Akrotiri is located on the Southern Peninsula of Cyprus, 20 km from Limassol. RAF Akrotiri originated on 1st July 1955, when the first 30 personnel were posted into the dry rocky scrubland. By the end of August 1956 the station strength had reached 260 Officers and 2864 other ranks. Today there are approximately 850 service personnel. RAF Akrotiri is one of the few full-scale RAF bases left outside the UK. The base attracts many visiting aircraft including the Red Arrows who use it as their Winter training ground. The unit has many amenities including a gymnasium, a swimming pool with a removable roof, various sport and recreational clubs, including football, rugby, netball, hockey, high ropes, low ropes, horse riding and a multitude of water-sports that take place on base. There is a new education facility on base for personnel and their dependants, along with hairdressers, coffee shops, thrift shops and a craft shop. You will find free broadband internet access in the HIVE, and plenty of children’s activities including cubs, brownies, ATC and a very successful youth club. There are the usual mess facilities at Akrotiri including a junior ranks alcohol free lounge and an all ranks bar.

I believe it is UK administered area in the South, somewhere near Limassol. There is definately a RAF base there, but I don't know very much else about it.

RAF Akrotiri is situated within the Episopki Sovereign Base area, you cannot get onto the base unless you are in the Armed Forces (or with service personnel). Before you come to the RAF base there is the village of Akrotiri where quite a number of Greek Cypriots live.

Good info paul90, I was at the base with the RAF in the 70s it covers a large area, was in full swing during the conflict 74. The village then was little more than a chanty town, visited the place last year and could'nt believe the changes arround the area, unfortunatly time moves on. D.N
