After a spate of burglaries the perpetrators have been caught and I have just got my jewellery back!!! The police are keen for anyone who has had jewellery stolen to visit Girne police station and identify anything belonging to them. It is useful if you have photos of you wearing it to prove that it is yours. I had no expectation of seeing my treasured possessions again but the local police seem to have done an excellent job in tracking down the culprits. Well done TRNC.....

The success of TRNC police unfortunately comes at a price: Now it is common place to beat up suspects in order to get confessions. They may catch a culprit but God knows how many innocent people are beaten up and how many confess to guilts they have not committed. I am not happy with the situation. The new head of the Bar Council found it necessarry to make a public sgtatement condemning such action. Unfortunately the courts are often looking the other side and those sent to hospital for examination are not able to get a true report. Its a sad state of affairs and it is getting worse. We the public must speak up against such practices at every opportunity. ismet

The same used to happen in UK police stations. its been happening in guantanamo bay for several years.Torture! it happend in the 70s or 80s with the birmingham 6. they had cigarettes put out on there naked bodies, and guns rammed into there mouths to make them confess, then years later the UK goverment give them millions, its normal for the police, its all in a days work, its a game. No 1 will speak out, most will say they deserve it ,even if they might be innocent, ohh well we didnt know they were innocent,no smoke without fire, ect ect. until you been on the end of a good kicking from the police and you are innocent ,you can never really know just how helpless some 1 can feel!

That is great news stegill. I'm sure you had given up on getting your things back. I also had jewellery stolen last October, but I am sure that is long gone. When did your burglary happen ?

Our burglary happened on Monday 18th May in Karmi. In reply to Elko i had heard that the TRNC police are sometimes quite enthusiastic in their interrogation techniques however on this occasion it was effective and pursuaded the suspect to show them where he had buried the stolen items. I'm sure had it happened in the UK the items which held so much sentimental value would have been lost forever. Ballyboffin there is nothing to lose in checking the items that have been recovered currently held at Girne police station - but useful to have a Turkish speaker with you when you go.

Reading this it seems that in TRNC burglaries are quiet common? Did they breake into your houses? Or is it actually safe like it appears to be common knowledge?

Burglaries are rare it was just one group of people that caused the problem and were caught Because its so rare it was big news on the Forum and in the press If it was in UK would not get a mention as the paper would be full

I agree that the crime rate appears to be low in TRNC but the recent spate of burglaries is worrying. Lets hope that the recent arrests will put a stop to it.

wanderer, Burglaries aren't so rare anymore. The police told my neighbour who had his FORTH attempted burglary in 3 months last week that they are happening at the rate of 6 a night both east and west of the island. Ozankoy in particular has had a spate of them this last year, with every single one of my neighbours affected either by actual burglaries or attempted. I know that the police caught some guys a while ago but believe me, there are still more low-lifes around.
