Hi

Is it possible to take TRNC hired vehicle into the south, I have been told that the customs at the border will stop you as they do not allowed hired cars from the North to enter into the South. Can any one give me some advise on this.

many regards

Thats correct, TRNC cars have an easily identifiable number plate, a bright red one... They cannot cross the border. You could park your car in the car park near the crossing and have your passport ready, and then take a walk over.

But taking a TRNC car to south is a no no im afraid.

Meant to say TRNC hired cars cannot cross.

Of course your own can! But then there is the issue of getting it insured for use in the south!

I am sure that I read on here a couple of weeks ago that Birdrentacar are allowing their cars to cross. They will give you a letter to hand in at the border.

no longer a problem to take trnc hired cars over the border. You need to ask your hire company for the correct documentation and it costs about 30 euro even if its only for the day.

Not many of the TRNC car hire companies will allow you to take the car to the south

I didnt think even one did. They never used to. Obviously its changed and the odd one or two are allowing them over now.

Why would anyone want to go south - unless it's to see what the north will be like if the over development continues!!!

Hi exroyal

Take no notice of the negative replies on the board. I recently spent a month at my villa in May and hired a car from Birdrentacar. They allowed me to go to Larnaca and pick up family members when they arrived. I had a letter from them to give to the insurance people at Metahan. I was never even asked for it. All they required was the rental agreement, my passport and my driving licence. Car tax was issued free of charge. 3rd party insurance was 25 euros for a minimum of one month. People at the border couldn't have been more helpful. I had no problems whatsoever. Bird said if I wanted to take the family back to Larnaca to catch their flight home they would give me permission to take them. People in the tax and insurance offices confirmed to me that rules had changed about six months previous about rental cars travelling to the south. All you have to do is choose the company which will let you take their car over the border.

Hi all,

Many thanks for your replies it now seems that you can, the letter from the hire company what does it say and what language is the letter written in and for which side of the border cutoms is the letter for, then hopefully I can have one from my hire company, at this moment I do not know the companies name, it sounds daft but that's a long and different story.

Regards,

I've just had an e-mail saying that if you broke down on the south in a north hire car it would be up to you to get it back as recovery vehicles can not cross the boarder, and again you are only covered third party. :(

re msg 2

>>TRNC cars have an easily identifiable number plate, a bright red one<<

As do the "rump" RoC registered "tourist" ( rental cars) cars .. they both begin with a "Z"..

I remember reading that they plan to phase this out in the "south"..

I'm confused by what I'm hearing here - I thought the "rump" RoC weren't allowing "TRNC" reg'd hire cars over - but that's "old news"...

I hardly think it would be an oversight as "TRNC" red plated vehicles have only three letters "Zxx" and "rump" RoC ones would have four "Zxxx"

re message 17- the same rule applies when bringing a hire car from South to North although there was a similar thread a week or so ago on which somone claimed that if you hire through AVIS from UK it is possible to get full island insurance coverage. Can anyone verify this?

re msg 19

I see no reason why a recovery vehicle could not cross the green line !

I knew a GC with a car hire business who had to reclaim cars from the north - the hirer bore the cost of the time involved...

I, too would like to see the Avis contract .. they are normally REALLY expensive - relative to other local firms

What is important is the amount of cover - taking into account any CDW ( collision damage waiver) that [normally] does not apply when in "TRNC" in a "rump" RoC reg'd hire car.

If they really do offer this - then my normal advice - that taking a hire vehicle from south to north is fraught with potential - costly - headaches, would have to be modified - the premium might be worth it.

What is important to know.. if you have prang in a "rump" RoC car in the "TRNC"

Are you financially liable in any way to the Hire company?

The reason many hire car companies stopped allowing their cars to the south was because tourists were driving there and dumping the car at Larnaca in the car park, because it was cheaper than getting a taxi, leaving the hire car companies with no clue where their cars were.

Alot of things can happen if you cross the border in the car, including getting it back across if you have problems with the car!

All round it think its safer to either use a car of your own, cross on foot or if you are a holiday maker, fly to the south next time.
