I have some lovely tenants renting off me in Alsancak and they have just had a beautiful baby. Unfortunately they have just been told that the baby has Downsyndrome. They had the tests and were concernced at one stage but the doctor told them that it was nothing. They are obviously delighted and distraught at the same time. They will need to go for further tests in Turkey and treatment etc and money is very tight. I was thinking of setting up a box in my office or maybe an account with Turk bank where people could donate maybe 10 or 20 lira to be given to the parents to help. If anyone would be intrested in helping in anyway, could they please contact me on wise.lydia@hotmail.com or tel 0533 848 5152 and I have a meeting with Linda at Turk bank tomorrow. Thank you, Lydia.

Whatever people say about the brits (I am one) they tend to get bad press, but wherever they are they always give their time and money to charity and help with local fundraising which is usually used for the local population. I don't know any other nation that gives of their time and money so generously. Lydia, well done.

Hello everyone, thank you so much for the people who have responded already. I have just spoken with Lilli at Guidos and she is more than happy to take any contributions for the family. We will try to think of fund raising as well but just to start them off would be great. Again thank you for you support.

How good is their English? I am happy to spend time looking up websites that will give advice and maybe have chat rooms et cetera - when I can get some cash to you, I will do so........I have a friend with two Downs children, one her own, one adopted - they are afflicted to very different degrees - it will take time for the Cypriot Doctors to ascertain just how badly afflicted the little one will be - my heart goes out to mum and dad - life will be hard, but babe will grow up to be the most tactile loving soul - they must just think 'Pollyanna' - find the best in a trying situation.........

Dear Ms Garnet, you are very thoughtful, they only speak a little English and are in shock and as you say it will take time for them to see how bad things are. I would also like to thank John for Cyprus solutions and Chrys Ashworth from Alsancak Insurance for their donations.

We'll be over at end of July and will provide some £ support. I will bring some information over also. Not sure if anyone could do some translation over there.

This is some good starter information from a really reliable info source. Is there anyone out there who would be prepared to put some translation work in. I'll continue to look for some translated pieces.

I would just like to thank Mr and Mrs Strange for their donation. I have not yet opened a bank account as Liz at Guidos is happy to also collect donations. However Linda from Turk bank and myself are looking to do a tandem jump from Karmi to raise money. Hopefully we will get lots of sponsorship and you will be able to find forms in the bank, Guidos, Equity Plus, The DVD shop in Alsancak, Taj Mahal and anywhere else I can think of from Monday!! All support appreciated.

I have sent an email to Izzet asking this to be made a sticky thank you. I will soon be chasing everyone for sponsorship so watch out. I have also had an email from the owner of the Dog Racing in Lefkosa and if we arrange a day at the races he will give a percentage of the takings to the couple which would be fantastic. I will let you know more when a date has been arranged. Thank you again for all your support. Lydia

D'you have a paypal account? I'm in the UK but would like to help as well. I have a daughter with Cerebral Palsy so know how tremendously hard the first few months will be, emotionally as much as anything else.

Just an update. The parents have gone to Turkey for a few days for more tests. As soon as the article has been done for Cyprus Today I will be asking everyone for sponsorship as I will be doing a tandem jump (I am terrified of hights)!! and then we will arrange a day at the dog races. So please if you are passing Guidos or Equity Plus in Alsancak donate anything you can however small. Thank you, Lydia
