In Life hospital in Lefkosa at the moment is a girl after a car accident.

She is in terrible condition and needs a lot of blood. Her blood type is very rare .

In the hospital they do not have this blood ( or not enough).

I received this information from my friend.

If you can help, contact the Life hospital in Lefkosa.

Thank you.

With 40,000-odd fit young soldiers in the north - and records of all their blood groups - I would have hoped they would have got what they need by now. Also pretty sure the Turkish forces medical branch will have a good blood bank with all types in stock. And have they appealed to the south?

None of this is political, BTW. It's just hard to tell with the Chinese whispers and gossip whether we have the full facts.

chinese whispers , what chinese whispers , why does everything from the north have to have a question mark about it for you guys.......... its simple , girl had accident , is in hospital , needs blood , were helping her get it through appeal and as of tonight appears that by tommorrow we would have achieved that , simple facts

OK Tommy, let's not call it Chinese whispers. Let's just come out with it and ask if Turkish armed forces have done anything to help this girl? Cos I have a sneaking suspicion this gravely-ill girl could have been operated on by now.

hey i lovekibris , the army option is always there but usually a last option , many i spoke to told me just go to the army barracks and they will get it for you asap , we already spoke to couple of high ranking guys , and if the donor appeal didnt work they would help , so yes the army is an option ,, as of this morning it seems the public appeal has been successful , thanks for your advice

Bless her, unfortunately I'm O Rh + or I would help. I am off to Lefkosa to give blood anyway (1st time on the island as we haven't been here long) can someone tell me if it is the "general" hospital that accepts blood donations at any time? Please let us know how she gets on and if there's any other help we can give

Hi booitsme,

We gave blood at Lefkosa Burhan Nalbantoglu Government Hospital.

straight through Gönyeli Roundabout coming from Girne,

hospital is further down the road on the left,

through gates,

blood donor building on right.

Two of us, in and out app 30 minutes

Hope this helps.

Well done everyone who has offered to donate via this thread. What a wonderful thing you are doing. Its just a pity it had to come down to a public forum asking for blood. I am sure this girl could have been operated on before now, I do feel a little sad for this little girl and worried.

Lets just hope and pray that your efforts are successful. A BIG HAND TO YOU ALL!!

My thoughts and prayers are with this little girl and her family, I regularly donate blood but unfortunately I dont have the right group to help this child, but I hope all out there not just in this case give blood as Navek said it takes 30min or less out of your month, and who knows who will need it next.

Can anyone tell me the reason why there is an age limit on giving blood? Surely in a life/death situation any will do to save a life.

Whistler,

Last year in the UK the NHS changed its policy's on the upper age limit of 70, so now almost anybody can give blood for as long as they are fit and able. The minimum age I think is still 17 or 18 but that may have changed as well. Also beind diabetic or having high blood pressure now doesn't bar you either.

The Blood Bank do not have a Database, but everyone that comes to the BRS sponsored Blood Donor Days is put on our database and that is how we manage to arrange donors to go to Lefkosa to give blood on such occasions.

tommy13,

I have no influence with the authorities in the north but given a child's life has been at stake here, I think it's scandalous that the health officials didn't go straight to the army when they realised their own blood bank was out of stock.

It's bad enough they allowed themselves to run out in the first place, but to expect a group of well-meaning and mainly elderly expats do the legwork when they have 40,000 young soldiers and numerous field hospital units available is unacceptable.

Could it be the case that far from being on the island purely to protect the few remaining Turkish Cypriots, the Turkish army are their for their own ends and have no intention of helping the civilian population, even when a child is at death's door. What happens next time?

This issue should be in the newspapers.

ilovekibris,

not sure if you know that whole blood and red cells have only a very short shelf life so can't blame the hospitals. in the UK it has taken many many years to build up a blood bank. (and we do in the UK still have not got sufficent supplies of certain blood groups) This country has neither the resources or the know how to go about this. it will only be through education (which has to be accompanied with money) And as an embargoed country how do we tackle this issue.

A friend for the last 2 years has been working on printing and making "health cards" which will have all your details including blood group. meds you are on, allergies etc. Initially for a small cost to cover printing, laminating, research ie a BP check so Dr's have a base line to work from. But he is hitting his head against a brick wall and all we need is a hospital or health group to work with us and we will have that database not just Brits but all nationalities on the island. If I knew how to poll tis

Continued

If I knew how to poll this on the forum I would.

Please administrators can you help me set this up to see how many ex-pats would be willing to be part of a database. And i will talk to Dr's on th island and see if this is a viable proposition.

Chris

p.s. I would welcome the help of other UK registerd nurses

The army do give blood, when my husband was doing his service his whole camp had to give blood every couple of months, he was also given a donor card with all his details on it which he still keeps in his wallet. But as soldiers come and go every 15 months or even less i really do not see how a data base for the Army would work.

This forum not just for politics

This little girl is too young to have had anything to do with the Turkish Army being in Cyprus nor for the deficencies in the TRNC . Could you not leave it alone and wish her all the best without using her situation to make a political point.

Nurseawful'

Good luck, quite often in the UK hospitals nearly run out of blood ,it wouldnt be the first time I was sent a card asking to donate soonest with the message that there was only a few days left of supply. But if you dont have a register ,you cant send out the cards.

It takes lots of donors for just one patient under surgery, sometimes all it takes is a bad weekend of accidents for blood stocks to become critical.
