Whenever I go to the beach I come back nice and tanned, I know the salt in the sea enables you to 'fry' in the sun after, but whenever I have a day by the pool I am paler than when I started?! Maybe zerochlor knows the answer...does the chlorine in the pool fade your tan/bleach the skin or is this a myth?

Many thanks

Natx

PS No I don't have anything more important to think about ;0)

PPS & I do use a high factor and am aware of skin cancer, moles etc already had 2 moles removed & checked!

Don't know if chlorine bleaches skin but I do know it has a very bizarre reaction with some hair dyes and henna! i henna my hair and used to go swimming regularly - that is until my hair turned GREEN!!!!! And I had to work with it like that as I didn't have time to try to dye it back to a more usual colour

Think it has been said before on this forum, but will repeat what a hairdresser told me: if your recently dyed hair turns green in a swimming pool apparently putting ketchup on it will get rid of this...!!!

Nat, I agree with your comments in message 1 completely! I used to go to the beach all the time in the summer but haven't gone in the sea round Girne since about 2003 because it got so dirty. I used to get a lovely tan though. For the last few years I have only been using pools and a tan has eluded me! On Monday I decided to try Kervansaray beach as all the reports now say the water is clean there. Today was my third day and ...............................I've got a tan!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My friends and I were joking on Monday that the chlorine in the pools must be acting like a bleach ie. keeping me pale!! I think what you're saying is absolutely true and I will not be returning to the pool again!!

and Mum - If you're reading this, before you start, I'm using factor 30 on my face and 15 on my body so you will have to wait a while before you sell me off to make crocodile handbags!

Hi Nat, I thik it is the sea breeze which helps to tan you on the beach.

im not to sure about chlorine maybe acting as a sunblock, but i do have a few other bits of information.

Also information regarding Thrush from pools useing chlorine

The biggest risk is thought to come from chloroform, which can be created in a chemical reaction between

chlorine, dead skin cells and residues of shampoo and body care products.

Chloroform, a potential cancercausing agent, is part of a group of chemicals called trihalomethanes

(THMs), which are also created when chlorine comes into contact with particles such as skin cells.

Can swimming cause thrush?

Last updated at 17:11 24 November 2004

Swimming pool water often contains a small amount of chlorine or bromine, which are designed to stop

harmful bugs growing in the water.

In susceptible women, they can also lower the levels of 'good' bacteria inside the vagina, which help to

give protection against other infections. This means that though just an occasional dip would be unlikely

to be harmful, doing lots of swimming could make you more suscpetible to thrush.

Sitting in a chlorinated jacuzzi, where the water bubbles up into the vagina, can make matters worse.

Swimming in chlorinated water can also dry the skin, and make it slightly itchy. But that said, swimming

can be a very enjoyable, and healthy part of a holiday, and I don't think you should have to avoid it just

because you are worried about thrush!

One way of helping to protect yourself from possible effects of swimming is to boost the levels of bacteria

in your vagina by applying some natural yogurt (via a tampon) a couple of times a week, and always

having a shower to wash off extra chlorine after you have been in the pool.
