Is there any kind of club for astronomy or star-gazing? I've found the website for the south's organization, but nothing for the north so far.

Hi Walterma, I too would be interested in an Astronomy club. The skies are so amazingly clear with very little light pollution at night in TRNC. Im moving over towards end of Summer from UK so would be interested.

Maybe we and others could start up a club etc.?

We are only regular visitors at the moment but if you set one up I know my partner would love to join you when he is over. We have already alocated space for the telescope at the villa.

Some like to watch the stars, some like plane spotting, some trains and so on, so I suppose there is nothing wrong with my hobby of bird watching

"I remember being in awe as I watched the waxing moon ride across the zenith of the heavens like an ambered chariot towards the ebony void of infinite space, wherein the tethered belts of Jupiter and Mars hang forever festooned in their orbital majesty."

As I looked at all this I thought: 'I must put a roof on the lavatory'." )

Tom,

I do know that you are well travelled and know a lot but I think you missed on this saying:

"Güzele bakmak sevaptır" which implies that it is a good deed (religiously meritious) to look at nice ladies. So as a good Moslem, I am only trying to comply

Good to hear from you, Nunu1, Sheila and Phil, Mamachina -- I'm glad that there's interest. We won't arrive ourselves until late summer and were hoping to buy a telescope locally after that. No experts us, but our five year old is crazy about astronomy and space lately.

The Big Man

I don't know of any shops in the North but apparently there are a couple in the South.

Hi all budding astronomers. I have a Meade ETX 125 over here, computer controlled and all the gizmos. it's a very good one but a devil to set up so that it follows the stars. Consequently I do not use it very much. Also the light pollution has increased dramatically in the last few years. Heat haze is common over here which doesn't help either.

It.s very good for observing the moon and planets. Jupiter was spectacular last year but now doesn't rise until the early hours.

Advice for would be purchasers of astronomical telescopes. Do not buy a cheap one that boasts hundreds of times magnification. The real key to a good telescope is it's light gathering ability. The larger the aperture the better. A sturdy tripod is a must. It should also be 'Polar mounted' to allow it to rotate with the earth so that the stars appear stationary in the view finder. Without a polar mount the stars you see rapidly drift out of view.

A good pair of binoculars is far superior to a cheap telescope.

Is there anyone in TRNC at the moment who has a Meade LXD75 or similar mount?

I am in Karsiyaka and have a problem with mine and would like to discuss it others.

I'm thinking of looking into the future. Has anyone got a strong pair of binoculars?

Iam returning to UK soon and im selling my Meade ETX125EC this telescope cost £1149 new and on a recent trip home ive had it professionally serviced by the Meade main agentThe ETX is based around one of the finest optical designs ever produced, the Maksutov Cassegrain enables ultra high resolution and contrast from a compact design. These optics will routinely outperform those of larger apertures almost equalling the performance of fine Apochromat refractors costing many times that of the ETX. Whether viewing fine Planetary detail such as Jupiters red spot or polar ice caps on Mars or viewing the tenuous detail in the great Orion nebula you can be sure the ETX will deliver the best views possible.
