My friend who writes books mainly for kids with various problems and who are being helped to re adjust to surviving on their own in the community is writing a basic receipte book, all complete except for the basic art of boiling an egg! Has had so much responce locally, but just wants the best basic way. Any suggestions?

Boil water in Pan. Place eggs in Pan. Answer the telephone and forget about eggs. Smell burning coming from kitchen. Turn gas off. Throw eggs in bin. Do beans on toast instead. )))

Believe it or not Richard, Delia Smith 'boils' her eggs in the microwave! Don't know for how long but I know you have to pierce the top with a pin first.

Add boiling water to pan , put eggs in , bring it to the boil , turn off heat , let egg sit for 2mins , you know its done when you take the egg out and the water evaporates instantly on the egg

Hi Natalie,

I am a cook with over 25 years experience. I have cooked in Royal Households and I can tell you that the perfect soft boiled egg takes 4 minutes if placed in boiling water. However, if the eggs are extra large they will take 5 minutes.

I agree with Simbas

I bring my water (with eggs in) to the boil, then turn off the heat and let them sit for 3 mins,

this was told to avoid getting dark centres on the yolk, it works everytime

i have to admit, there is something quite enigmatic about boiling eggs, even though i have been given tips on how to get the perfect egg, for some reason, i still can't get it right!! Britvic, sorry sweety, it still didn't work for me, came out really hard!! Wouldn't be so bad if i had had a few soldiers to take my mind off it!! hahahahaha

I do the same as spider - sort of!! Eggs into cold water, bring to boil, when water is boiling turn off the heat and leave for 3 mins - perfect!

Push the needle in the end of the measure into the pointy end of the egg. Put the egg/eggs into the tray. Fill the measure with water up to the mark you require for the number of eggs and if hard/medium/soft. Pour the water into the bowl. Place the eggs on top of the bowl. Place the cover over the eggs.

Plug it in, switch it on and wait for it to BUZZ - perfect eggs every time from the electric egg boiler.

Oh my god Nurseawful message 12, how many soldiers do you make eat boiled eggs with you??? a whole platoon? my mind boggles.

To get the perfect boiled egg will depend on how fresh it is, if it is only a day and freshly laid then it can take 4/5 mins if staler it will be only 3 and half to 4 mins, dont ask me why this is, just that I know because I have always kept chuckies.

My perfectly cooked soft boiled eggs took 4 minutes this morning (into boiling water). Vicki are your eggs in the UK or TRNC? I cook eggs for 6 minutes if I want them hard boiled.

6 minutes is in boiling water removed from the heat source. Don't use eggs straight fro the fridge or they'll crack, even with a spoon in.

Heston Blumenthal has established that the perfect soft boiled egg is achievable by analysing the co-efficient of Thermo-Conducivity between the heat source, water container and the quality and temperature of the egg used.

Heat sources vary between solid fuel, natural gas, bottled gas, electric radiant heat, high frequency (microwave), electric halogen or electric induction. All achieve 'boiling' at different temperatures.

These all provide wide variables of Conductivity in relation to the water container used. This container may be glass, aluminium, steel, copper or enamel. Boiling co-efficients may therefore vary by up to 50%.

Altitude is also important. A soft-boiled egg may need 28 mins on a camping stove at the summit of Mt Everest, but only 3 mins at the Dead Sea.

The egg should have a shell thicker than .023mm but no more than 0.42mm and be at a latent temperature to current conditions.

I hope this clears things up!

how to boil the perfect egg, simple get an egg timer the sand type one, put water in sauce pan and bring to the boil, place egg on large spoon and insert into boiling water, turn egg timer over and watch the sand run out if egg is hard boiled, take the timer back to the shop and get it re -calibrated or through the egg away and start again. the colour of the egg also makes a difference, white one,s take a little longer than brown one,s.

my next top top will be on beans and toast. so tune in next week same time same place.

bon appetite
