As we all know if you drop a glass or plate here on the tiles it shatters into thousands of pieces and bounces everywhere, so chances are one of us is going to end up with a sharp piece of glass slashing us or embedding into a part of exposed skin.

Our aims are

a) to protect ourselves by wearing disposable gloves if available

b) to contol the bleeding

c) to prevent shock

d) to minimize infection to the wound. then arrange for an ambulance or transport to nearest hospital.

Firsly remove or cut away any clothing near the wound

Apply direct pressure with your fingers and a sterile dressing, or any clean cloth.

Raise and support the limb above the heart.

Lay the patient down to reduce blood flow to the injury site, and minimize shock

leaving the original dressing in place, bandage firmly. If bleeding comes through the 1st dressing and bandage don't remove it apply another on top and keep applying pressure.

now phone 112 for ambulance to nearest hospital.

Hi just had an e-mail from Cathy. Who has quite rightly pointed out that I missed something!! Thanks again Cathy.

If there is a foreign object e.g. glass, knife etc stuck in the wound DO NOT attempt to pull it out. Apply pressure above it or if it is possible squeeze wound edges firmly together around the object. And finally remember to check the circulation beyond the bandage and keep watching for seepage.
