.... so please no funny answers! I have a friend who is in dire straits with a fear of flying but needs to get back to the UK. Does anyone out there know of a reputable hypnotist or hypnotherapist either here in TRNC or in the south? Yes, I know they managed to fly out here but circumstances have changed and that old fear has come back with a vengeance. Many thanks in advance for any help offered

Not a funny answer, just trying to be practical and helpful!

Fear of flying is a terrible thing and I have had many friends in the past suffer greatly from it. None of them who went to a hypnotist found that it was a cure, regardless of the many promises made.

The only option that worked for most was a visit to the doctors prior to flying and then the magic pill about an hour before take off! Flew with one guy to Singapore (memorable 37 hour flight in military aircraft!) and he used that method without any problem - bugger snored most of the way as well, even through 4 seperate landings and take offs!

Take the shortest route available and spend the least possible time in the air - so fly from Larnaca, sad I know, and reduce the stress as much as possible. Cabin and ground staff will always help if they are informed in advance. Good luck.

Seriously ,

You have to watch with certain airlines. A friend of mine was banned from a very large brtitish airline because she refused to stay on board, took fear and asked to be let off just before they were taxying along the runway. They were not impressed and they have refused to allow her back on until she has undergone a fear of flying course in London which she has since done!

My husband hates flying and a double whisky, no matter what time of day we take off does it , and then he sits with his eyes shut for the entire flight and not a word from him (no matter what length the flight)

Sorry I dont know of any hypnotist, but I have a terrible fear of flying, so much so i have sleepless nights and feel sick for the week running up to my departure ! I never get out my seat on a plane. But if he is registered with a GP or if any chemists sell them, he could take valium, calms you down, or sleeping tablets, obviously once on the plane unless some one can cary him on ! lol. I totally understand his fear and hope some one can be of more help.

Waddo - many thanks for your help. I will pass on the information that your friends didn't find hypnotism helpful. Unfortunately pills and booze don't help the fear is so strong (combined with general claustrophobia)

mmmmmmmm - Could be an option thanks

Mixie - She did refuse to stay on the plane the last time she tried to fly from Ercan but luckily the airline were very understanding as it was just before takeoff!

Thanks for all your helpful suggestions and good wishes

'The Fear Of Flying' a good read by Erika Yong. Buy some Zopiclone and take two with a couple of shots of cognac 30 mins before take off.

If flying is completely out.. What about a sea journey to Athens or mainland TR, then by sea to Italy !

Can I recommend your friend checks out this site? After a particuarly frightening medical experience, I started to have panic attacks (NEVER had them before) and this site was recommended, and certainly helped. I would also say, when one starts to panic, to repeat "this won't last, it will stop" or something along those lines, whilst breathing in and out slowly - really does help.

Good luck to your friend

MsGarnet, thank you for that link, my 'attacks' came out of the blue last July, and not while flying, whilst driving!!! The terror was so much I nearly jumped out of the car while doing 70mph! I do get the odd flutter while flying however, I find if I look at the cabin crew and they are calm, it helps.

I saved a number for a hypnotist years ago. Thought it may come in handy one day. Her name is Amy and her number is 0533 831 22 57 (if she is still here)
