It is difficult living here which is why I plan to move to Turkey. I think many parts of Turkey offer similar aspects of life that are here but with only half the problems. I've bought an apartment there and taken a residency with out any of the problems I experience here. Turkey is a good compromise and alternative to having to go back to the UK.

He also noted that road tax would be reduced as from the 1st of August. Last week, Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu unveiled a package of measures to help review the TRNC economy, including the slashing of road tax between 30 and 50 percent, the scrapping of advance tax and halving of VAT on electrical items from 16 per cent to eight per cent. He added that his ministerial team was working on a detailed economic recovery plan which would be unveiled to the public in the coming weeks. i would wait till august if i was you lol

if they do slash all these taxes, how would they survive taking less tax? its far to top heavy for civil servants and their wages . now they should reduce import duty on cars or motorcycles etc ,people would import more . for a start kav

The Council of Ministers has taken a series of decisions to minimize the effects of global financial crisis in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Announcing the decisions, the Council’s Spokesman-Foreign Minister Huseyin Ozgurgun said the Council of Ministers has agreed to reduce the value added tax on confection, shoes and hand-portable appliances used in house works from 16% to 8%. The decision aims to discourage shopping from the South without imposing a ban and thus support the TRNC economy while fighting against the global financial crisis. Some amendments have also been made to stoppages regarding the imports. At today’s long session, the Ministers also made a broad evaluation of President Mehmet Ali Talat’s briefing on the Cyprus negotiations process which was held in a closed session at the Republic’s Assembly yesterday.

NatAless, I'm afraid TRNC is not for you. But why did you come here in the first place?! Lot's of people like TRNC for most of the reasons you dislike it or are disappointed about it. So, from a Merle Haggard song: "If you don't like it, leave it." Life in TRNC is interesting enough for many and they can do without moaning and whinging poms ( http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Whinging+Pom).

| Why not?! Me & my Turkish fiance were in his home town in Turkey but there are hardly any jobs & no-one speaks English, I love it there but he wanted to try here as he has connections at Acapulco hotel-in fact when the season started he got a job there, I have lived in Spain, Italy & Turkey, I have travelled a lot in my life and I think you have to give each place 6 months at least, it is now past the 6 months & we are not crazy about the place but as I said there are still many places that I want to visit on the island, at the moment it's summer so am quite happy, love the sun, beach bbqs etc This whole site is full of people moaning about the property problems here (understandably) & I want to settle down & buy a house, I have looked and Istanbul, it is also affordable & I can find a job more easily plus the things mentioned above, as a young couple I think it has more in the way of entertainment for us, however I am NOT a negative person & try to make the best of every day here! | Istanbul definitly has more entertainment but dont think it is cheaper. We were spending much more when we were living there. And I think we are living better here, better house, better quality of life. The only thing is we are bored, as a young couple because we have no friends and Im pregnant and stuck in the house. Istanbul is a dangerous city, dont think you can walk down the road without getting strange men trying to chat you up, or cars pulling over and trying to convince you to go with them. Even place like Taxim are very dangerous, lots of pickpockets roaming around, and anyone can pick a fight and bash you in the middle of the street and no one would lift a finger to help you. I once witnessed the girl in front of me get her face smashed in because she refused to be friends with a guy on the street. Noone intervened, she was left bleeding on the main road. (in taxim out for the night) There are many more things I could tell you....just think about it |

Well I love it here even with the small problems. Maybe just been lucky we bought from a guy who has only built 5 of the 8 villas he planned, he nows says he doesn't need the money so not going to build any more, which is wonderful for us as we have now had a lovely view of the sea for 5 years that we thought would dissapear soon after we moved in. Also our builder keeps us going in fruit and veg all through the summer with fresh produce from his orchard and garden. Yes I think we are very lucky and hope to be here for a long long time.

We have been visiting NC for over 27 years and a few years ago we thought we would give Turkey a try. Presumed it would be similar in price. What a surprise we got. Everything was far more expensive, in fact we ran out of money. So back to the place we love, we never run out of money in NC and in fact usually manage to take some home to start of next years holiday fund.

TRNC is expensive compare to South and will get more expensive. There are number of reasons for that, people who are bored perhaps should get involved bit more. There are lots of things you can do, doesn't matter how wealthy your are and always will get bored of doing nothing. You got to keep yourself occupied not for money reasons but mind and body. There are lot of opportunities across TRNC not just in girne area.

It is ironic because there are so many people in Turkey who are ready to give their right arms to be able to live in North Cyprus! I guess it all depends on what you really enjoy and what you expect from life.

I unforntunately only visit TRNC and do not stay permanently on the Island although my heart is there. I would love to move when I retire. I don't think you appreciate what you have. I love everything about TRNC and yes I have visited in the winter so know how cold the winter nights can be, but please believe me it is so much better than UK. It has problems sure, but what country doesn't. Meantime I will continue working paying over the odds taxes in the UK and hope there is enough left to add to the retirement fund. Would move tomorrow if I could. Instead of moaning start counting your blessings

Just got to look on the bright side. Easier said than done i know, myself and my husband also invested in property a few years back, still waiting for a sale. But we love it here, so relaxing, and also all the family love coming out to stay. We dont regret buying, but maybe think we could have done little more investigating before we did. But at the end of the day, the life we have out here, compared to the life back in the UK, who can complain !

Hi brandy sour, so sorry that you have had bad vibes etc regarding investing in N.C., what ever you do in life there is always problems and where ever you go it has problems. Just think of us back in the uk in the muck and filth, raining, cold, dispirited and longing for the sun. Dont get disheartened with the forum members who put every thing in a black light, at least you are with us , not like many 8ft under!! who would love to have a problem to solve. N.C has many assets, more good than bad, enjoy what you have, whilst we are slogging away in the uk.

We pop over the south now and again, dont no where you all get its expensive in the north, we have a meal at marks and sparks or debenhams cost the same in euros as it does here in lira so we find it 2 1/2 times cheaper in trnc, no insurance and petrol, now there are more supermarkets opening in east side prices coming right down hardly worth the hassel of going south

You know after reading all your posts Im amazed. Nat is so right give it at least 6 months. We have been here 5 years and lost out not only on the house we thought we bought Mr R. also the buisness we took on for friends for 6 months. Thet did a runner so we were stuck with it and lost all our money. We are still here working hard and glad to be. We make a living and thats more than most in the Uk.Also we meet the nicest people who have become friends. In UK you are lucky if you speak to your neighbours. We are still here against all the odds. We will stay unless we get a really good offer on the restaurant then will consider possibly turkey xx

I don't think it is more expensive to live in Cyprus on the whole. If you try to live on imported British goods then it will be, of course. Eat as the locals, lovely tasty veg. fruit, salad and local eggs, chicken & cheese. Makes a healthy change. Bread also is much cheaper than in the South. I also see G.C ladies in shops bargaining for very cheap towels, and other stuff. Wine is pretty cheap too, and bottle of Napoleon brandy for £3!

Hi happyboots, I may also be your neighbour! Having a good old talk with the fiance this evening about how I feel here etc and he said Antalya is also beautiful, great beaches, lots of culture-historical places etc safer and great for jobs, he prefers the idea to Istanbul, although he has still promised me a holiday there! He has worked there before a few years ago (I had forgotten) in the summer and has friends there! The properties look great too having looked at some sites if you are coming tomorrow to Guido's we could chat about it then, if not maybe we can go on a shopping trip together here another time! You are all right there is no doubt about it that the TRNC is a beautiful place! Can't wait to meet you tomorrow Lilli and everyone! Iyi geceler Natx

let me share with you all, I own a house in Catalkoy, my sister bought just outside Paphos. We decided on one each side. My builder built from footings to complete in 9 months over 3 years ago and todate no probs, house fab.Deeds due in about a month (apparently) I have one issue on a cracked poolside flooring NOW which he is coming back to do. My sister bought just outside Paphos 2 years ago off plan for 250K, todate has cost them nearly 400K, no water, electric, the builder is corrupt due to do time, they have had their windows smashed, water tanks stolen and their lawyer in Paphos is as bad as the builder after 000's of £, they have had to move to a London lawyer, to this year find out the builder didnt have permission to build so work that out. I speak knowing its my sister in this position. So what they hear in the South side about the North side, they no longer believe is justified to one area. So invest where you believe you feel happy.

If Lisa and her sister bought 'off-plan' to 'spread the risk' - the risk is always present, North or South. So many people buy on a whim without any experience or knowledge of Cyprus - when one does that, it's simply 'the luck of the draw'. I'm happy for Lisa that she doesn't feel she 'drew the short straw'. In view of recent postings re peoples 'satisfaction rating' of TRNC, I thought this thread worth resurrecting!

Message 55, yes a good place for retirement if... you do your homework first. We have been here 18 months now and have no regrets despite big problems with the house which are still being resolved. I personally don't think that one can actually get a true feel for a new country in one or even 10 visits...you have to be here for a continuous 3 to 6months+ to experience a season (or 2). I think many people just assume that it is much like the UK with sun, which it clearly ain't from many postings. In the EC you are cosseted, ie the risks of life have been removed through over controlling governmental agencies. The joy of the TRNC is the freedom, unfortunately many new arrivals have not experienced risks like they will meet here! It's hard to make a living, many don't succeed, many go back home discovering that they really what want (my definition) is UKplus...well here its UK minus. However if you are pragmatic and adventurous then it can be a fabulous place to live. Tonye

I love it here and would not consider moving, especially to somewhere I'd never lived before, unless I had a job lined up. I have lived in Ankara, Antalya and istanbul and the reason for my moving here was to get back to living a normal life and being able to sleep at night. I was in istanbul when we had our huge earthquake and I tried to stay but couldn't. I would never ever consider moving back to istanbul. I can do more here than I ever could there, it IS A DANGEROUS PLACE to live, especially for an English woman. We tended to stay in our own neighbourhood in the evenings, going out and about just wasn't worth it. It was like living in a prison and I hated living in an apartment with just a balcony-it was like living in a cage. I am an English teacher and work was easy to find, but it was just as easy to get a job here.

The best decision I ever made was to come and live here. One thing I really started to miss after so long in Turkey, especially in istanbul, was my culture. No matter how hard I tried to fit in, learning Turkish, learning the unwritten rules of behaviour, especially about clothes and boyfriends, I was always the 'yabanci' or even better 'a natasha'. One old peasant lady selling corn for the pigeons in Eminönü spat on the ground as I walked past her one day on the way to work. On my last night in istanbul I had a party in a local cafe bar with my friends and I wore a strappy Tshirt and thought 'say what you like, I'm leaving tomorrow'. My mother bought me a lovely summer dress from M&S when I came to Cyprus and I thought 'when am I ever going to wear that?'. I was worried about what people would think. It took a long time for me to readjust to living a normal life. The difference is that the people here are more educated and have seen a bit more of the world.

I love north cyprus and have met some wonderful people from all walks of life. But after reading the thread on the koop Bank dealings it must make you think who can you trust OK people have to make a living but at the expense of decent ordinary people people. Yes it does make you think is it a safe decent place to live then I meet local people whom i have got to know over the years, and think must not tie all folk with the same brush. I am disgusted with the way bANKS KOOP BANK, advocates, builders, are ripping no stealing money from people in some cases life savings, how do they sleep at night hopefully what comes round goes round. Perhaps I have got it all wrong anyone like put me right........ nilmoney

Another thing that I love about here is the fact that you can go to ANY restaurant or bar you wish. The elite 'high-society' life doesn't exist here. And, of course, ..........that I feel safe in my house and don't have to watch the walls all the time in case they start moving!......................

first couple of days reading the forum and this is first post We are considering buying a small holiday apartment in NCyprus after visiting this year for holiday and coming up for retirement in about three years, but after reading various news reports about the problems of purchasing property we have started to consider Turkey or even Egypt There sounds like a lot of unhappy purchasers in N Cyprus, or maybe they are the only ones to post on the forums. Unlike many of the people posting I am quite happy in the UK but want somewhere to escape to - two or three times a year with a bit of luck and somewhere for the family to use when they want to. My real problem is that I dont want to live on a large development and that seems to be what is mainly advertised, I want to spend around £50,000 maybe that is not enough, maybe others can advise Good luck to you all

Hi johnsurveyor, we have had a place in NC for past 5yrs, and use it as an escape from the GB weather and the horrors of what goes on. We come over 3/4 times times a year AND just Love it. We tend to do just what we want to do, dont get to involved with the daily stuff that you get in any country, and we simply cannot wait for our next visit. There are plenty of smaller places and if you look I think there is someone on this forum with a smallish place to buy for your money. I will seek and find it as believe it could be somewhere on another site..... Dont be put of by the negative stuff, perhaps we are one of the lucky ones as had no problems from start to finish as we bought some where with the Kocan and already built......

Hi John - we have done the same. We bought a villa in Sept 2006 as a shell and moved in May 2007 to a lovely, completed villa with water and electricity duly connected.. We use it 5 or 6 times per annum and we love it. There are of course others who have been less fortunate, hence the negative posts you see, and of course those who have been put in an upsertting situation are understanderbly going to be more vocal. £50k is quite a tight budget - I believe there are some very nice apartments in Ozankoy which have been completed in your price range, and they are advertised as pre 74 Turkish Title. Good luck to you and your family.

Hi Perry, glad you love the place as well, we simply cannot wait until our next visit, chilling out and just being so quite, lovely. We tend to go to the local restraunts and smaller hotels for evening food as find the Turkish cyps very welcoming, also they love to learn our ways too.... Nothing is to much trouble for them, plus you dont have to listen to the English music!!!! Kareokie or what ever!!!!!

johnsurveyor, for a bolt hole from the UK, i can think of no better place. If however your thoughts are of settling and working here (to top up the pension), forget it, just may take a leaf out of NN books, only a year ago I was with the long haul gang.etc, but lets face facts, they dont want us here(our money?, most certainly!!, not us).

johnsurveyor PS Just as a point of interest, I don't think you'd have too many problems buying a holidays apartment with your budget of £50,000. Just my opinion, but I believe there are bargains to be had - especially at the present time. J

Plenty of places to buy, why dont you rent somewhere first to get a good look around. Have found that Sunbeams estate agents are very helpful re property. They are on the main Lapta to Girne road....... |
