Three friends of mine have recently bought chlorine granules from Offsetsan and all of them are unhappy with the product...

The chlorine is in a plastic bag inside the (25kg) plastic container, but the plastic bag has desintegrated, meaning when you throw the chlorine into the pool, bits of plastic float to the surface...

Secondly, the chlorie seems to have lost its "zest" and all are reporting green pools, despite bunging loads of chlorine in....

My questions:

Anyone else had similar problems ?

Anyone reccomend a place for decent quality chlorine at a sensible price ??

We have had numerous people telling us they have had dodgy chlorine from Offsetsan. We are surprised at this as they are a very well respected firm selling chlorine and other chemicals at competitive prices. We suggest you take this chlorine back as a group and get a replacement or refund.

I would also strongly recommend that DIY pool maintainers get away from 19th Century chlorine and get into 21st century ionization. Take a look at

It's a bit pot-luck although now we know what to look for a visual inspection of the chlorine before buying might help. If it looks a bit as in msg1, then avoid it. Noyan next door to Flippers F&C shop has quite good chlorine at the mo.

Vaughan - how can you tell the diference between decent chlorine and rubbish stuff ??

i bought mine from Offsetsan over a year ago and no problems (although the inner plastic bag was and still is, in perfect nick)....

Exactly. The state of the packaging might be a give away. If it looks like it has been stood in the hot sun and the plastic liner has degraded, chances are the chlorine might have suffered exposure to UV, which "kills" it.

Sent e mail to Offsetsan - no reply, which makes me suspicious - looks like we'll be getting Coban'd up when we need to replace....

Hi negativenick,

I've also been buying Chlorine from the same company as your friends.

At 1st the quality was OK, then problems with inner plastic bag, in bits,

And the quality of the chlorine was not as good as previously experienced.

Gave me all sorts of problems with my pool :-(

Have voted with my feet.

Trying zerochlor at the moment

Hi cyprusairsoft,

Only on my 2nd month after that dodgy stuff I bought previously (chlorine).

Pool seems OK, bit cloudy, but HAD to use something else,

as that dodgy chlorine was giving me nightmares :-(

And I'm not the only one that got the cr*p chlorine!!!

Not got all the test kit either, copper strips etc,

will call into Zerochlor next time I'm passing..

thanks for that i know its a very good quick fix for a green cloudy pool have used i litre direct into pump and works pretty well.

overall works out dearer then chlorine but that stuff from offset was rubbish

funny thing is though it doesnt half give off a really strong chlorine smell but is crap when in use

seen a post that says the test kits are 16 euros dont know if that is true or not.

The thing is,

if you're getting chlorine cheap, and it's no good, where's the saving?

Hi cyprusairsoft,

50% of the running pools about me have changed to Zerochlor, independently.

Two were using Watermaid, and two chlorine, within the last month!

All testing at the moment, mostly doing well

Hotels will probably get a good deal from Pool Co's.

You can always ask

How much will it cost me to switch to Zerochlor and what would be the average monthly running costs to keep an 8x4 pool clean and free from the dreaded algae I seem to suffer frequent bouts of?
