Does that automatically work across the TRNC aswell, or will it have to be enforced by local government.

North Cyprus is not part of Turkey.

The law restricting smoking in the TRNC takes effect from 1st January 2010.

in April we had lunch inside at windows bar in Girne, no ban on smoking there. After lunch went to my usual hairdressers in tin pan alley, had to die my cigarette out before entering. After haircut I called in the auto spares shop at the end of tin pan alley, again told smoking not allowed inside owing to new law. This is Cyprus, live with it, don't try to make sense of it.

Apologies Minertor,

You're quite right. Some of the laws restricting smoking (for instance in the workplace) are already in effect. Those laws covering restaurants and bars and venues engaged in hospitality and leisure come into effect at the beginning of next year.

Hi Gordon

Hope you and the family are well and you are coping with entering the fifth decade ;)...

Do you think that these anti smoking laws will be respected?

I think it will take some time for people to listen to the new rules

I would expect them to be respected as they have been around Europe....there is no reason for a special case here Mark, and after all,the majority don't smoke so why should the majority have to put up with inhaling a minorities smoke !

Hi Mark,

Just happy to have made it to my fifth decade despite all the (mostly self-inflicted) obstacles and detours...

Family's great, though the family manse looks a little too much like Baghdad after an American surge.

Hope to see you all over here at some point.

Gordon

PS - yes, the ban will be respected - if only because the Government is desperately short of cash and will be out in force to "collect"!
