TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat has reacted against the Greek Cypriot side’s decision to present the Greek President of the European Court of Justice Vasilis Skuris with a ‘golden’ medal of honour for his services to the Greek Cypriot people.

“This is unacceptable” Talat said.

Speaking to reporters during a visit he paid to the Yesilirmak region, the President said the event is an important development.

He noted that the Turkish Cypriot side has earlier told the ECJ officials that such an action would not be appropriate in terms of making a just evaluation on the case of Orams, and called for amendment.

The President noted that the British High Court of Appeal has remained silent over the issue.

President Talat complained that some things were concealed from the Turkish Cypriot Side because the Turkish Cypriot side could not appeal against the development right on time and lawyers representing the Orams couple had to take some initiatives for appeal.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Huseyin Ozgurgun said that the medal of honour was presented to the ECJ President by the former Leader of the Greek Cypriot Administration Tasos Papadopulos in 2006.

Mr Ozgurgun issued a written statement in reaction to the news in which he reminded that Mr Skouris visited the Greek Cypriot Side two months before making a decision on the Orams Case.

The Foreign Minister accused the ECJ’s Greek President of violating the principles of the Court by ignoring the European Commission’s report which included some favourable points for the Turkish Cypriot Side.

He noted that the Orams case is not an individual application but is a sign of Greek Cypriot efforts to enhance pressure on the Turkish Cypriot Side.

Stating that the property issue has become more complicated after the ECJ’s decision, Mr Ozgurgun said the Christofias Leadership will seek to use the Orams case and similar cases as an opportunity to show tougher attitude at the negotiations table.
