Codbaba's not too good, been twice and wife's fish had bones in both times, didn't care much for Rivada either. Liked Ravine and Jessic at Lapta are ok.

Rivada are great and you get a lovely salad, bread & dips while you're waiting for your fish & chips - be careful though - I'm usually full by the time the main course comes!

Yes, the Tumba's in Esentepe, he has battered fish and chips on his menu, so it's any night.

Only eaten english style battered fish and chunky chips with mushy peas here once.

Moon Over the Water, Bogaz Road, Iskele. Couldn't be faulted.

Think I'm right in saying this is a special that's only on the menu at certain times.

Flippers ok,service slow,owner miserable.

Fish well cooked, crispy batter, chips good as well. For some crazy reason, they had no mushy peas when we went ???? Why,they are only out of a tin from bloody lemar for gods sake !!!

Not worth a visit.

Better to try Happy Valley instead, faster service and mushy peas or proper curry sauce.

4 of us went to flippers yesterday. All had cod and chips, very nice fish white, with no bones. 4 beers, peas and curry sauce and pickled onions and it came to 60 TL

we were served in 15 minutes - excellent food

Went to Flippers when it first opened - rubbish, fish not cooked well enough (still a bit on the runny clear side) and chips were hard as nails.

Went to Flippers last week for second try - excellent for the North! Good fish, well cooked with nice chips and reasonable fast service considering I was there on my on.

Tried Cod Baba once - will have to try again as I was not impressed at all.

Al Shaheen is not bad if you can get over the very brown batter.

Sorry, not found anything to compare with the South yet and I am a Northern Lad who knows his fish and chips!

hi goonerstan, bones in fish don't bother me, it's the wife that can't stand 'em. She claims filleted fish means bones taken out.

ps we spend five months each year on E Yorks coast, Bridlington, and she works in a fish shop so considers herself summat of and expert. Y'know, like they do.

pps are you an Arsenal supporter? worst fish 'n chips I ever had was when I worked in London

i went to codbaba last week. The chips were great, and the fish was pretty good as well. Our waiter was very helpful but it took FOREVER to get our meal. I think we waited over 30 minutes and we were the only people in the restaurant at the time.

If you want a proper fish supper you would have to go to any of the fishing ports in the North east of scotland where the fish (haddock) is landed fresh every day and cooked as you wait. What is left over is sent to England!

By the sounds of most of the posts, the fish and chips everyone is referring to are sit down affairs.

Is there anywhere you can get fish suppers to take away?

North Cyprus that is.

I know all the haunts in Scotland and I agree that Anstruther has very good fish and chips but the best I have ever fish supper I have tasted came from Lerwick in Shetland.

Flippers at Catalkoy is probably the worst fish and chips I have ever had anywhere.

Fish over-cooked, chips under-cooked, service dire.

When we mentioned to the frier about the state of the fish and chips, he just shrugged his shoulders and obviously didn't care at all !!!

Rivada is good, so is the Ravine, wasn't that impressed with cod baba but to be fair that was when the old owners had it.

haven't tried the fish and chips in the Waterfront but did when they had the farmhouse and they were excellent.

racoonchic,

I had the fish and chips from the wee chippy oposite the harbour yesterday, now that was cod. Just to make your mouth water, I also bought some herrings to pot and some of Gary Young's smoked Lythe. Proper fresh fish.

Not being a great fish & chip fan I cannot pass comment on whose the best however, Dad Cafe opposite Astro, Girne had advertised F & C for 10 TL on their A board until today, priced changed to 15 TL. Quite a price hike in a day! That will get the punters queuing!

We took our daughter and grandson to the Rivada last night the chips were obviously re-heated,the fish was very dry and the pie had been microwaved but was still very mushy in the middle. But besides that it was a lovely meal.We did complain but to no avail. Will definitely use the Ravine in future.

"dont make complaints on this forum"

The basic premise behind having a forum such as this is for members to discuss both the good and the bad, to recommend or congratulate or to complain where necessary.

p.s. right click on a word that's underlined in red, it will correct your spelling for you. :D

Is there a recipe for Fish and Chips so as those who can’t get it right, can?

Just a thought.

Hey Stan, while you're asking him about spellcheck, why don't you put in an extra request for grammarcheck too...?

There are many opinions as to who in the TRNC serve the best fish and chips etc. From our past experience, dining at various establishments without naming or shaming, we have to say that THE COD BABA always comes out tops! Probably because your meal is cooked while you wait. There is nothing being kept warm for hours on end waiting for someone to buy, so surely it's better to have food freshly cooked guaranteeing a crisp batter on the fish and freshly cooked local potato chips (never frozen), rather than luke warm chips and greasy batter. Apart from the super size portions of fish that are served, the savaloys and pies are certainly some of the best money can buy. If you are like us these days, on a restricted budget, between 12noon and 5pm its fish and chips for just 9TL!!! BEAT THAT!!!! We have been eating at The Cod Baba for nearly 2 years and can honestly say it is one of the best, if not the best fish and chip shop on the island.

Hi teatime! The Cod Baba is on the main road in Karaoglanoglu, next to the Turk Bank, opposite Autumn Rent A Car. Happy to oblige - Enjoy!!!!!

Karagolango (spelling?)

Next to turkbank, coming from girne you have Lemar on the left and its about 500meters on the right.

The owner is a london turk and worked in fish and chip shops for years so knows what people expect.

Gets my vote and i used to live 20 mile away from Grimsby in Lincolnshire.

Says something when Grimsby used to be one of the biggest fish dock/markets in UK and Lincolshire produse more potatoes than anywhere else in the UK. But the codbaba is as good as my old local chippy in UK!

The way to make the best fish and chips is to fry in LARD!!! But doubt you'll find that here.

Message76 - Quite right goonerstan - some idiot did just that about the Fisherman in Kyrenia some months ago. They don't realise they are messing with peoples livelihood. Send them all back to the UK - they've ruined the place now anyway - as they did the south!!! - and Spain!!!!

Codbaba is my fav. Always been really good chips, crispy batter on the succulent fish and they do curry sauce or gravy, mushy peas. Been in Ravine a few times now and always been very disapointed. Not tried Rivada (spelling?) but from reading the forum I will do.

Sidways. Could not agree with you more. We were taken to The Old Mill by our friends. We`d never been there before because we live Lapta end. I am still dreaming about the fish and chips, absolutely mouth watering and very nice people.

Exnavalperson - Rivada is far superior to Cod Baba where I will never go again. They gave me fish that was orangy brown right through the middle and not tasting very nice and had the cheek to tell me it was because the fish was defrosted too fast!!!!
