Been reading the posts about green swimming pools and I wondered.....

- Does anyone actually maintain a pool themselves ?

- How much maintenance does it require?

- What do you need to do?

Being Scots, not afraid of hard work but I have never actually heard anyone speak about doing the maintenance themselves.

Hi Mixie

Quite a few of our friends do their own pools. Usually clean them twice a week in the summer or more if lots of suncream in them. But they have to check the Ph balance every day. Also you would never get me down the pumproom in weather like this it is boiling and too many levers and switches. We just pay somebody and if anything goes wrong he knows how to fix it. He is a Scot as well so its great if he is late or anything I can actually communicate with him very nicely of course. And before the PC brigade come on yes Brian does have a work permit.

and be careful when your throwing your chlorine in the pool,if you get a bit of a wind blowing towards you, youll find you might get a lung full of chlorine dust.

Personally i find it very easy to do my own, twice a week in the summer and once a week in the winter about 45 mins each time, at the moment though am cleaning the pool at night.

would be happy to show you what does what.

No problem. Been doing our pool for last 2 years. Water in better condition now than when using pool company. EASY PEASY.

Easy once you know what levers to turn in the pump house do not leave your chlorine in the pump house like we did and it nearly finished my hubby off when we opened it.

Good Luck. x

My neighbour and I do our shared pool and after going through the learner stage have now got it down to a fine art.

Good idea to draw up an ' idiots guide ' to hang in the pump room given step by step details on turning of valves, cleaning etc. Save a lot of money.

Having got it the way we wanted we have now gone over to using ' Triple X ' tablets ( I am not a sales rep for pool cleaning equipment ) and have found them to be the best thing ever. Two or three tablets in the floater and our pool is sparkling

An idiots guide does sound good.

I guess I will just have to learn bit by bit
