Hi All. I originally came over to complete on my apartment on Turquiose Bay and fell in love with the place and bought a villa with beautiful views to sea. The villa has no pool and i am having a dilemna as to whether to put a beautiful infinity one in given the Oram case.....am I throwing good money after bad???

Excuse my ignorance. I like many others I think are confused with the situation.

I have heard that there is another hearing in Sep/Oct so am i better waiting for the outcome of that?

Is the situation such a mess that no matter what the outcome this will drag on for years??

Given the complexities and the fact Turks have lost their land in the South surely compensation is the best answer and is that most likely to be adopted?? Does Larnaca really sit on Turkish land??

Thanks you all very much for your views on this.

Hi Lazza! I've decided to purchase a place,we complete soon and have already sent half of our money over, even with everything thats going on presently. Only my opinion but i just cant see it being sorted out any time soon.If there is a settlement i would hope it will be on a compensation package,if i were you i would have your pool and enjoy it.Lifes too short to worry about things that you have no control over,i cant ever see 1000's upon 1000's of GC'S going north and TC'S going south to live? a generation has passed also in the process!

We have been here almost 5 years living permenantly, would not change a thing, no regrets. And as for the pool wouldn't be without it even though a pain in the neck in the winter.

You die if you worry and you die if you don't ! So enjoy life and don't wait to say at a later date ,if only I had done this or that.

We also decided to bite the bullet - and bought - working on the principle that at the rate things move/are moving we may well be long dead by the time they decide "they" want our land back!! - cant have the house it wasnt there before! We enjoy life here and intend to continue enjoying it as long as we can. If it did come to a court case that would also go on for years and years as we wouldnt be the only ones!! Politcal expediency reigns.

I can't help you to make up your mind, but I can build you a nice pool if you decide to go ahead.

lostgeezers is a scare monger who likes to believe what politicians and the press say or write. Build your pool and if you have property assets in the UK put them in a trust and nobody can touch you, well, unless the Greek army wishes to take on the Turkish one, and we all know who'd win that one!

I'd ask a good few residents about having a swimming pool before deciding. My friends have drained theirs due to the costs of water and electricity without the additional costs of chemicals and maintenance. As has been mentioned my friends found their pool was indeed a money pit. A pool has to be constantly monitored and looked after, bad enough if you are there all year round not great if you only visit.

Pools are only a money pit if you let it be one. Speak to Vaughan he seems to be the man to build you a pool got a good reputation, but have a cover for it to stop evaporation well up to 94% anyway. As some other people have said lifes to short and you might as well put your money in your pool where you can enjoy it. Remember your a long time dead and you can't take your moey with you so spend the kids inheritance..

rdsteve, Thanks for all the usual cliches however, back to the initial question, yes build your pool. Beware of costs and only you know your budget, if you have one, but if money is least of your worries just proceed as you feel fit and comfortable. Do not worry about the Greeks, it'll never happen.

dear lazza 1

if you have bought your property legally and according to trnc rules, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. let the governments sort it out and compensate each other accordingly. enjoy northern cyprus as the orams will be. you have bought a property which is legal to sell and buy in the trnc according to the trnc law. let the greek government speak to the trnc government who they do not recognise for their compensation. enjoy

Dear Lazza1

re msg 1

No-one can answer this question ... you have already "bitten the bullet" - and if you feel confident the place will be completed ..

LostGeezer isn't wrong to point out the Foreign and Commonwealth advice - just too late... IF you bought on non recognised ( internationally) "deeded title".

The GCs are holding out for restitution - handing back of the land seized - and you'll hear folk hear saying - because it is a long time ago - it won't happen. They MIGHT be right ... but the European Court of Human Rights have told us that if the GC owned it - he still does..

When TR has offered compensation, at the ECHR, the GCs have only accepted compo for "loss of use"..

ONLY a settlement can sort this out - things staying as they are - means cheap prices - BECAUSE of the uncertainty..

You have already thrown the dice.. might as well finish the game... ;)

With the Orams case, they have a problem because they have other property in the uk.

If they did not, they would not be in this situation...think on.

The term "Carpetbaggers" relates to Northerners who travel South for gain !

I think LG (or whatever they call you these days) this is so far from the truth as all northerners want is to stay north and couldn,t care less what happens south.

You could also fit in the "Carpetbagger" category LG as you also took advantage of cheap property in the North at someone elses expense so leave the higher moral ground on this one....eh

Not your boring ill informed rhetoric yet again! I do have the solution for all your problems, as your name suggests, a one way journey to Rotorua, NZ and throw yourself into Waimungu Geyser and you will be truly lost!

Now, Now, lets not get personal! We all have our own axe to grind.

Back on topic, I have spent decades doing my 'Due Diligence', taking 'Professional' or 'Government' advice.

I invested all my money into 'Blue Chip' investments with Equitable Life, Scottish Widows, Scottish Amicable, etc.

How much safer could you get!

Well,... they all lost most of my retirement fund with their Pensions, Funds, Endowments etc, etc.

By contrast, investing in NC Property seems a pretty safe bet!!!

p.s. A friend of mine recently lost £30,000 in a property scam in,....

South Cyprus!

So much for SC being in the EU! He has found there is no Company to sue and no way he has any protection against such fraud.

Happy I invested in NC?

Damn right I am!

Something everyone seems to forget is that over 200,000 T.C. 's live in exchange/Esedger property. Does anyone really think that they will all be dispossessed?

no they wont but i dont think there will ever be a settlement allowing all turkish mainland settlers to stay.for the ones who do stay and live in so called exchange land there will be some sort of compensation agreement that will also apply to properties left by turkish cypriots in the south.

would the compensation also be paid by the government for properties occupied by non cypriots?

if there is no settlement which in my opinion seems likely then i can see hundreds if not thousands of orams type cases turning up at the british courts (if the recomendation of the european court is carried out by the uk courts)

Sorry you are so bitter.

Dont know what will happen, and neither do you, so a bit early for you to get so excited over the thought of Orams type cases,Turks being sent home , discrimanatory compensation.

Why not wait till the final print ,then you lot can vote Yes or No as can the TC's and Turks ,without all this wishing for things to happen that more moderate people might not find necessary.
