Page 1 of Cyprus Today (June 27, 2009) tells us about a new border crossing (Yeşilırmak or Yeshilirmak), soon to open. As usual Cyprus Today didn't think it necessary to show us the area where this border crossing is going to be located. OK. It's here:

FYI: I have removed the soft g (ğ) in place names. For obvious reasons

To reply to a question: on my maps you can find (Mah.) below or behind place names. Mahalle is an Arabic word, adopted into Turkish which usually translates into "neighborhood".

So if you go through this border and stick to the coast road, you should be able to get to Latchi & Polis?

RE msg 6, michelle3012 > So if you go through this border and stick to the coast road, you should be able to get to Latchi & Polis? <

=> I'm not sure. The first option now seems the possibility to cross the border and drive to and possibly into Erenköy (a very emotional place for many Turkish Cypriots), crossing the border ("Green Line") there again. Whether the Greek speaking Cypriots will allow Cypriot Turks and EU passport holders to drive wherever they want? To reach Polis via the coastal road, cars will have to get out of Erenköy via another "crossing TRNC (Erenköy) into RoC". Maybe we'll read it later...

Unless things have changed you will not need to drive through Erenkoy. We did the drive from Polis 12 years ago and the road detoured around the enclave taking you up in the hills. We got turned back at the checkpoint and on our way back saw a GC soldier trudging up the hill to get back to camp. We offered him a lift but he said he wasn't allowed to accept!

I have read that GC ambulances will be allowed to drive through the checkpoint to go to the hospital in Nicosia, it will take hours off the time. The checkpoint cannot be opened until the enclave is hooked up to an electricity supply and this will take a few months yet!!

We have been many times up as far as one can go past the village after Vouni Palace,it's so quiet you can hear a pin drop and the views are just amazing especially when the snow is on the mountains.Worth a day out with your picnic's and swimsuits, lots of places to stop and relax.

We have been to Yesilirmak several times too. We went to have lunch at one of the beach restaurants and got talking to a Greek Cypriot who came over every week to see his old Turkish Cypriot neighbours. When we went to pay we were told that he had already settled the bill. We were so touched, just goes to show it takes all sorts.

I would really recommend you visit sooner than later as once that checkpoint opens there will be lots more traffic on the road. There are also lots of little stalls selling strawberries along the roadside but check the price as one stall did try to do me, but soon backed down when I told them in Turkish that I wasn't a tourist.

The road past Yesilermak will need to be upgraded and widened to cope with the extra traffic, but this is great news.

Msg 8

Westender,

How long did the journey Polis to the border take. It would be nice to do a calculation for the total journey using the new crossing point compared with Nicosia/Motorway.

For interested people (maybe some older Cypriot Turks or their sons and daughters?) I've uploaded a map of Erenköy (Kokkina). It shows the situation on August 8, 1964, when a few brave Cypriot Turk fighters were in a desperate position. They were driven back from the surrounding hills by an overwhelming Greek speaking Cypriot force - when they got help from Turk air and naval forces.

The map shows when you click on this URL:

It's a large file, so be patient please!

The new border crossing at Yeşilırmak or Yeshilirmak (to Erenköy/Kokkina) is a good reason to read about the heroic defense of this village:

http://www.google.com/search?q=kokkina%20erenk%C3%B6y&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

Doesn't do any harm to know about the important events in the history of our hosting country, does it?

Sorry I can't remember how long it took us to do the drive from Polis to the checkpoint. I know we were just poodling along and stopping off to take photos and there was quite a lot of abandoned property along the way.

Hopefully a big disagreement will result in the crossing NOT being opened.

The last thing we need is a new crossing. In my opinion, we need to CLOSE a few crossings, rather than open. Opening crossings does NOT AT ALL help to solve political issuesk, especially when they're Greek Cypriots on the other side

RE msg 18 > Hopefully a big disagreement will result in the crossing NOT being opened. <

=> If only for one reason: you are wrong. Every year (August 8) hundreds of old fighters (in 1964 often students) and their relatives go to Erenköy to remember their fallen comrades and what happened there. Very emotional. It's a difficult journey, because of (hidden) obstruction by Greek speaking Cypriots. For other people who want to join it's even more difficult. I was among such a group. They have to board Turkish/T.Cypriot ships, sail a couple of miles away from the TRNC coast, turn to the left and then land in Erenköy. Because the GC's only let trip-registered TC's cross there on August 8. High Turkish military men, EU citizens etc are not allowed to cross. Ridiculous.

That's why I think it's a very good idea to open *this* border crossing. All the others may be closed as far as I'm concerned.

Message 19,

I understand your point, but what i;m trying to say is, the Yesilirmak crossing will lead to many more opening......which is an extremely bad idea. Giving Greek cypriots what they wantin return for nothing but bullsh*t from Chrystofias is NOT wise.

The Guzelyurt/Bostanci crossing is not very far from Yesilirmak, so in a sense is pretty close to Erenkoy. What would be the point in opening a crossing point so close to one already established?

RE msg 20, canyavuz: Survivors from the 1964 fighting near and in Erenköy (Kokkina) and relatives of them now live in Yenierenköy. It's a rather long travel by bus or car. Why shouldn't it made *as easy as possible* for them to visit the graves and mourn the dead - whenever they want and not only by GC grace on August 8?

I agree with you that the GC leader Christo-fiasco must not get what he is not prepared to give.

I understand what you mean about making travel easier for them, but the Bostanci crossing point is close enough to Erenkoy anyway.

Is it really worth opening another crossing point when their is already an estabslihed one close by?

It's only going tobe saving 25 mins or so travel time.

Christo-fiasco..............well thought of Dutchcrusader.

I agree. All boarders should be closed and the TRNC should be annexed to Ankara.
