Is it possible for a person to appreciate the contrast between varying cultures in society when raised in a rural area? Does life in a city help individuals develop a better familiarity with people from different nationalities and ethnic backgrounds?.

i think rurals best no1, look at our citys back home theyre breeding grounds for young thugs ,racists, gangs, etc look at the kids playing on the streets here , not a care in the world and safe as heaven ,theyll learn just as much on these streets ,god bless them .

nothing wrong with growing up in a city, it prepares you for later life and the scum you may well meet. i love the city life but i like rural living. best of both worlds!

Rural life doesn't make you 'street wise' though!

I live in a small rural village, nothing much happens here (hope I haven't spoken too soon) we are only 5 miles from 2 bustling towns and 20 kilometers from Liverpool and Manchester so I suppose we are lucky. We only have one shop a Co-op and you do see see sometimes about 10 teenagers hanging around but they don't cause any trouble, our Grandchildren are allowed to play out but not too far away from home and are quite safe walking to school themselves.

Rural life always reminds me of the film 'Deliverance'! At least in Urban life, foxes hunt and raise young freely without the risk of an agonising death in a snare left by some 'Banjo' player! Rob

Woodspeckie - I think we are fortunate, too. We moved from S.E. London to Suffolk 9 years ago and although I was homesick for the first 2 years, would not (could not) ever move back. We live in a semi-rural location - we are in Bury St Edmunds but open countryside is just up the road and, more importantly, the kids can still play out in the street after school and are safe walking/riding their bikes to school. Long may it continue!! J
