Hi Thomas - having spoken to the Great Man (in case he thinks I'm stealing his thunder) Dalga means wave or ripple, kyran is apparently someone's name.

The word is actually Dalga kıran sokak.

Ltd is right about Dalga being wave but because the second word is not spelt properly it is a bit confusing. Kıran meand breaker.

So The whole thing means Wave Breaker road.

ı thought it was spelt wrong because there is not such a word as kyran so i automatically thought it mite be someones name dalga kıran sokak sounds correct

I'll get in first, but am afraid I can't help you - looked in the dictionary but no enlightenment except kerim means kind/generous.

İ know this is an old thread but İ was told by a TC friend that Sht or Şehit on a street sign refers to a person who has died whilst serving the Turkish State. Therefore İ would think that Kerim Beşok is the name of a person.

joandjelly are correct sht is short for sehit meaning a Muslim who has died for Islam or in this case someone who has died in service of the state. Not necessarily a member of the military.



Is a term you will find on many grave stones and as part of the name of a cemetary.

Indeed. But in Northern Cyprus it is mostly/often used where Şht (short for Şehit) means "martyr". (Off topic but certainly important and interesting: three villages in TRNC are known as "Şehitler" ("Martyrs") - anyone knows why?).

This is correct. Ercan Airport is also named after a Şehit (a pilot). Many road names in the TRNC are named after them.



If it is Firtina Sokak then it yes it will be Storm Street

As for Lemonia..the Turkish for lemon is limon (Cypriots use the word eksi (ekshi) when talking about lemons so you may come across this quite often!

Breezyboy, the Turkish word for tree is ağaç (pronounced "aaah-ach) but I don't think there is a direct translation for Tree House (ev) other than Ağaç Ev. Ağaçlı Ev is a way of saying "with trees) if that helps
