The place - New Sheraz, Cattlekoy.

Those present - Me, my miserable Missus (don't ask), Garry Monger, Garry Monger's missus...

Ambiance - Bit too much like a school dinner hall for my liking, decor ok.

Tucker - Well they were off to a looser when Garry Monger's missus clocked the small portion sizes - she asked if this was a kids portion - Food quality ok, but felt they'd forgot to add something to make the flavour of the curries perfect...

Price - Seemed ok...

Overall - You know you have a problem, when Garry Monger's missus wants a kebab on the way home from a restaurant. Small portions and "fair to middling" tucker mean we are unlikely to return...

Verdict - a Neg Nick 7 / 10

Taj Mahal - past golden lady at Alsancak, small place on ground floor of building where Woodys used to be. Nice sized portion and good curries. Its only small but we've found it good. He sells at Lambousa market and stuff usually goes fast.

We went to the Punjab on Thursday night after hearing good reports.

Service could not be faulted.

Starters were OK

Main course I ordered Korma Sauce with rice it was like eating a plate of lentils it was just awful

Hubby ordered Balti he said tastless

Friend ordered Jalfrazi he only ate half

Only my other freind managed to eat all hers but she said it was because she was starving.

Won't be back.

Keep trying different Indian restaurants as they open but always revert back to Jashans still the best in my opinion in TRNC

Friends took some visitors to The Courtyard, said it was good, but not

a patch on my curries! Maybe I should start up a restaurant myself (joking!)

Taj Mahal at Alsancak are doing all their chicken curries with rice for a takeaway price of 14TL. Excellent price and in my experience always very good food.

I don't think there is any such thing as a decent curry in TRNC - have tried them all except Taj Mahal in Alsancak. All taste the same i.e. bland a tasteless. If you want a decent curry see excellent balti recipe below.

Will try Taj Mahal this week and hope it is as good as everyone says.

Chicken Balti

Sauce Ingredients

2lb roughly chopped onions

2 Tins Chopped Tomatoes

6 Cloves Garlic chopped

1 inch Ginger chopped

1 teaspoon Salt

1 teaspoon Tumeric

1 Teaspoon Garam Masala

5 Whole Cloves

4 Cardamon Pods (remove shell and just use seeds)

1 Cinammon Stick

2 Tablespoons of Oil

2 Green Chillies chopped

1 Tablespoon fresh Coriander

2 Pints Water

Meat Ingredients

Chicken or Lamb (use Neck Fillet )

Oil for frying

1 Teaspoon Tumeric

1 Tablespoon Fresh fenugreek Leaves (or dried methi leaves)

1 teaspoon Garam Masala

Seasoning to taste.

To Make Sauce

Fry onions in oil until soft

Add Cloves, Cardamon pods and Cinammon

Mix in Tomatoes and remainder of spices

Balti recipe continued

Add water and cook for a further 20 minutes.

Remove Cinammon Stick and allow to cool

Put sauce in a blender until smooth.

This sauce will make about 6-8 portions.

To Cook Meat.

Use a portion of meat for each person e.g. 1 Chicken Breast each

Fry Chicken/Lamb in oil for 10 minutes

Add Garam Masala, Turmeric and Fenugreek and cook for a further 10 minutes (don’t let it burn!)

Add more fresh chillies if you want it hot.

Add about 2 ladles of sauce per portion (or as much as you want)

Heat until piping hot.

Add Fresh Coriander and serve in a bowl with Naan Bread

ENJOY

Chicken Balti recipe

For some reason it chopped a line off:

Cook for 10 minutes after adding tomatoes and before adding water

Agree with littlelady Raj in Ozankoy is the best indian by far. Ask Mrs Monger to visit there and I am sure she will agree and not have to stop for a kebab on the way home

All this curry talk is pointless, I say its down to personal taste, I prefer Taj Mahal, won't bore you with the details, but Jeff is obviously doing it right because as from the 1 Sep he is taking over the old Light of Bengal. I personally don't care who likes what, I know what I like so I just enjoy.

I hear that the Raj at Ozankoy is to close at the end of August and reopen as a Turkish restaurant, because it is in a private house and only Turkish restaurants are allowed in private houses.

Well I suppose the upside of this, is competition is good for the punter, I wish I could get my partners from my Indian restaurant over here, I think the local ones would need to up the game a bit, I think yes, far to many for the population size, probably not to bad in summer, but the custom will be a bit thin on the ground in winter, See comments on The Indian Restaurant Debate , topic

Very subjective indeed, been to many "indian" restaurants, visited the Sheraz again last night had a fantastic meal, the Lamb balti was to die for.

In the past 3 weeks i have visited both Happy Valley and Sheraz twice. Both times i was very unsure about Happy Valley, with good reason to! Very dusty and dirty, the food was very unsatisfying, in fact, we left half of the meal, the best bit about it was the poppadoms and dips, but then how can anyone go wrong with them!? Also the service was slow, had to wait about 15 mins for drinks.

Sheraz on the other hand was lovely, both times, the service was good. The setting clean and inviting, in fact, personally with my 5 guests, we all thought this was one of, if not the best, indian restaurant we have been to in N.Cyprus. Living in Kyrenia we have only been to a few in the lapta area, but so far Sheraz has beaten them all. Punjab did come close, but like i said, nothing so far has been better than Sheraz.

Happy Valley i would never recommend, dusty, untidy and dirty, and that was before we see the tiny kitchen!

So far, Sheraz every time from now on ! !

Taj Mahal everytime, same taste, consistent, large portions , good service and very good value for money, 25 lira for all prawn meals and you get 12 large prawns. Jeff is a friend, so I will recommend him, have tried others but always head back to Jeff's, won't say anything about other curry houses, but my taste buds prefer Taj Mahal. Give it a try,but please if you don't enjoy any part of your meal, please let Jeff know, he will rectify anything you may not be happy with, remember its all down to personal taste.
