Fire near to Pissouri yesterday got to within 1/4 mile of my brother-in-laws villa before the helicopters and Firemen were able to put it out. Pictures taken from the balcony at the villa can be seen on the Pissouri Village website.

They just can't be like us in the North and have a normal BBQ can they!!!!!!

Have just spoken to my brother-in-law and he says they think that the fire was started by somebody burning their fields. Now where have we heard that before I wonder!

"They just can't be like us in the North and have a normal BBQ can they!!!!!!"

If you were here in 1995 you would know what devastation was caused to the Kyrenia district byt a fire which even made the UK TV news at the time. It lasted 2 days and denuded the mountain range above 500m of all trees as well as causing considerable damage to property. Fire is not something to be joked about to try to score a petty political point

Our first vist to the island was the next year and it was not a good sight. The re-growth is remarkable.

Arek Naw,

Sorry if I offended you I wasn't making lightly of the fact that fire on an island as dry as this is a real risk, nor was I trying to score a petty political point. It was a joke between my brother-in-law and myself about the BBQ.

What he said was "we know how to BBQ in the south" but then on a serious note said their villa stank of smoke and also they both had really sore throats this morning from the smoke.

So once again I must stress that I did not mean to cause offense.

I believe the EU banned the stubble or crop burning 10 years ago because of the dangers and the additional CO2 damage to the environment
