A Dorset teenager is terrified of walking the streets alone after suffering a racially motivated bottle attack.

Ashley Suleyman, 17, says he is emotionally and physically scarred from the unprovoked late-night assault in a secluded alley. He was walking along a path in Beaminster when two men slammed a bottle repeatedly across his head leaving him with deep cuts and bruises. The self-employed gardener was forced to take four days off work to recover from the assault, but the emotional effects are far more long lasting. Ashley, of The Beeches in Beaminster, said: “I have been out since but not around that area. I’m wary of what is going on around me. I don’t like walking around on my own any more and I make sure I have my mates with me. I’m feeling angry and scared, but what can I do? I didn’t go to work for four days. I was sick every day, I had a headache and sometimes I just couldn’t get out of bed.”

Ashley was in an alley between the Yarn Barton car park and Fleet Street looking for his friends last Wednesday when he was attacked by the two men, believed to be aged between 19 and 23 years.

He said: “One asked me if I wanted a drink, I said no, and he said ‘you’re having one anyway’ and hit me on the head with a bottle. The bottle smashed, he hit me again and was going to hit me for a third time but I ran off. I knew they didn’t know me and were doing it to cause trouble. I thought I would be knocked out.”

Ashley, a former Beaminster School pupil, has lived in the town all his life, but dad Mehmet is originally from North Cyprus. The teenager believes his foreign appearance could have been a motive for the vicious attack.

Ashley said: “They did walk past someone else who I know and they just left him alone, but then targeted me so I think it could have been something to do with race.

“I have had lots of hassle before, but never in Beaminster. When I was in Exeter I was stabbed

Ashley admits he has ‘fallen apart’ after his past ordeals and now suffers with bipolar disorder but controls it with medication. He believes his medication and the support of dad Mehmet and girlfriend Maria Gosney, 15, has helped him to deal with this latest attack.

Both attackers are described as ‘white’

Dusterbruce unfortunately it started before this year 2009 ,the mindless violence in the UK. Go to any A&E dept on a Friday or Saturday night and you will get an idea how bad it is. Most of the violence is alcohol or drug related in Scotland anyway rather than rascial. Nurses often are the target of these assaults as well, I have been myself on occasion, good job I learned to move quickly a long time ago, and was able to shut them up with a word or a look that said I took no prisoners. Must admit though most times I was terrified, and they wonder why people don't want to join the nursing profession any more!

Yes I know these mindless attacks started long before 2009, but as the years progress the attacks seem to become worse. There seems to be no respect for life anymore. I wish there was an answer, but we seem intent on falling deeper and deeper into the chasm of lawlessness and violence.



I rarely venture out these days, and never at night, but you cannot guarantee safety in your own home now.



However, when I am in TRNC I have no worries at all.

Dusterbruce I agree whole heartedley with you if that is a word. Mindless violence is everywhere but not to a great extend in TRNC. But guess what it will be ex-pats that bring it here when it arrives.

And before anybody jumps on the bandwagon ex-pats does not mean just brits.

what should we expect in this day and age, when the wrights of the perpitrator,s are deemed more

sacrosanct, than the wrights of the victim. if the scum are ever caught what can they expect, as a sentance. perhaps an asbo and a 60 pound fine,while the victim lives with scar,s for ever. only when magistrates, and

judges, give out sentances, to fit the crimes will we regain our lost faith in the judiciary.

Cruggs..Remember a mate of mine goung on holiday years ago to the Isle of Man an getting into a fight in a pub.He was arrested and fined £60 and six strokes of the cane.He thought they were joking about the cane until it was administered.He never got into any more trouble for the rest of his holiday.What a shame they have now banned it,and the young crime has gone up...

I have just got back tonight from the UK and couldnt wait to do so. The kids on corners everywhere were scarry. The courts now have new guidelines which seems to help the ciminal not the person hurt they are all PC mad. Why are people doing this what is the motivation. I stopped to talk to a gang of teenagers outside my sons house and was quickly usherd inside. I asked why he did that reply the could have a knife. Its fearful for them all xxxxxxxxxx

God help our growing kids in London. That is one of the reason why most people get away from London because of crime drugs. There is no control anymore. You dare to walk on the street alone at night you fear that you can get attack either get robbed or raped god forbid. It is so shame. As if thats not enough add on the virus of flu as if the country hasn't got enough to handle. Can't wait to move back

I have to disagree on the general oppinion that TRNC doesn't have any crime....A few years back whilst walking home with a takeout curry, a car pulled up beside me and 2 boys jumped out and dragged me into the car whilst a third person drove off!! I went completely mental punching kicking biting, to such a degree that they threw me out of the car!! Some time ago the same sort of thing happened to a couple of teenaged girls also got kidnapped, sadly ther weren't as fortunate as me...they were raped!! Wether these incidents are related or not (i suspect that they are) North Cyprus really isn't as safe as you'd like to believe...i know i wont walk around here late at night alone!

DD,thanks for that. I was told that NC was very safe due to the Turkish Army being there and all.... I would've been very relaxed during my trip in September, but now I know better. Thanks - I'll treat it the way I treat South Africa when I'm out there visiting friends...which is with much fear and self-protection!

Just got back from two weeks in TRNC and it was so refreshing to be able to walk anywhere and feel safe and unthreatened. Even with all the negetive posts on this forum, we can't wait to move to the TRNC permanently and retire to a place where you can walk the streets without fear.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience daisy, thankfully you survived, in UK you probably would have been knifed before you were released.

halfull....all i'm saying is, not everything is as good as it seems...please do not forget that crime is everywhere, just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it doesn't go on! When i lived in south Africa i lived in some rather bad places, and i never once did something bad happen......i come here and get kidnapped!! Just be aware....bad things do happen here!

Well said DD...you would think that the UK was the only country in the world with crime rate according to some of our posters.I never see any crime where I live but I know it exists,but some posters think the TRNC is free of this.It may be small in comparison to the UK but you only have 200000 people living there ,we have 60,000,000 bit of a difference..
