I understand from iceman that we can bring our Sky boxes from the uk and once we have a dish installed will receive Sky programmes, provided we keep our direct debit subscription going in the UK. Has anyone tried this and if so what Sky programmes can be picked up (on the 1.8 dish - don't want the 4+ meter dish in the garden)

Dear Chicken

Provided your contract with SKY is more than 12 months old and not part of a multi-room sub you will be fine..

BUT..

the boxes are not all of the same quality ( tuner sensitivity-wise)

the BEST boxes are the HD boxes - when they have received the new HD menu - as they will receive the HD channels which are STRONGER in Cyprus. You won't get BBC HD - even with a 4.2 m

A good 1.8m will bring you most SKY pat tv content.. but not all of it

Which channels you get depend on the receiver an location

You'll get BBC News 24 - the only BBC / ITV tv stn possible without a 4.2m and you can use the red interactive button to get F1 / Wimbledon, etc..

You'll get BBC Radio 1-4

Best bet a year old HD box as you can then record stuff

re msg 3 Rowlo

YES - all SKY HD sport channels

re msg 4

Multi room SHOULD be left plugged into a tel line - try taking a M/Room box abroad and see what happens - you may well end up paying full price for all boxes !

HD / SKY Plus will NOT be turned on -if not connected to UK phone line

I have an an old 'PACE' sky digibox but no subscription. I was thinking of asking a friend in the UK to add the multi room option to his account. Will that NOT work then??

I'm also getting a used dish for free. Its at least 1.8m, maybe more and I will need an LMB.

Can I get this system to work??

You should contact Iceman

http://www.lyngsat.com/packages/skyuk.html

look at :

S1/2A South/2B South

2D is the stuff you'd see on a 4.2m

HD channels

http://www.lyngsat.com/hd/28east.html

S1/2A South/2B South

you'll get 12 HD channels (incl C4 on a GOOD, well installed 1.8m )

Remember you should have an HD box with the NEW software, and EPG..

Rowlo, I didn't mean my response to sound "rude"..>> you should contact Iceman<<

I just don't know.. I would never quote without visiting the site and knowing the box to be used.. some models of SKY boxes perform VERY badly in Cyprus

Are you 100% certain you cannot get your Sky HD or Sky + box connected without a valid phone line?

Perhaps my question should be: once it has been turned on and works successfully, will it not work once it has been disconnected from the UK landline?

The reason I ask, is because a friend of mine has Sky HD and it's working fine in the TRNC. I haven't been told this, I've actually selected the HD channel myself and watched the programme.

Regards

Dear PC

If you are a new SKY client ordering a HD - you MUST connect it to a phone line to get fired up - Sky WILL exempt you if you can show you can't have a phone line - but as they were doing them for free for a year - in June - you will have to go some - they know if you have a line as they work with BT !

The SKY box has a modem and if it doesn't call back....

Existing clients with a HD 12 months or older - you should be fine ..

Of course SKY HD boxes will work in CY.. ! You just have to get one that is FREE from a SKY contract - that means it must be connected to a phone line - Multi-room boxes MUST remain connected or you may get a rude letter from SKY, threatening to charge you full price of all boxes !

Check your SKY Ts and Cs !!

Dear PaulC

re 13

YES.. an HD box will work in CY, but if you buy one now at GBP 49 and try to take it to CY the UK add will get a letter saying it is not plugged into a phone line... 3 letters and you get chopped - bit still have to pay the subs AND the FULL cost of a retail HD.. not the subsidises price...

Now some folk have chanced it and get away with it..

As the new SKY cards are now being sent out to the UK reg'd address you will find SKY may then start asking the boxes to dial back to check... even if you have been lucky - if you should have the phone line plugged in - don't expect that luck to continue.. Mr Murdock Jnr is no mug....

If you have a subsidised box, you are more than likely to be chased by SKY.

If you check SKYs Ts and Cs ... they can charge the credit / debit card you paid for subsidised box the FULL amount if you break their terms....

That includes not keeping it plugged in to a UK phone line :(
