Dont you think that comment was rather pathetic and pointless? Do you think the illegal Turk's in London working in the cab office's and kebab house's get asked by the legal ones "Have you got right to remain in the UK?" Of course they don't, she wants to clean, some English for some strange reason trust fellow English more, so everyone is a winner, except the tax man and a few TC that may want to clean! Get a life!

Spider / Burty I did have to ask. When we lived there and operated our business we had to put up $100,000 and pay our taxes and sigorta. Why should others be able to run a business and not pay the necessary taxes? Admittedly I do have a bee in my bonnet about it as many of us complain about the increased levels of taxes in the TRNC which also affects the cost of living for others. So the genuine ones pay for those who want to flout the system. If people can not abide by the rules in the country they reside then perhaps they should consider re-locating. Burty for those who are working illegally in the UK at some point the UK immigration authorities will catch up with them.

Furthermore I remember a few years ago there was an English girl working at a Cypriot owned bar. Sadly this girl was involved in a serious road accident which thankfully she recovered. As she did not have a work permit the bar owner held a fund raiser to pay for her medical expenses. As it was a monday night and his bar was usually empty that night, his bar was full and a lot of money was raised as well as a lot of sales made behind his bar. Now if he only had got her a work permit her hospital expenses would have been covered and the funds raised that night could have went to help her with her loss of earnings whilst she recuperated after being discharged from hospital.

stubs i know the girl and you are right. Permits do hold a lot of clout. However I do not hold with the moans that some people go on about permits if they clean or take people south side to cover thier cost of petrol. Car sharing is done all over the UK. Its very hard here for people to make a living and people will resort to measures they would not have done in UK. I have cleaned villas and in this heat you should demand big money. The days have gone when youu could get locals to do it as they all want big money but brits moaning is not good. I know its hard when we pay all they ask of us and you know its more each day but we all try/ These sites are monitored by the authorities and anybody asking this question will create awareness to them which is sad as how else can they advertise xxxx

I know a guy who has cabbed in London for 23 years and is illegal. He even has a UK driving license that cost him £400 from a friendly guy at the DVLA! Yeah I am aware of the 100000$ business thing but come on, are you seriously saying a lady working a few hours a week needs to declare as a business, get insurance etc etc? How much tax is due on a few hours cleaning each week? She has to pay tax so doubles her rates, then everyone is out of pocket. Its ok for the "oldies" (No offence meant) but maybe 20 years ago you could make an honest living, nowadays it is just not possible. I have a chip shop here in the UK and if I was to do everything by the book I would pay idiots £6 to do a job a trained sheep could potentially do! Today I paid £170 for a radio license so the staff can listen to music. Gas and electric has doubled in the last 2 years. Insurance, rent, council tax, If I did everything by the book I would make £50 a week for working 75 hours? Worth it?

Sarah, firstly I would take your telephone number of here. Secondly the best way to get the kind of work you are looking for is to talk to friends and neighbours it is amazing how word gets round here! And most importantly gets you away from the PC brigade that come on and try to stop somebody earning a couple of pounds.

Burty I do not agree with the $100,000 thing either but that is what the rules state. Personally I think that this rule is driving a lot business activities underground and should be changed but as I and other foreigners dont have a say it is not going to happen. Those are the rules and the laws if you can't obey them then don't do it. Many people moan about things in the TRNC ie power cuts, the condition of the roads etc etc however these things all need investment and money into them which comes from the taxpayer. Why moan about the lack of things happening whilst at the same time flouting the laws? It can not work both ways. If you choose to flout the laws with your chip shop then that is your business. Nurseawful it is not about being PC. We are guests in another country the least we can do is respect their laws.

Lilli msg 8 I understand what you are saying, however there is a big difference between car sharing and taxi driving. People know the rules but flaunt them Lilli. Over the years there have been many unlicenced taxis, pool cleaning companies etc. Why should you who does things properly have to subsidise those who "moonlight"? If people want to work then they should do so legally, you do and so did we. If people want to work somewhere abroad there is loads of alternative EU countries.

Does a cleaner with a company/work permit who pays 625TL per month in expences and therefore, has to charge (say) 130TL per day have a legitimate argument with the illegal worker who is paying nothing and therefore, only charging 100TL per day? What should they do, lose business to the illegal worker until they can't afford to continue? Doesn't matter where you are in the world - NC, UK, or, US, same argument applies. Legitimate Brit workers don't need to worry about this however, because the local TC's with businesses are fed up of moonlighting Brits and are queueing up to report the illegal workers. Northern Cyprus needs people who contribute not semi-retirees working for 'beer-money.' Washerman

Thank you to all replies. All this was on my part was to get a feel for if anyone needed any help with maintaining their home. As a TRNC resident I have been assured that I can work legally upto 16 hours per week (regarded as a casual worker). I don't want to stir up a hornets nest and anyone who knows me knows I am a decent person just trying to do the best I can for myself and my daughter. Again Thankyou for all replies and advice
