Hi

I'm absolutely new to this so pls be patient!

When we come to northern cyprus we stay in Korucam - a remote village some kms west of Kyrenia (8kms from Sadrazamköy) - inhabitants greek maronites.

I desparately need to access the internet. So far have been driving to Kyrenia for this.

Forget 3G etc - tried that in April when I came over.

We have a telephone line in one house and in another we have a 1.8m dish for sat tv.

I have emailed all the providers but no replies!

Does anyone have any idea if I can install dial up via tel line or any other with the dish?

Pls pls some advice as coming this summer for 4 weeks and need to work aswell as sunbathe!

Thanks

fouge

ADSL looks like an option. The only problem you have is that most providers do not seem to answer emails. Try SunnyCyprus but call rather than email.

Don't I need something else aswell as tel line for ADSL ie underground cables or near the provider's office etc or does it work the same as DSL - the further you are the lesser the speed etc?

Isn't there a maximum distance you have to be from the provider's office?

Can I do something with the dish?

But yes you're right I should phone them - they'll have the answers - fingers crossed their english is better than my turkish!

Thanks for help

fouge,

I am no expert in this but I think your land line has to be within 5 km. of the telephone exchange and that particular exchange must have the necessarry equipment. I think some of the remote telephone exchanges do not have this facility. Its best to go and ask the people at the telecom office, they should know best.

Hi Fouge

I think Superonline is the answer for you. Next time you come to Girne go to Lemar, you can subscripe there. But it is possible you will have to go to Lefkoşa fırst, sorry I do not remember. When I say Lemar, then it will be best for you to try in Karaoğlanoğlu. They do speak some engish.

IF ASDSL is a no go - because of distance from the exchange - or non economic to fit DSLAMs - the kit to "enable" the wire for ADSL - speak to ICEMAN ( http://www.skycyprus.com ) about satellite internet

He has supplied many companies and folk in remote parts with the ability to communicate at high speeds on the net !

fouge I use 3g in Sadrazamkoy admittedly slow at the moment till turkcell decide to upgrade our mast so I would have thought you would be able to use 3g in korucam.

Yes yes I have been to Tepebasi - I came in April - my mother sent me to buy some 'chickens' from there!

I have many many relations in Korucam! and most people know me! Foulla daughter of Elias Barberis!

(The restaurant - owned by Yiorgos and Nina are 1st cousins).

I used to spend all my school summer holidays there - and I still love the village. I am currently renovating my grandmother's house in the village.

I tried to use 3G via my mobile phone in April but with no luck. I checked with them at 'Lemar' supermarket the areas that are covered and 'Korucam' was a no go.

But for the sake of some Ytl is may be worth trying again if other options are not available.

Thank you I would really appreciate that.

I spoke to Iceman yesterday. The dish we have is no good. We have to buy a 'too way' dish - not over expensive but would still cost approx. €500 plus & plus installation etc - not sure if worth it as I don't live in Cyprus.

He said the only way I can have ADSL would be if the telephone exchange for Korucam was 'digital' - but what about normal dsl?

Yorgozlu - I would apprecate it if you could give the telephone people a call for me - as when I tried to speak to them - no one spoke english.

Thanks for all your help you guys.

Can't wait to come over - the humidity - power cuts -mosquitos -but then again - sun, sea, food & more food & an ice cold 'Efes' (how ladylike!)

Take a look at

http://www.sunnycyprus.net/en/adslcover.html

and see if your exchange is listed as being in the adsl coverage.

Take it from there.

Hi Fouge

glad you made contact with Mustafa ( Iceman)...

"He said the only way I can have ADSL would be if the telephone exchange for Korucam was 'digital' - but what about normal dsl? "

:(

the D in DSL stands for Digital ... :(

Sorry, but the telco, has to put some expensive kit to Digitalise the exchange and this is NOT cheap.. I always say to clients who say the fees for 2-way sateliite are higher.. "YEP.. but it is a small price to pay for having technology in a beautiful, place ;)

Hi

Just to let you guys know - 3G works in Korucam - where I am / have been staying.

The guy renovating my grandmother's house has a telsim / vodaphone usb modem. Found it a little slow but okay. Asked him to buy me one for all future visits here. He bought me the turkcell one - which is brilliant! (obviously not as fast as what I am used to but for use during hols this is perfect - kids can use it aswell - laptop has been taken all over the place here!)

Even posted on facebook that I have internet in my remote village. No one could believe it.

Going back home tomorrow (so sad) but till next time.

Thanks for all your suggestions.

fouge,

we had the same experience in our village. turkcell said we weren't covered then a friend came to our house and used his, we then went and got it and has been working fine for 6 months now.

anyone looking at a conection in a more remote village would be best to get a friend to bring their's and try it, you may be suprised as we were!

looks like turkcell don't know their own coverage areas, lol.
