Hi all

I have just read another post appealing for blood for an accident victim.

I would be willing to make a list of all the blood groups and peoples names and phone number we could call on in this type of emergency.

I am also willing to laise with the hospitals when needed, and to contact members if they are available either by telephone or e-mail.

What do members think?

I think you will find that the majority of people here have retired and have long passed the proscribed age to become blood donors. ( by here I mean foreigners/expats)

If you've given blood most of your life to about 55 depending on the Country but for first time donors no more than 50. However, in extreme emergencies exceptions can be made, natural disasters etc.

In the Uk you can give blood from age 18years to 70 years so take it that the same here.

This blood will only be used in Emergencies so its not as if you will be called upon once a week / month. With the best will in the world I really would love it if we never had to do this.

Lilli if you read this and any other restaurant / pub owners would you be willing to put a notice up in your premises for people who are not connected to the internet to be able to sign up.

No 1 Doyen will ask the hospital if they would be willing to take bloods from anyone who doesn't know their blood group hopefully free of charge.

Hubby and I have our names on the list and now the neighbours have signed up as well.

Thank you all so far that have agreed and please no point in saying you will do this if you don't give your details. Thanks.

Nurse, just whispering from the corner: isn't the BRS doing this already for quite some time? Wouldn't it be a (good) idea to check and find out if some sort of cooperation could be possible? You know, all Brits and all that...

P.S. There should be a professional database (send out bulk email to all or to some specific donors) and a database to send a text message to all or some. Not difficult and not expensive. Just a thought.

I agree with Dutch Crusader, BRS all ready organize blood doner days at Girne Hospital. As far as I know they have a data base with doners names and blood group. Anyone can donate not just Brits. They advertise in Cyprus today when a doner day is coming up.

Unforunately the BRS only do this twice a year as far as I am aware as it takes a lot of organisation msg 20 &28 but will e-mail them and check, also will clarify with the hospitals what age groups are acceptable.

Thank you all again.

Thank You for your comments Dutch & Roisin

Hello Nurseaweful,

As you are a regular on this board, have you seen my posts for BRS sponsored Blood Donor Days???? Each year, for the last 10 years, we have organised blood donor sessions at Girne Hospital. The last three have been posted on this board. Each person that comes to the donor sessions is added to the Blood Donor Database and if there is a requirement for blood - either in an emergency or for routine operations - we are contacted and organise people from our list to go to the Blood Bank in Lefkosa.

It is a nice thought, but it would be better if those interested in donating blood were to come along to the Blood Donor Days at Girne Hospital, the next one is on 19th September 2009. Their details can then be added to the Database for future use.

If anyone would like to contact me directly and be added to our Database, please email me on kwenborn@gmail.com

Regards,

Karen Wenborn

Scubamum,

I commend the BRS on the work they do as in Blood Donor days. I know this takes a lot of organisation but I also know that not everone is willing to stand and wait in a queue for a long time. Also somewhere down the line there is a breakdown in communications or it would not have been posted twice on this forum for donors to come forward.

In the ideal world it would work the same way as in the Uk where there are regular blood donar days in villages and towns that mobile units visit or take over village halls and schools. But we must remember this is North Cyprus and things don't work quite the same.

And I think it should be down to the members on this board whether they would like to come to the BRS blood donors day or whether they sign on here.

I am more than willing to discuss this in person with yourself and hopfully come to a conclusion that would suit all the people who wish to donate either regularly through the BRS or through another database which would be held

(Continued)

For emergencies only. At the end of the day this is about saving lifes and I personally think that the choice of how and who to give blood to should be a personal choice.

I look forward to hearing from you.

To all the A rhesus positives.

You are not boring by far.

A rhesus positives were thought to have a Southern/ Southern eastern european ancestry. You could have originally been turkish for all you know.

Mixie

PS I'm A rhesus positive but it over an hour to get blood from me so they told me not to come back!

It is outrageous that on this thread how few people have made a constructive contribution in a very well worthwhile life saving cause. Humour aside, it just goes to show how petty, tunnel visioned, self serving the expatriate community is when their precious houses, broken fridges, soccer teams, cats and dogs seem to be more relevant than saving human lives. Shame on the lot of you! Keep up the good work nurseawful, I'm sure you're not as bad as your name indicates.

I'm in England - won't visit again 'til September - and feel awful as I've at least an armful of B+ to spare. If I'm there on September 19th would BRS like some?

For one reason or another many people cannot make it to the blood donor sessions and one thing that I do notice when I am waiting to donate is that many people do not want to queue up for such a long period of time, I appreciate that the nurses and doctors go as fast as they can.

I believe that nurseawful has come up with a very good suggestion in having a list of donors for emergencies only, however I would have thought it best for the BRS to have this list and control it alongside the current list of donors. Surely by having one point of reference it would save confusion and time in an emergency which is exactly what this list is about.

It would be great to see nurseawful and the BRS getting together and pooling ideas as there are so many willing people just on this board

The BRS do ring up in emergencies as I have received 2 calls in the past year for my husband to go to donate and he is over 70yrs, so it appears that age doesn't matter it is the quality of blood that is importa

Hi

It is a great idea for Nurse Awful & BRS to work together. I stated my blood group B+ on my BRS application details but probably because I have not actually donated here (cannot stand queues pathetic isn't it) they did not contact me yesterday.

Am now on blood pressure medication so am not sure if this effects ability to donate?

Hope the guy is recovering OK.

I should be to but am trying relaxation techniques as I do not like the effects of the pills. In the ukl they would not let me give blood because of high bp 247 /125

My goodness Nige that BP is off the scale! I did not want to go on medication but the Dr persuaded me, you make my top reading of 180 look pretty normal.

Probably if I had stayed in Uk my blood pressure would have been OK it is just so stressful living here!

Oh Nige! 247 over 125 IS worrying! My blood pressure is slightly too high for my age also and that's why I daily take one of these little white tablets (another reason why such people are not allowed to give blood, I believe). Maybe we - and other users - can buy the tablets in bulk and get a nige erm... nice discount?

ozankoys mine is inherited so it would mean medication for the rest of my life and being a slave to mediction and diet so relaxation and chiling is my therapy if i do breathing exrecises I can reduce it in a few minutes to something like normal.

high cant syand needles 1 look on the floor but bracey builders would be willing to give a discount of 10%to any one who would give so pahaps might be an idea to issue a card to donators pahaps this might go further also other companies might do same all the best with this worthy cause kirk

Hi All,

Nige get yourself down to either a Dr or come round to mine until we get that BP checked way toooo high leaving yourself at risk of a stroke. Will e-mail you directions with my phone number only stay a couple of mins away from you.

Gates lovely idea about the cards but the BRS was approached about this probably 2 years ago and it was a no no.

Message 43 please read message 44 hence the reason I am doing this !!

For anyone on BP medication as long as BP stable shouldn't be a problem donating blood.

Thanks for that it was just so disheartning to see the new sticky when this one is for a good cause. I am not sayng that bringing Russian tourists to the island won't benefit the economy. And maybe indirectly the money will go into the health service and save lives. But in an Emergency will it ??

And I apologise Simbas for the wording of that last statement in message 56.

RE msg 56, "the"_nurse > DC my friend do you really want these scores !! Well here goes <

=> Dear nurse: I remember a lady-accident some two, three years ago when many expats started threads about the terrible BRS, because they said "we cannot help at once" etc. Now someone is willing to help people (you) and what is the result (this cynic says)? Your overview. I aplaude you twice, but I'm not impressed by the response.

Nurse, try to convince one of the Admins to change the title of this thread in "Karaoke in the hospital". Or: ""Anna will sing": Blood in the saddle" in Lefkosha hospital". Or: "I hope you survive the next accident - but don't call me".

As a regular, registered (here and the UK) blood donor, I am all too aware of the need for this vital service and well done to Nurse Awful, the BRS, Pru' and 'Scubamum' and all of us who continue to donate, whenever.

But, there is still a need to raise the public 'awareness' of blood donation and to keep this momentum going. To this end, there are plans for the first such awareness function (dinner/dance) to be held in September, probably to the east of Girne. Details to follow as they become available.

Just a word of caution, I sincerly thank you all that have signed up but maybe it would be better if you e-mailed me your telephone number and blood group. As I would feel guilty if anyone used the telephone numbers that have been posted.

Just say on the forum signed up e-mail on its way. And for newer members who cannot access my e-mail address it is oliver7703@gmail.com and I will e-mail you back confirmation that I have received same.

Thanks again

Thanks Brinsley, as I thought. I was confused because on msg. 56 A- was listed as 1 and A Rh neg. as 3. So really they should have been combined to make a total 4. I am glad I am not the only person who has a negative blood. Some say it is obvious from the negative attitude one has

Hi Natalie, don't know what age you are so slightly wary about telling you my experiences, all I will say is that hopefully they are only mine and not relevant to anyone of childbearing age. Nasty experiences with pregnancies but as I said everyone is different so no scary tales, but whether we like it or not we are special and giving a unit of blood a few times a year is relatively painfree and I mean even on holiday in TRNC. Thanks for getting in touch.

I think you will find that being on BP tablets does not automatically mean you cannot donate.

IF you actually want to give blood ask the doctors whether or not you are precluded.

PS; what`s happened to your spelling? mistakes all over the place on this thread.

Great idea.

Dont know if all are aware that here and in Turkey when going for an operation the patient takes the names of about five (5) people willing to give blood.

My wife had a bypass operation in Adana,Turkey and I had to go round the local army camps, police academy and the local Mosque to get doners as my wife is AB Reg Neg.

Had there been a central place I could have contacted it would have taken a lot of worry of our shoulders.

Other than the abov, the care and treatment my wife received from the doctors and staff was first class and she is fit and well now.

On another point. In Turkey all driving licences have the holders blood group on them. Great idea.

Not Mr Wilson but Mr Wilsons wife.

I am going to have some blood tests next week so hopefully they will be able to tell me my blood group. I know I am resus negative but not sure if it's O or A or what. But will certainly help once I've found out.

I don't know if this is any use to you nurse, but in the UK when I gave blood reguarly, they told me my blood was earmarked for neo-natal use...just thought I'd mention it in case.

If your wife is able to give blood after her operation don't. The AB group is the Worlds rarest and within that group Negative is the most rarest. So, only in emergencies to save another soul! I'm AB Pos. Not so rare as your wife but still sort after. Hope your wife has had a full recovery. This may account for the difficulty you had sourcing your wife's blood group.

Blimey Richard you actually said something sensible!

Folk with rare blood groups should only give as a last resort, ideally when another person with a rare group needs the red stuff or plasma/platelets.

Brinsley.

Thanks for that.

My wife has her name down as a doner with the BRS but is refered to as a ' Walking doner ' and will only donate when called for.

As you say,due to her blood type it did cause problems but have to say,the Turkish army came up with what was needed and would only accept a handshake and a thank you in return.

With a central point to contact things would have been much easier and thats why I think that Nurseawful's idea is great should be given all the support possible.

Thank you all who have signed up so far grand total of 25 now, yes things are a bit slow but the hot weather means that a lot of people are not indoors at their computers.

Also as adagirl said (Message 96) A lot of people don't have access to computers, so an artist friend is going to design a poster for us that can be displayed in bars and restaurants so that people can sign up there. Also thanks to Kirk from brasey Builders for giving me a contact who he thinks might to the printing for that and donor cards for little or no money.

Just to keep you up to speed with what I am doing, I have written to the Blood Transfusion Service in Scotland to ask for their input in setting this up they are the experts after all. I have also e-mailed a couple of Doctors that I know here and I am trying to get them involved in this so fingers crossed. Will inform you all of developments as they happen.

Not my favorite 'rag' but contact Cyprus Today and ask them to run an article on this matter. Could you ask Scotland whether they would post you the small blue donor books which carries name, type and date of donation and add on slips of paper etc. The blood bank 'pin'/badge would also be a good idea to give to those that do donate.

We will have to do a few fund raisers before we can even think of things like badges, everthing will fall into place eventually unfortunately Rome wasn't built in a day. But keep the suggestions coming. Actually will ask my artist friend Brian if he will design a badge for North Cyprus donors, hows that! Thanks Richard.

I have given blood many times and am over next week. You can have some of mine

if it is any use - 0 pos. (most common type!) I recently started on some HBP tablets

though, but otherwise healthy, so don't know if I am able to give blood now.

Hi Pru Lundy co-ordinates and keeps a list of all BRS blood donors i suggest you contact her, when a friend of friend was involved in a serious motor bike last week she quickly organised 5 members to go to Lefkosia and give blood this helped save this young girls life ! Chris' idea is not to feel obliged to roll up every three months, wait in a queue, donate on the understanding that a few stale biscuits and stewed tea awaits you afterwards. As I understand, it is a Data Base of individuals who, if in the Country can be contacted at a moments notice to donate in an emergency to try help save a life. Those that do not know their blood group a simple blood test will be required, not a 'bag'. 26 people who have so far given their details is an appalling response! So come on REGISTER YOUR DETAILS!!

Probably needs a meeting with those that are sincere in getting this thing off the ground. Hans for one and whoever you think fit (It's your baby). It needs a rethink of Marketing strategy. I could try bullying the English Language rags to run editorials and free Ads, the Hospitals to run free blood tests to verify group type for those that don't know and with your contacts in Scotland what support, if any, the UK could assist. etc etc.

I 100% agree with you so will e-mail you and Hans during the week and hopefully we can work something out, and get together at a date and venue that is suitable for us all.

So far no feedback from the blood transfusion service in the UK or Dr's I e-mailed here in TRNC. But I always did say it would take time.

If anyone is actually serious about donating they don't have to wait for the BRS sessions.

All they have to do is go to the state hospital in Lefkosa go to the first building on the right and give them a drop of the red stuff.

Any day at any time.

Easy!

Re donating at Girne; sadly no.

Most folk find themselves in Lefkosa occasionally so why not do as the wife and I do and pop in.

This not a blood bank facilitating service but a data base of those who can be contacted in an emergency to donate at a moments notice to help save a life! Big difference from just giving blood periodically, the shelf being only 90 days. Clear as mud?

Heres some rather interesting reading about blood types and how each type may affect you....it's quite detailed, but really fascinating...get a cuppa before reading... enjoy...

Richard get over yourself!

Speaking as the recipient of many a late night phone call followed by an early morning trip to Lefkosa to give blood in my case and platelets plasma and blood in the wife's case I certainly don't need patronising by you.

Nursie and I were talking about this idea over two years ago but the BRS were not interested in anything that breaks their monopoly on photo opportunities.

FYI Nursie knows how to get me hold of the wife and I in an emergency situation.

Clear as mud?

For your information. Early '80s Wellington NZ Monday morning, hangover, picked up and rushed to Hospital into surgery to give blood to a little girl on the verge of death. They took more than a bag but was fit and strong in those days. Something similar when living in Virginia USA in the early mid '90s. So, a great idea but TWO years to get it off the ground?

gisomo there is a blood lab in Girne, if heading back towards Lapta there is a Mercedes garage on the left sits on a corner, if you go up that street it is on the right, or you could go to Girne hospital and ask them if they will do it. Good Luck and thanks.

Aslan could you please e-mail me your telephone number rather than put it on the forum. Thanks.

Newscoop and Brinsley if you want to argue go and start a thread of your own and don't do it on mine, thank you. Or go find a pub and have a pint together.

I'm posting this on the open forum before emailing you privately so it's in the public domain.

Dr. David Bevan has offered his services free of charge, to be the medical adviser for your Data Base Directory. For many years, whilst serving in the British Army as a Doctor, including Portland Down research centre, he was head of department in Haematology so has a wealth of pertinent knowledge. Now retired in TRNC is more than willing to help. His blood group not so rare, but desirable O- !

After a meeting this morning to evaluate and steer the idea in a positive way forward for the blood donors directory, it came to light that only 36 people have forwarded their details. Many thanks to them and a damn disgrace to those who can but haven't. Shame on you!

Unfortunately you are not going to get a huge response on this, due to the person who you have got to run the database. It has been shown that they have already ignored the Data Protection Act, by discussing the details with a third party.

Have been asked by Nurseawful to reply to teatime (msg176) as she is having problems with posts to Forum.

"What in the name of God are you talking about. DC has not disclosed any information to any 3rd party as he has NONE of the info. At this moment in time I hold all the blood donor details, and as for the Data Protection Act is there such a thing in TRNC. Also as you claim to live in Bath how would you know anything like this!!! I think the DC now deserves an apology for these unsubstatiated claims. Don't you? I could not do this without his help, so if you have a problem you need to sort our please e-mail me direct at oliver7730@gmail.com "

Hi everyone.

I have been in touch with NurseAwful and we have now got a way to collect your name/blood group etc information if you wish to be an emergency blood donator.

There is a form on this page

http://www.lincguide.com/review/donors/

If NurseAwful has emailed you back to confirm she has your details, you don't need to add them again.

Your information will never be shared with anyone else.

You could literally save a life, so if you can please add your details.

Msg 177: " I think the DC now deserves an apology for these unsubstatiated claims."

Who mentioned DC, but if the cap fits.

My comments were relating to another member on here who often berates people for not being on the Blood Donors list, how do they know.

I will appologise to you though Nurseawful, as I think you are doing a brilliant job and I wish you every success in it, and I'm sorry for any upset I have caused.

Teatime.

Are you working with the BRS on this project yet?

How does someone know how and when to contact you in an emergency?

I have just received a call from the BRS to donate blood as a gentlemen is in desperate need after a couple of operations. I strongly feel that this list should be run alongside the list that the BRS has so that in an emergency there is only one port of call for blood donors thus saving time which is invaluable in an emergency.

Re. Message 182 etc...

teatime,

I have for some time advocated that DC discontinue his attempts at IRONY on this board, as in my opinion it is almost impossible to to 'pull off' in text format.

However, because he managed it (ONCE!) he continues to attempt the practically unattainable - which occasionally dilutes his message... (or completely distorts it!)...

I would recommend that you consider joining forces with him - you might be surprised at the aims you have in common!

In my opinion, he is a person of the highest integrity (even if he IS a bit 'foreign' ).

Very best regards,

Keith.

It's still my opinion that it is very sad and disappointing that cooperation or merging of good initiatives in the small British expat community seems impossible.

Scoobydoo

I think you are right the emergency list should be with the BRS one.

The idea is to make the list of emergency donors list available on the website in a private section available only to

the authorised personel via password.

I can easily add the BRS blood donors list to the site as well.

We want this list up and working this week, not in 6 months.

I am waiting to hear from NurseAwful who is in charge of this and I will it to her to contact the BRS.

In the meantime please add your name

Well done today to the donors who replied to the call for blood . We only have 3 B positive names and 2 of them responded straight away. The other one unfortunatly gave blood recently so could not do again. But a gentleman who was here on holiday responded and he is going to give blood.

Thanks

Petez,

I am already on the BRS list to be called in an emergency and have been for 6 years as I live here and give blood regularly, hence the reason why I received a call last night.

Msg183: "You are a miserable man. And a cheap liar."

Think you are talking about yourself there. Still, you get away with it while others are moderated.

Never mind, it brings this back to the top, good luck with the campaign and I will register when I move out to NC.

Hi Tuttut,

Thanks for volunteering,

It's nothing major, just a small prick and its all over.

If you don't know your type just put 'don't know' down and they will be in touch to help you fond out.

Ouch, guys. Just too much to read on this subject, BUT, come on, give me the facts and I will do an article and try to pushit around. Certainly Cyprus Observer, and then get Brian to put it in Star, etc, etc. But I have lost the thread a bit due to an overdose of kindly concern and comments.

So, as they used to say in the Hallmark adverts 'Give me the details.'
