...today with one of tc neighbours...he said years ago in his village tc's and gc's lived in harmony no better or no worse than any other village...then in '63 the gc's decided they wanted the village for only them...and therefore chased out the tc's....the tc's all left and hid out in huts in the mountains, until around '74...when the government told them it was safe to return. Upon returning, they were given help in rebuilding and painting the damaged property in their village, and life resumed.

When i asked him if he lost family during these times, he said....'listen to me, nearly every country in the world has had troubles with who owns what land, this and religion are the 2 main factors in the world that cause violence....the thing is...there is always someone saying they were here first...this is a fact of life!! The thing to do now is stop all this nonsense and bury the hatchets and move on...and to answer your question, yes, i lost many family members, CONT....

....and friends, but this is what happens during war times...noone escapes heartbreak, it is felt the world over, but i have laid to rest my own demons, it's just a pity that too many people are unable to do this...the fighting over land or religion doesn't trouble me as much as the fact that we humans can be so cruel and unforgiving, it saddens me to the very core. But i would like to say to everyone, don't be so sure the land you live on, or not live on, is yours...because somewhere down the line in the past, i will bet my life that you didn't own it...you must have gotten it from someone, and i'l bet again that someone did not say...here have my land...have my house...it is yours......no...all land is normally gotten by wars!!!!'

make of this what you will...i found it extraordinary...

how true, but that has always been my thinking..as my Father lost his homeland, and his wife and daughter were unable to flee..so its no always the ones that can get out of the war torn country, but also the loved ones left behind alive too, that are never forgotten..

Please ask your neighbour why many Greeks living in the Karpaz pre '74 refused to budge post '74? I've never received nor read a satisfactory answer to this question. Maybe he could enlighten me. Thanks

I thought this too, and i'm so pleased i seem to have captured what he said...i literally ran home and started typing as fast as possible so as not to forget anything...i had tears in my eyes whilst listening to him and am proud to know i have neighbours with this attitude.

You know...if you really want to, you could trace 'your' land back as far as you can go...and you will inevitably find that it was gained through some kind of war....this island has been savaged by war for centuries...and continues to do so in ever more creative ways!! I guess at the end of the day, the only true owner of the land is God...but i'm guessing he doesn't want a rent or a kocan...a simple thankyou would suffice....

Interesting point Richard

I assumed that no force was necessary with the huge numbers of Turkish troops arriving. I thought they all pushed off rapido. If not what sort of force was used to help them make up their minds.

This queation is not open to answers from any incarnations of Pikey!

Sam,

Your chat with your TC neighbour is interesting .... but this is old news, it's all been said before by both sides and does not advance matters as regards a permanent settlement in Cyprus.

Better to focus on the future, that is the real interesting debate.
