Right, you have all had a dumped dog on your doorstep that you've felt sorry for, you feed it, you water it...sometimes you even love it..but...you are unable to care for it...it happens to us all. Everyone you speak to has a horrifying story to tell...so what do you do................KAR ???? How about setting up a foster system, whereby you feed them, water them, even love them for a short amount of time, say about 2 months and then pass them on to someone else for a while? If the animal hasn't found a home in a year it gets put down....but at least it has had a fighting chance.....

I will take any and all calls and emails from people willing to be fosters for these poor mites... dazzeee2@hotmail.com or 05338331292...sam

what we need to do is sort out a list of people who would be willing to take on a dog (or cat) for a short period until a home is found....a year of rehoming should be the max, after that, the said animal woud be euthanised.....

The expected time of fostering would be 2 months.....if you would be interested in doing this please call the above number...

would the eight homeowners fostering a dog for two months a year put money in a pool to pay for vaccinations, I say eight as it would be best to have a couple of reservists just in case a foster has to go back to Blighty.

I was led to believe that vet will only put the animal to sleep if it was ill..

.what happens then after the year and the animal has not found a permanent home.....

DD, this certainly sounds, in theory, a very good idea. Would agree with Aslan in message 4. I suppose that someone would need to take responsibility for keeping a 'register' of names, addresses, times when they would be available to do their stint of 'fostering'. It would be a bit like Timeshare for Dog Fostering'.

I hope this idea can be got off the ground, as I feel sure a lot of people, having fostered a dog, would be very inclined to keep it!

Good luck and best wishes.

May I ask what happens if you fins a Vet the will not euthanised a healthy cat or dog??

I also know that there are quite a few people in the community that already share responsibility for a number of cats and dogs they take it in turns to feed them and water them daily.

But its a great Idea I wish you luck in finding more people willing to do this.

It might also be good to talk to some dog food manufacturers regarding sponsorship of the fostering group, food, toys e.t.c and before it starts speak to as many vets as possible about the idea and hopefully one will agree to be the groups vet and be willing to help with vaccinations and willing to put the animal down after it's years fostering.

We adopted a dog recently, unbeknown to us she was pregnant, 2 weeks to go. We did not have the heart to abort the puppies although dog-loving friends told us this was the kindest thing to do as we would not be able to re-home them.

We have 5 beautiful one week old puppies, they would like to trial the foster system. Their mum is a Cyprus Terrier, father - unknown. Let us know if anyone can help, I will post some pictures. Obviously we will look after them until they are big enough to be fostered/ re-homed. We now have 13 animals, few too many!

as sad as it sounds if the said animal hasn't found a home in a year...it will be shot...no poisoning no slow death...one bullet to the head...! i don't want to seem cruel, but i thinkn that this is the kindest way to go...

DD - having had one of our cats put down a week ago (poor old cat was 15 and had a tumour in his bladder) I was only too pleased (if that's the word) that it was discovered and the relevant course of action taken. I agree with you, it sounds cruel, but surely it's a 'cruel to be kind' situation?

I know I'd rather know an animal had been killed humanely rather than starve/be poisoned, etc.

I appreciate there is no easy solution to any of this, but, hopefully, this may be 'a step in the right direction'.

Good luck and although we are not there full-time, will follow progress closely.

Don't get me wrong,.. I love dogs, and tolerate cats if they tolorate me!

This idea sounds very altruisitc, but which of you would be prepared to actually collect the X number of failures from the scheme and kill them?

Think about it.

p.s. Sam, A bullet to the head does not always kill an animal. Vets usually give a massive overdose of anaesthetic which means the animal gently goes to sleep.

I wish I could come up with an alternative.

Its a lovely idea and I'm sure lots of people would want to be involved - but - at the end of the year back to the problem that KAR face (or so the lady in charge told me) - that Cyprus vets will not put an animal down.

Also if you start feeding one dog you can end up with a pack!!

What a great idea DD. I used to foster pregant mummy cats and their kitties until they found a good home. It was so rewarding x. My dog really loved everyone of them, licked them to bits.x

I would be only too willing to stump up the cash for the http://www.fosteradog.org or cyprusdogshelter.org domain name or similar to get this off the ground.

Please let me know how I can help in any way - (I am in the UK).

We need to get a web designer (anyone out there willing to help?) PLEASE????XXXXX

Has anyone got any pictures of potential 'candidates' for this scheme?

- Particularly any smallish / terrier-type puppies that might suit kazbo?

If you don't know how to post the pictures on here, just email them to me at keithcaley@yahoo.com, and I'll do the rest.

If you don't have any pictures, or can't email them, give me a ring on 0533 830 1835, and I'll see what I can do - either I'll come round and take some photo's, or 'press-gang' someone else!

hi dd,

what happens after a year of loving fostering and no home is found, the dog then gets a bullet( sorry to be so blunt) so how will those who took time to foster this dog feel then?

robnjo,

i wanted to respond to your post as putting a dog to sleep is not as kind as it sounds.

we had a kangal pup dumped on us at 3 weeks old, we loved her, cared for her , she was part of our family.

she was a little strange to start with, never one for lots of cuddles ect, as she grew up she became more and more distant, she became vicious to our other dogs, it came to the point where the vet looked at her and concluded she had a brain tumor. so at three years old she had to be put to sleep, which was the kindest and safest thing to do.

it was horrendous, i cried for weeks, the jab is not quick, the body is then disposed of at dikmen dump.

if i needed to do this again i would shoot the dog myself it is most definatley kinder.

How is the situation with the "fostering program"? Quite a lot of dogs/cats have to be re-homed (read this board) and until now it looks like "the street" might be the only alternative. Or...?

its a great idea

re the cats the CPL here build a shelter for 4 cats in your garden if you have the room and want it done and you can have 4 cats ina sort of cattery which can be better than in the house at first as you dont know if they are ill as yet they are put in these home style catteries as soon as they are found or handed over and wait in them around a week untill all health checks have been done and results known

As for forstering a pal runs a rottie rescue and what they do it pay for all vet and food bills the dogs stay as long as needed they also have local dog walkers and repite foster carers ie for holidays

they dont put a healthy dog down and also have them spayed or doctored before rehoming the person who takes them pays a donation of £75 which is what we gave for Alice our resued rottie

she has a small unit in an inshops to raise funds selling pet things and runs tombolas ect also local supermarkek boxes of food ect

Also since Milli we have had Oscar Barbie Lucky and the regal MAX all in good homes. DC I was offered money for Max and said No I will keep him. The guy was a TC and maybe he would walk feed him etc I woundnt take the chance I love that guy so much and so sorry to see hbim go. Just glad I brought him back to life. Oh forgot Oscar now thats another storyI am having Milli when Tooots goes back so I carried it through. I having Maz back also and been asked for two others.
