I read his auto biography "The Last Fighting Tommy" - brilliant book.

They shall grow not old as we who are left grow old

Age shall not weary them nor the years condemn

At the going down of the sun, and in the morning

"WE SHALL REMEMBER THEM"

Hi Sheila

Henry Allingham, who was the other ex WW1 and Royal Naval Air Services veteran, died earlier this month, also has a book out called "Kitchener's Last Volunteer". Good read too.

The bravery or the capacity to survive that war never fails to amaze me.

They were a loyal bunch as well and despite everything they had to endure, they never questioned too much.

My husband's grandfather was strapped to a wheel of a cannon and rolled into battle where he took the impact of the cannon blasting for a day!

Why was that you might ask?..... for being so bold to question an officer about where they were aiming ...he protested that it would cut across our own men and may have killed them!

He was bitter about the war. When he returned home, he threw all his medals into the bay of the Fife fishing town where he belonged.

I always reckon that one day someone will find them then he too will be honoured if they found out the story for having the boldness to speak out!

may I also add may they all rest in peace. The ceremony will never be the same. Now we will have all the other brave people from Falklands Ireland etc. To me as a servicemans daughter it was so special to see them. Their legiod will live on and the legacy longer. They lived long and I hope proud because we are so proud of them xxx
