He wouldn't end up with that record if he was playing today or will anyone else. The game is reffereed and governed differently nowadays.

good question glencoe,

ukturk probably got it right however its not a record I would want to brag about.

I do not condone dirty or professional foul play but would in the modern game be a little concerned about a players committment and determination, that he could avoid being booked.

That is not a slur on players like Lineaker, B.Charlton and the likes. Great players and gentlemen, and I have to agree with JamesB it must be impossible to avoid getting booked in the modern game.

Gary Lineker was a great ambassador for the game, with an unblemished record as the gentleman of his age - never booked or sent off in a game in over 600 appearances and modest too. He equalled the all-time record of England goals scored with Bobby Charlton - 49 with 80 caps!

hi glen

are you sure!!!! i can only think of gary linekar who played for 12 years without a yellow or a red, jamie he did not actually equal charlton's goal record of 49 goals, he got 48 goals because of turnip graham taylor thus ending his chance of beating his record who later did not pick linekar again he then retired from international football because of falling out with the tunip

it was not tom finney because he used to play before 1970 thats when the yellow and red card was introduced in the 1970 world cup, it could be sir trev

come on put us out of our misery!!!!

UK Turk ! U sure ?? I think you might find the Lineker equalled Bobby's recorded and duffed a penalty against brasil to get his 50th before being dropped by the turnip ? I might be wrong and owe you a pint if i am !! I'm still going with Tom Finney, was never booked or sent of regardless of the cards being introduced.

Cheers

hi jamie

im 100% sure mate, you are right about his missed penalty but that was to equal bobby charltons record, even thou it took charlton 106 caps to acheive this, where it took linekar 80 caps to reach 48, ive provided a link to his factfile

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Linekar

i was thinking of a english player, your clue gave it away that he was not english but british, so it has to be john charles who played for wales and was made famous at leeds, he dont just hold the record for no cautions also he was the first british player to sign for a foreign team juventus and also a record transfer fee of that time

another clue

the year after England won the WC he captained the Scotland team that beat England 2 -1 but was only on the pitch for 6 minutes before he was carried off with his leg broken in three places,

he was capped 40 times - 407 league appearances with Rangers - 51 appearances with Stirling albion & 59 with corby town and he finished up at Stranraer
