Hello everybody, can anybody give me advice please?

Is it best to tax a car you are bringing over from the UK for 6 or 12 months. Our tax is due to expire at the end of July and we are driving over in August

Thanks

If you renew your car tax in the uk for 12 months, you can drive it in the TRNC until the uk road tax runs out, without having to tax it here, or 'import' it until then.

However, I think that you do need to advise customs as to your intentions, and get the paperwork set in motion as soon as you arrive, - there can be repercussions if you don't.

You really need to speak to someone who has done it recently, and then confirm what you're told with customs (and make sure that you note the person's name, title, the date & time!) - 'Rules' tend to change very quickly here...

Has anyone any up-to-date info?

Keith.

I think the '12 months grace period' is a myth if you are living in NC either with a residency permit or having imported furniture. If they find either then you have to pay the import duty.

I think it depends on the colour of the car

All guesses and opinions aside -

Has anyone actually done this recently, and have actual practical knowledge of what happens?

yes i have if you have bought a container in your name, you loose the right of bringing a car in for 12 months, but if the container was in your wifes name and the car in yours no prob or vice versa. rates have also changed its 28% now of glasses guide price, and a fee per cc of the car.

It used to be up to the end of the UK tax disc, but I believe that has now changed to 3 months from arrival.

It has probably changed again.

Have you not got a neighbour who's uncles' friend, has a cousin..... (you know how this ends, don't you?).

12 months as long as car has 12 tax and mot if needed, and you have not got a gumruk stamp in your passport for goods as in a container.

Would UK car insurance continue to offer cover during the time it was used until all taxes and other duties were paid locally?
