I had to change some Scotish 20 pound notes today, the man in the hut at Alsancak would not touch them, Credit west would not either ! Exchange bureau on way into kyrenia on the right did change them but the rate was 2.41 instead of 2.49.

Why ??

I don't think it helps that there are several different types - each bank printing its own. We had the same problem in Turkey many years ago - turned into a very cheap holiday as my other half had taken all his money in Scottish notes and we couldn't change it anywhere. Saying that not everyone in England wants to accept it either.

i have had so much problems trying to change scottish money here. They say that they only accept sterling, which enrages me more seeing as the Scottish notes are the only ones that say sterling on them, the english ones say pounds! At least it used to be like that, english ones may well say sterling on them now, but i dont think so. I have had this problem all over the world and i really dont know why. Its hard for me to get hold of english notes in scotland too, have to ask all the shops when i go in to buy something to check their stashes so we can swap!!

In England, they wont even accept Scottish money on the royal mile at bucky palace to buy a flippin ice cream!!! So if the queen dont accept them, who will!!!

Nigel

We had this problem also. I went to speedy cash down Girne high street who did told me he didn't take them because they did not know who the issuing bank was. I then pointed to the huge picture on the wall behind him with a Royal Bank of Scotland travellers cheque on it and asked him if he accepted these to which he answered "yes". So I told him the RBOS notes where the same and he changed them no problem and gave me the proper rate.

Sheesh, you were lucky! The only way i used to be able to change them was to send them with a guy who changed them in the south. I have never managed to convince anyone that it is on fact legal tender!

Just a thought, what would happen if they were Clydesdale notes? Would he have changed them then?

This nonsense of not changing Scottish notes has been going on for over 20 years. I used to change them for either tl or sterling and when going back to UK take them to change there. Sometimes people from Scotland had all their money in Scottish notes. Also other customers going back used to swop with them. Other thing that is annoying is not being able to cash an English cheque - only at Sun in Kyrenial. They say it takes up to 4 weeks to get the money. Most exchanges have UK accounts so anybody going back could bank them, that is as long as you know he person changing he cheque is reliable.

Trudy I have no idea if it had been Clydesdale notes what would have happened.

A couple of years ago I was in Surrey on business for a I tried to give a barman a Scottish pound note which of course are still issued by the RBOS. He looked at it and told me he didnt accept it. When I asked him why he told me that there were too many forgeries going about

Scottish bank notes are only legal tender in Scotland and always have been. Its the same with Northern Irish notes.

Although many places in the UK take them I have never been in any other country that will.

Little Nige the best way to get them changed is to find out if any Scots in the hotels and ask thm if they can swop for English ones.

Scottish and English notes in the UK

The Scots can refuse the English notes & visa versa I used to make sure that I got rid of all my Scottish money on my weekly trips North before flying back to England

A Scottish colleague years ago before automated car parks used to proffer a Scottish £5 or £10 on leaving the car park the attendant would often refuse it and then let him off paying as he had no other money( he Did !!)

About 10 years ago some Canadians were quoted a higher exchange rate for their Scottish money by their Canadian Bank .

In closing RBS & BoS have both failed and had to be bailed out by the government .

Alex Salmond in the last two years wanted Scotland to join Eire and Iceland as the Celtic tigers of European economy .

There seems to be some confusion here. Scottish banknotes are not legal tender even in Scotland. Only Bank of England issued notes are legal tender in the UK by act of Parliament and have to be accepted (even by the Scots). Scottish banknotes are issued by commercial banks and are not legal tender as they are not backed by the Treasury or Bank of England.

They are however acceptable by most organisations and individuals in the UK on their own merit but do not HAVE to be accepted. In view of the banking crisis it's no wonder that Scottish banknotes are treated with circumspection as they are commercial paper and as such are not covered by the UK Treasury.

The hardest place to try and use Scottish bank notes is England. We have travelled to several countries including Italy, Austria, Germany, Andorra, Spain and even the ROC and had no bother exchanging for the then CY£. The easist way to get UK Pounds in Scotland is to go into a bank and ask?

In the Middle East you get the same problem, different rate for Scottish and English currency, I was told that it's because they have to send the Scottish further by post. So I blame the English Postal Service, but then I blame the English for anything I can, it's hereditary you know !!!

An old age pensioner in Peterhead lost her husband and went to the newspaper to put in an obituary. On asking how much it was the girl behind the counter told her it was £5 for 5 lines. The wife gave the following advert.

Bill Reid

fae Peterheid

is deid

The girl told her to she had 2 lines still to use so she changed the advert to the following

Bill Reid

fae Peterheid

is deid.

Scotland has 80% of Europes oil reserves.

Countries with currencies backed with oil reserves are triple A rated.

How much does that make the English £ worth?

And the pipelines are split between Scotland and England i.e. Scottish North sea and North sea to Humberside but no point in raising this issue. If England were too admit to taking Scottish revenue they would also have too pay back in the region of 13 Billion pounds to Scotland and that was worked out back in 2004 so never gonna happen.

I get the feeling you have something against the Scots, Wanderer but then you are probably a typical English biggot, Oops I am being a Nationalist again, It's hereditary don't you know.

There is also difficulty in changing a £20 english note with a small tear in it - it was refused as it was slightly torn - it had both serial nos - the sort you get cellotaped up from the bank, only not quite so bad. Today I heard from a lady who went to the GAU to pay fees and they wouldnt accept a 50 euro note because of a small tear. Yet when you go elsewhere to change it there is no problem- so what's theirs? Possibly makes their piles of notes untidy or something?
