This usually happens when it has been dropped and you get a dent in the tin, this has happened to me but a long time ago, but it scares the life out of you, and as you say if it was a child quite scary

This has happened to us two or three times here, and once in the UK, we brought several of the four pack special offer Heinz Bean here, when I took off the outer plastic case it was clear that these tins had been re packaged, Tins showing signs of rust, 3 tins where near to exploding, you see the top bulging, and the tin felt very hard (contens under pressure) ie. the beans fermenting inside, last year I opened a tin of tomatoes, and they exploded, you should see the mess, if a tin of beans goes off you,ll be talking redecorating at the least. The tins are kept in shops in extremley warm conditions, and probably in containers for import, and it gets pretty hot inside one of those, Be careful with all special offers on what I call ex pat stuff, ie mayonaise, cream, etc etc, the use by dates are often very near the end, Just one theory, are they Heinz Beans? Why would Heinz have a surplus of probably one of the most well known products?

You do need to be careful of canned goods. Please check the top and bottom of the can and if it looks raised or 'blown' do not buy it. It is the same with jars, ie; if the pressure 'bump is raised then the seal has been broken and is therefore not safe to eat. I have seen tins explode before and it doesn't always happen when the can is past it's sell by date. If, in the case especially with ring pulls, there can be a TINY break in the seal which lets the contents ferment, or there can be a dent in the can which will break the seal.

Also please be aware that any rust on the tin can lead to botulism forming (usually in tinned meats) - might work wonders for the old wrinkles but does absolutely nothing for your health! If you have a tin with rust on it bin it just to be on the safe side

Why would Heinz have a surplus of probably one of the most well known products? Because they are now so expensive here in UK that people cannot afford to buy them and buy cheaper supermarket's own brand!

I have found it best to keep all my tins in the fridge and then no mishaps with them.

Keep out of the sun, check the expirary date, and any dents in the tins. Always hold a ring can away from you face. Lemar have a nasty habit of spliting up the 4 pack Heinz Beans specials and selling individually at the higher price, which says on the pack this is not tot be done. Also notices things like washing up liquid that have 50% extra free are again charged at a higher price. So much for VFM !

Dents in tins do no harm unless the rim is damaged. Poor quality contents decay causing a buildup of gas ie fermentation..it is this this explodes when opened ie bit like shaking up a bottle of lemonade. Tins that are "solid" or bulging are a sure sign that the contents are to be avoided at all costs. Very hot conditions may cause the contents to slow cook inside the tin

In my seagoing days, I had a bottle of Heinz ketchup let go like a champagne bottle. As I had just sat down to brekkie with all the others, shiny from the shower and wearing clean tropical whites, the effect looked like the Texas chainsaw massacre, as we all took a spraying, including the captain!!
