My wife and I hope to move out to TRNC asap. we have visitied many times and are back on 20 July for 3 weeks. I am an electrical engineer in the food industry and my wife is a Psychology lecturer at A level standard with a BSC/MA and PGCE. What do you think of our chances of work and does anyone have any ideas as to prospective employers?

I wish you luck. Hate to say it but you may be better off looking for employment in the South. As in the rest of the world, the recession is not doing anything for job prospects. The government in the TRNC is very protective job wise for locals and does not exactly welcome foreigners looking for work or wanting to run a business. Worth asking around when you visit.

Message 10 - but he/she has a point, surely?

It is notoriously difficult for people to get work here, either skilled or unskilled, unless you are a Turkish Cypriot. Whilst I agree that the TRNC would benefit from skilled workers from the UK, unfortunately, it just doesn't work like that.

Out of interest, how long have you been associated with TRNC, as you seem to have a lot of 'knowledge' of the place?

For your wife try Sunny Lane School in Alsanjack, or GAU (Girne American University) or in fact any of the Uni's as for electrical engineering you never know they may have an opening for you as well. Good Luck I am sure you will find your own way.

And the people here including the ex-pats are really nice just some of them crave a bit of attention from time to time so they play up a bit.

So right you lot stop throwing your toys out of your prams and behave !!!

It pains me to say it but msge 14 above could sum up the sort of attitude, help and reception you may get if you look for work in NC. You could be cynical (I'm sure you are not, yet anyway) but the phrase about the locals being 'so friendly, can't do enough for you, friend for life, love you if you speak a little turkish' etc. etc. may wear a little thin if you are not a tourist or expat willing to be fleeced.

Hector,I came back to live here after spending 23 years in uk to find that ,what the brits didnt want any foreign person to do in uk(working illegaly, being two faced, back stabbing)they are doing it themselves. My apologies to cyprusairsoft,I was not targetting you or anyone like you.Nothing wrong about working, just dont do it by slagging off locals for the sake of getting their job.Or alternativly GET A WORK PERMIT,LIKE I HAD TO IN UK

Hi Greg,

Try to overlook some of the negativity you find on here - people tend to (understandably, in some ways) use it as an opportunity to vent their personal frustrations with some of the idiosyncrasies of life in the North... Yes - there is some work available in some areas but yes, you do need to get a work permit - which any reputable employer should offer this with any job.

I would definitely recommend getting in touch with Sunny Lane as they are looking at options to extend their curriculum to offer A-Levels and I am sure they would be interested in your wife's skills.

Good luck and I hope you are able to get the information you need between the moans and groans. ;)

Hi Greg,

I am sure you would find work in Nicosia south side. Why don't you live near Kyrenia and travel to work everyday, like a lot of people do. It only takes 30 minutes and you would have the best of both worlds. This is not illegal and as I say lots of people do it.

Message 16 Yorgozlu - you are right to be indignant. But remember the British motto - "Do as I say - not as I do" !!!

British jobs for British people etc.

hi yorgozlu,

While I agree with your views in principle, in practice there is a fundamental difference between the situation in the UK and TRNC.

In the UK you can work the black economy and pay no taxes whilst still drawing direct cash benefits = Paying nothing in - taking something out.

In TRNC unless you pay taxes there are no benefits = Paying nothing in - taking nothing out.

There is a bigger picture of course, i.e. who pays for the police, fire brigade etc., but these are perhaps paid for out of the Turkish subsidy that is paid to TRNC, as they are part of the Turkish army, I believe.

It may also be the case that if it were easier for work permits to be issued, many more would apply for them.

Hi TRNCVaughan;

Whilst I agree with your comments,I also feel the need to point out that "getting benefits in UK without putting anything in"is something I never agreed about.

The way it works in Cyprus has got to be a better way of dealing with benefits or pensions.

But whilst who or how police, fire brigade etc. paid by is irrelevant to the subject,

You'll find (as self employed/employer)that getting "work permit"isnt as hard as anyone makes out.

You find the job and employer deals with permit side of it!

Regards

Sophomax.

If you have not bought a property then I would suggest you rent for six months and in that time you and your wife can sound out the various firms/schools about employment.

With your qualifications you and your wife should get employment and the business that employs you will be able to get you a work permit.

Be advised that wages here are only a fraction of that in UK and at the moment wage increases are not keeping up with rise in cost of living.

Having said all that, life here can be great for your selves and children if you have any. Just ignore the whingers

on here who whine about everything, even the whingers.

Good luck.
