I have been asked by so many customers why i am not running a pool maintainance company also.

meaning looking after pools.

Well my answer was simple. I didnt come here to look after pools. BUT!

Ask your present pool company if your in a contract to change to zerochlor.

some have answerd that the pool cleaners tell them its to expensive to change over to zerochlor from chlorine!

Well that is debatable!

But i suppose the question (why am not maintainaning pools also) if food for thought.

lets wait until next year and then decide!

i suppose if i want a zerochlor island ill have to go out there wont i!!

We have managed to maintain our own pool by following your excellent advice and I'm sure if we can do it others certainly can! We can't understand why more people don't DIY, once the pool is up and running it really isn't hard work.

Octopus Pools are happy to treat its customers pools with Zerochlor rather than traditional chlorine if that's what they want. However, until we are convinced that there is no extra cost ("debateable" as Zerochlor says)or the client is prepared to pay a modest surcharge, we cannot take that commercial decision independantly.

Vaughan,

Can I be the "Devils Advocate" first without seeming to be picky or mean or just sticking in the nose?

Zerochlor is honest with his "debateable" comment on cost of zerochlor over chlorine based products and I think that most admirable when setting up a new company in competition to loads of other well established companies.

I do not use zerochlor as yet as I still have my poolsan products to use up first - and as both products are very similar it would be silly for me to throw out my poolsan to buy zerochlor at this time. However, having been a chlorine user prior to poolsan I can state quite firmly that pool cleaning is far easier/faster and (for me) a good bit safer than chlorine.

Given that pool cleaning is faster and I have found that cleaning is not required on such a regular basis, would it not be fair to expect a modest reduction (defraying zerochlor costs) in pool maintenance charges if you were a zerochlor user?

Best regards

Mick

Fair comment Vaughan,my thread was just from the feedback im getting from alot of customers, and yes it had given me food for thought for next year,as i am sure i can now maintaine a 8x4 or 10x5 pool for a customer at about the same costs as with chlorine, just i never really came here to maintaine pools, but if i am keep getting asked, maybe i need to rethink the matter, but from next year!

Thanks waddo.bloody hell you must of really stocked up with poolsan

I think I have enough for about 3 years at the rate I use it - had a brain fart one day and thought it best to buy in bulk so that I did not have to worry about saving up!!! Just hope I can drink it all before the best before date expires!!!!

Hi Waddo,

There is a big cost difference between DIY pool maintenance and contracting this work to a pool company. As a pool company we have to make decisions based on known items. As it is not yet known whether Zerochlor is "cheaper" than chlorine we cannot come to a commercial decision. Costs like labour, travel, etc., remain the same. There are pros and cons between Zerochlor and chlorine, not least cost, but unfortunately, at this time, we don't know them all.

If a customer wants us to use Zerochlor in their pool we will be happy to do so, but at this point to offer them a "modest reduction" would be risky bearing in mind that we maintain over 150 pools. If we offered them all a £5 reduction, say, we could loose £750 a month, even if costs were the same. There seems to be little knowledge that costs do work out less if not the same so for us to make the move to Zerochlor whilst at the same time reducing our charges would be a decision based on a feeling rather than experience

Hi Vaughan.

i dont think you would have to offer the customer a modest reduction if they requested could you change to zerochlor for them.

The cost could stay the same per annum and it could still work out profitable.

But that is my findings on looking after my own pool and working out the costs as if i was maintaining a customers pool.

that is my finding over the last 2 months,i shall keep monitoring over the next 2 months when the weather is at it hottest.

Hi David,

Agreed.

It was waddo in msg 5 that suggested a modest reduction might be offered.

Given that Zerochlor is a superior product to chlorine and that it is not sold on the basis of cost rather than it's benefits and advantages over chlorine, it might not be unreasonable for a maintenance customer who wishes his pool to be treated with Zerochlor to pay a modest supplement.

I would be very interested in knowing how costs work out as I am happy to use Zerochlor on our pools if it can be demonstrated that there is not a cost penalty in using it.

Vaughan,

Thanks for that. I had missed the "running costs" bit of the company and had only thought of the DIY side. You are quite right in all you statements and I think that maintenance costs from a pool company should remain the same for the maintenance provided that the "chemical" used is of a similar price. Thanks again - still having fun with my pool and still making the odd mistake but learning, learning.

Zero,

Yes, pulling the leg on the Use by Date mate. I do have a goodly stock mind you even though I spread it around with gay abandon these days!
