bbc online reminds us just now that turkey has eight of thirtyfive "accession" chapters

frozen due to its continued refusal to open its ports trade from the republic of cyprus,

and will continue to do so unless all the isolations applied to north cyprus are lifted

this despite erdogan's unwavering determination to see turkey join the european union

Fine - shunt Turkey into the sidings. Cyprus is Europe.

ilk message 2:

cyprus is geographically part of asia, turkey on the other hand spans asia and europe

I suspect however you are trying to make some kind of point about civilization:

not terribly appropriate when you recall europe's dire history in the 20th century!

but I can see from your people's point of view this may be a useful game-plan,

sort of the tail wagging the eu dog...

but for europe as a whole sidelining turkey right now would surely be a serious strategic error,

turkey sits at the crossroads and the west needs as many friends in the middle east as possible

andre,

No, I'm stating a fact. Cyprus is in Europe - that's what EU membership means. And the EU will guide the remaining bit in the north into Europe as well. It's happening as we speak.

ilovekibris,

no it is me who is stating the fact:

cyprus (sighs) is part of the european union, although geographically it only borders europe

eu membership itself does however make the southern section part of the west european system:

...again I am trying to work out what it is you are really going on about!

does cyprus have many distinctive european attributes and culture ? yes

does cyprus have many distinctive asiatic attributes and culture? yes

do expatriate buyers in north cyprus care very much about any of the above?

probably no

is north cyprus being pushed towards dissolution into south cyprus even as we speak?

probably in your dreams only

So far Turkey has lost every legal challenge over Cyprus. Let's revisit this subject next year when a few outsiders will be wondering why they were so foolish to put their faith in a corrupt and illegal system out of sheer greed.

Tigs/Kapparis Kid,

Admit it - ten whole minutes pondering and that was the best reply you could manage.

ilovekibris,

you seem to be trying to antagonise people

I am sure those interested would be happy to discuss the highways and byeways of the cyprus question

but, with respect, I do not believe you are by your persistence bringing close any reunification of the island

merely irritating members of the forum although you do appear passionately committed to this end-goal

and I do not in this posting choose to favour one side over the other in this most complicated of disputes

you have more or less on side the european union as I am sure you can explain far better than me:

indeed mr barroso accorded the republic of cyprus and christofias full precedence due to their official status

worryingly though for your fine fellows, he did remark during his recent visit that the division of cyprus

cannot be ended through outside intervention, it is essential for "cypriots themselves" to reach an agreement

quite so
