News just out back home that the Queen will give her name to new medal.

It made me very sick (I had to switch off the radio before she finished) to hear a mother on the radio state that she was glad that her son hadn't died for in vain as he is to be one of the first honoured! He was killed in Afghanistan.

What price a life...? Does a medal mean that you have not given up your life in vain?

You are missing the point. It is a token of honour, not a reward for giving up a life. If it made you sick to hear the mother of a dead son and soldier trying to make sense of what has happened. You need to get in touch with reality.

hi Cyprusgaz,

With respect you needed to hear what was said.

I would have been angry that my son had died.No medal or platitude would change that.

Cyprusgaz....again with respect I tend to agree with mixie.

To most right minded people there is a whole world of difference between those that fought and lost their lives in the World Wars, and our young service people who are maimed, traumatised and killed fighting in the so called "war on terror" in far flung regions of the world which is really just protecting the interests of multinational global corporations and for the poltical and financial advantage of a select hierarchy.

You obviously haven't the faintest grasp of what it is all about. The shame is that our servicemen are out there for you. You are just not worth it.

PS , Personal insults are against board rules , therefore i am deleting it ------ Simbas

Harlequin....I don't need a lecture from you about ignorance.

I am not denigrating the bravery of our service personnel....I am questioning the validity of the "wars" that they are sent to fight and the motives of those who send them.

Misguided patriotic fervour can actually lead to ignorance.

It's got nothing to do with patriotic fervour. Stop distorting what it is about.

Dear all,

Sorry my post has caused some people to become up tight. It is funny because how both Cronos and I have been portrayed is distorted(Sorry Cronos but I don't know you but we appear to have been lumped together)

I am a person who

1. cant watch the march past the cenotaph without crying

2. Has visited every war memorial that I come upon in this country and every other country I visit

3. made a pilgimage to Omaha beach to see where all the those poor young men were gunned down

4 went to the turkish memorial in Kar??????? I can't pronounce it let alone spell it

5 Cant watch the beginning of Saving Private Ryan

6. Choke up when ANYTHING about WW1 comes on the TV

Does that kind of sum up who I am?

People should not make judgements without knowing the writer. I do respect those who have laid down their lives but sometimes I feel was it really worth it?

Cronos and Mixie: You expressed mainly refreshening and healthy thoughts.

P.S. Don't worry about Harlequin - it's just one of his ID's on this board. Not exactly the person to teach you a lesson, eh?

"This seems to me a right and proper way of showing our enduring debt to those who are killed while actively protecting what is most dear to us all. The solemn dignity which we attach to the names of those who have fallen is deeply engrained in our national character. As a people, we accord this ultimate sacrifice the highest honour and respect."

HRH Queen Elizabeth II

Think her Majesty says it all.
