The use of the nouns “Turkish Cypriot” and “Turkish Cypriots” has been banned on all programs broadcast by "state run" Bayrak Television network in northern Cyprus.

In the place of “Turkish Cypriot” the term “Turk of Cyprus”, will be used.

According to the Yeni Duzen newspaper, the director of Bayrak, Ozer Kanli, confirmed the bizarre decision.

“The expression Turkish Cypriots describe the persons who were born in Cyprus. But it does not include our compatriots who came to our island after 1974.

“The expression ‘Turk of Cyprus’ includes both the Turkish Cypriots and the Turks who came later to Cyprus and has a broader meaning.

"The term 'Turkish Cypriots' was used by foreigners. This expression started to be used during the latest period and such an expression never existed in Bayrak’s history,” he said.

According to Yenı Duzen, before 2004 the use of terms such as “Cypriots” and “Turkish Cypriots”, which were used by the “Platform this Country is Ours”, were for

Özer Kanlı is an extremist journalist and he was dead against the Annan Plan during the run up to the referandum. Now he is the new director of BRT State controlled radio and television group. What else could we expect from such a man?

Thin end of the wedge?

Turk of Cyprus or Turk of Turkey!

First step towards getting people used to Cyprus belonging to Turkey maybe?

Just a thought, not a point to argue over.

Posing: there are NO Turkish Cypriots. People who claim to be that, don't know their own history. They ARE Cypriot Turks.

Posing: There are NO Greek Cypriots either. They who claim to be that, should be called Greek speaking Cypriots.

I invite anyone interested to open another thread where we can discuss this issue. Please reserach and prepare your (quality) statements, please.

Yet another insult to the Turkish Cypriot people who the TRNC government clearly feel are unworthy of objective and balanced journalism. Who appointed this nonentity?

Wikipedia:

"Turkish people primarily live in Turkey; however, when the borders of the Ottoman Empire became smaller after World War I and the foundation of the new Republic; many Turkish people chose to stay outside Turkey's borders. Since then, some of them have migrated to Turkey but there are still significant minorities of TURKS living in different countries such as in NORTHEN CYPRUS, Greece, Bulgaria, Syria, Iraq, Republic of Macedonia, the Dobruja region of Romania and Kosovo (especially in Prizren). These TURKISH PEOPLE are not to be confused with the Turkish diaspora as they are considered to be 'native Turks' due to living in these countries for hundreds of years and thus are not immigrants."

Cont.

There are 800,000 Turks in Bulgaria. They settled there in the XIV - XV centuries (even before the Ottoman occupation of Cyprus).

They are referred to by several names such as "Turks in Bulgaria", "Turks of Bulgaria" and "Bulgarian Turks". Turkish Bulgarians? Nonsense!

Hi Magbs

Have you the link to that Wiki site..? it sounds like it was written by a Turk - as the Rep of Macedonia is referred to as the Former Yugoslav Rep of Macedonia - otherwise the Greeks get upset ! ;)

Hoo-hah! I am aware of Macedonia naming dispute, although think FYROM is a bit obsolete.

Here is the link:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkish_diaspora

Please look at this page also:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turkish_people

On the right you"ll see "Regions with significant populations" including Northern Cyprus with its 260,000 (2006 census) population.

I don't want to insult anyone, but really, it seems the name Turkish Cypriot is something unique. Another example is Crete. There is/was no such name as "Turkish Cretans" but rather Cretan Turks.
