Aussie

Interesting article but the UN is not a 'peace keeping' force. It is an impotent organisation that are just in place to monitor the situation. The UN 'forces' in Cyprus must be chuffed with their assignation because they certainly are not doing anything for their money and the only 'force' that brought peace to Cyprus was the Turkish Army.

Come on Aussie, bring in the ANZAC troops and any 'solution' will be sorted over a few VBs and a couple of Steinies within a session or two!

'UNFICYP was set up in 1964 to prevent further fighting between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities.'

And did they succeed?

'After the hostilities of 1974, The Mission's responsibilities were expanded. UNFICYP remains on the island to supervise ceasefire lines,'

And what would they do if (and has happened) if there were (hostile) major breaches of the ceasefire lines?

'maintain a buffer zone'

Nice job if you can get it but not a lot of maintenance has been carried out as far as I can see.

'and undertake humanitarian activities.'

And what do these 'humanitarian activities' consist of?

Dear AJ,

re msg 6

Thanks for responding..

You are still avoiding the obvious response to your statement .. viz " MM, I was wrong" ..

The UN CLEARLY state they were mandated to keep peace..

Greece and Turkey but armed GCs / TCs and both intervened despite BOTTH of 'em agreeing UN were to be the peace-keepers..

Need I remind you that the UN Security Council had to condemn both GR and TR as UN troops were killed TRYING to keep the peace..

No arms - no fighting.. as the GCs found out in August 74 ..so WHY did TR and GR supply arms in the first place.... and not let the UN peace-keepers do their jobs..?

Just because they say they are a peace keeping force doesn't mean that they actually are doing any peacekeeping.

AJ isn't therefore wrong and you are ignoring reality in favour of bits of paper again!!

Practically I can't see either side renewing hostilities with or without the UN. There have been a number of minor incidents such as the GC soldier who crossed over and took a Turkish flag and the TC blank morter round that landed in the South but by and large both sides haven't made a big deal about such things.

The UN does smooth over minor disputes between the two sides but in my view its not a decisive role any more and they would be better deployed in more active trouble spots rather than being largely wasted in Cyprus.
