We should do a survey ...both myself and Nurseawful get bitten and we are the same blood group type. Anymore A rhesus positives that get bitten?

Well I dont get bitten as much as my husband who gets bitten rather badly. I will get perhaps a couple of bites but nothing serious. My blood group is A rhesus Neg.

Would being a diabetic be why he gets bitten more?lol

Hi all..I have just had 2 weeks in TBV and never got bitten once,my wife only had 2 bites and we think that happened when we went out one night.Have been taking garlic tablets for about 6 months, wonder if that might have something to do with it?The other thing is ,there is not much vegitation up here and it is quite breezy, wonder if that could affect their performance??.

Actually Mixie , NormaJean is right , if a person is Rhesus positive or is RHD which is the same thing ,it has the antigen D on the surface of their blood . Rhesus negative people do not have the antigen D.

Hope this helps , Simbas

Sorry Norma Jean and Simbas,

I really didn't know that.

I'll try the Whisky racoonchic but only have my husbands best single malt in the cabinet so it will have to do!

Its now almost 3 weeks since I was bitten and no respite. I think I might be having some allergic reaction to it.

Mixie you need to go and get some antibiotics if you have had the bites for 3 weeks, especially if they are still red and swollen.

Not impossible but Cyprus not known for malaria, so don't worry I just posted it so everybody could see all the myths attached to 'remedies' for missie bites.

I am sure the forum doesn't want a blow by blow account of my mossie bites but I have just spoken to the local chemist. She says that I have to go down and let her see the bite but she thinks I've had a severe reaction because I have a low immune system.

She recommended very common sense things like

-not to scratch no matter If it almost kills you.

-apply tea tree oil to keep it moisturised and for its antiseptic qualities on a cotton wool pad.-

-Anti histamine tablets and the best one

-not to get bitten again(which kind of brings us around in a circle doesn't it)

Thanks Nurseawful

Will try better next time

Don't know what blood type I am, but get bitten anyway, bloody awful especially through the night we had no electric at our place therefore couldn't have a plug-in, we did spray the room, still got bit.

I had taken some Zirtec (Anti histamine) over with me and that really did stop the itching, but you can't take them everyday for a fortnight.

Dear all,

A positives appear to have the day in being bitten but negative rhesus' blood types also appear to be targeted.

I am quite surprised to hear that o rhesus negatives can be bitten too.(like spider).O rhesus negative was probably the "founder" blood group type of Europe. 99.9% of the basque people have this blood group type. I would have expected that they might have over millions of years developed an adaptive resilience to it before they were invaded by the A blood group types. But perhaps not so

Hattikins,

Your blood group type is very rare as well. Always knew you were a wee precious thing!

Glad to hear that you don't get bitten.

Still trying to come to a conclusion if its anything to do with blood group types.

You really need to listen I am A + and DO NOT get bitten lots of friends with same blood group some get bitten some not. There IS NO connection with blood groups. Scientist tried this one years ago and no way is it totally down to ones blood group, or skin type or colour the list is endless.

This mozzie landed on my lip so I bit it and spat it out, it flew away and since then none of them have been back.

I'm a bit worried as I don't know what blood group it was.

Where do I go from here?

Hi there Nurseawful,

You have just confirmed to all forum members what my husband has suspected for years....I don't listen. Not in less it suits me!

Sorry, I picked you up wrong from another thread.

Lemtich,

I don't think you have to worry...its our blood groups we have been discussing not those of the mosquitos!

Can anyone confirm if mosquitos have a blood group type?

OK OK I concede....but at least it was a lot lighter than having an argy bargy about property rights who has them, what's going to happen to us all, doom and gloom and we are all carpetbaggers/illegal settlers! Even those who have bought pre 1974!

Anyway fun when it lasted.

Coachie,

I often use tea Tree oil for treatment of the bites ....BUT you've made me think.

Perhaps mossies don't like the smell of it as it is extremely strong although I like it.

I know that there is an Australian range of tea Tree products for shower gel, shampoo etc etc

I think I will stock up before I come back....at this rate there will be no room for much clothes and shoes for all the treatments and mossie deterents(how do you spell this word) I intend bringing with me.

Do you have a thing about food that you see people as sausages and gravy and you drink things like tea tree oil?

Mixie..Try Autan spray in the evening especially around your ankles and this roll on Xpel for soothing after being bitten. My wife used it on the two occasions she was bitten and she never scratched it once, they also do a repellant but we never used it so cannot pass any comments on its performance. We had one suitcase full of all sorts of stuff, but the Autan and Epel worked for us and in the evening we used our electronic plug in and sprayed the bedrooms with a mozzy spray which seemed to have done the trick...

Thanks Coachie,

storing up all this advice. Something must work!!!!!

Lemtich, I am A rhesus positive. I am fascinated that there are so many people with the o rhesus negative blood group type. As I said before , it was the founder blood group type of Europe (probably) or so the scientists think.

Anyway in conclusion, there appears to be no evidence that mossies can do a quick blood group type analysis on you before they land, bite and suck the blood from you. Horrible beasties aren't they?

Never mind the mossies the sand flies are now about. And for somebody that doesn't get bitten they got me. Better than a diet I have lost 10lb since the early hours of Sunday until this morning. Never felt as rotten in my life. Sweats, fever, diarrhoea, headache, general lethargy. All you can do is to make sure you are well hydrated, paracetamol every 6 hours to keep your temp down, mines was 39.2C at one point, don't be too quick to take imodium better I think to let the diarrhoea run it's course. Plenty of Vitimin C (tabs from the pharmacy to be disolved in water) Dyoralite to replace lost salts etc. And finally manage to keep a sense of humour even when your whole body is shaking and you feel so cold but are actually burning up. Hope none of you ever have this as not nice. So beware sandflies.

Hi Nurseawful , hope you feel better soon , i had an experience similar to yours , not pleasant and some people complain of depression although i did'nt suffer with that . Not trying to frighten people here , but I think that people should also be made aware , that a bite from a sandfly can lead to a potentially fatal disease called Leishmaniasis , which has an incubation period of up to a year and if not diagnosed or treated properly can be fatal .

Keep well , Simbas

Thanks for that Simbas,

Had actually never heard of Leishmaniasis, but after a wee bit of research and according to the WHO (world Health organisation) Cyprus is not one of the 88 countries listed that this affects, but glad you pointed it out always good to learn something new. Also I have never seen sores like the one on the WHO site, in anyone over here with sand fly fever but just because I haven't seen them doesn't mean somebody else hasn't, thats just before the pc brigade start again.

And it would take more than a sand-fly to depress me Simbas!!!!!

dont know about blood groups, but surely it,s about not getting bitten in the first place. just read an article in the news paper, that compaired various bug repellent,s and wrist bands came out topps, when out and about.

(Design Go Bug Guards) Four Cloth Wrist Bands for £6.99, from http://www.design-go.com/en these cloth wrist bands contain very high concentrations of deet-up to 90 per cent- and can give protection for up to 100 hours

quote. also mosquiot nets need to be reimpregnated with permithrin about every six months.

I am always badly bitten...either by mosquitos or by that small invisible things...To prevent Im using anti-mosquitos spray or gel and works fine for me. Im B Rh+ and they just all love to such my blood doesnt matter if i am on cyprus or anywhere else...Thats why im always having with me some anti histamine pills like Zirtec or Claritine. Helps and really best way is not to scratch although its hard not to.

Do you find you get letss of a reaction with taking anti histamine tablets?

Do you take them all the time just in case or just after being bitten?

Rub half a fresh lemon over exposed body (G&T left over should be fine!) and keep a fan on during the night. Mossies do not like wind unlike some on this Forum!

You are fine the way you are Natasha, Yes feeling a bit better today just seem to sleep an awful lot, went to lie down at 11am for 10 mins woke up at half past 1 !!

Try Jungle Formula either in spray or roll on doesn't smell wonderful but works for George.

Will try to get down to see you Sunday at Ibo's

Body or food weight? Try 1001 or there is a shop opposite up a lane on the left hand side which sells most kitchen appliances.

oh good! see you Sunday then!

You are a nurse so you probably know this but after an upset stomach to get your energy up and when you can't bear to eat anything I have always been recommended to only drink coca cola (not the diet version) and it really works! I thought doctors and pharmacists were crazy prescribing coca cola but it really helps!

Yes 'Jungle Formula' spray did work for me too but have run out now, my mum brought a can over when she was on holiday here and left it with me, will try to find it here, any idea about weighing scales here and where they sell them anyone?

thanks
