bit of time in getting it administered to their pet. Owners could pre-weigh their dog and buy the substance accordingly? It's one thing to leave poison around for stray dogs (which I don't for one minute condone) but it's another when pets are being poisoned in their own gardens, I really feel for these owners. I hope you can find out who is responsible sooner rather than later.

What an awful thing to happen adagirl, could i ask you in what area you live, I am in Catalkoy and am always worried about someone throwing poison in the garden. It is so disturbing to think that dogs are not even safe in their own gardens. So glad your dog is on the mend!!

Yes frankedad it was awful, he heard a noise outside and wanted to go investigate (he's very quiet - but always alert) I thank God that he is allowed to sleep in my bedroom. I let him out, and went back to bed. less than 10 minutes later he was back in my bedroom, frothing at the mouth and shaking - then his legs gave way........... I just put him in the car and drove to Pet Life.

I too have reason to thank Sibel for her compassion and heart felt wishes after losing my 7 year old rottweiler just 6 months ago, after being on a drip every day for 6 weeks. At one stage we thought he was on the mend as he bounced back, but soon his lungs began to collapse and the only thing we could do was to put him out of his misery. Sibel was great she came to the house and we were able to say goodbye in private. He laid his head on my lap and passed away peacefully. Sibel cried with us as she had become attached to him after such along time of treating him. Sibel, Emma and Ingrid were great all the way through his illness and kept our spirits up day after day. I would recommend Pet Life to anyone!!!!!
