There are 2 operators, Turkcell and Telsim. Turkcell are the biggest and have the best coverage. Telsim coverage can have drop outs beyond Esentepe.

Turkcell Mobile phone tariffs:

Pay as you go - Text message 20kr to other Turkcell, 25kr to Telsim. Text to international mobile 30kr. Calls 20kr a minute to Turkcell, 30 kr to Telsim. To international landline numbers 50kr a minute, 1.5TL to an international Mobile number.

All call/text costs are discounted after 10pm by 20%.

Contract - Around 30% cheaper than above tariffs.

Can't help on Telsim, sorry.

A landline is a great asset, if you can get one! There is a major shortage of infastructure and you need your building to be already wired and be near to an exisiting line. Present cost is 76TL for your application. There is also a waiting list of a few years; unless you have a friend in the Telecommunications Office or you are a business.

There is a 2TL standing charge but all local landline calls are free. It will also give you access to the internet through the ADSL system.

I use my Telsim Phone mostly for messages and pay 12 Kurus to everywhere.

Local and international the same price.

1 minute phonecall locally costs 20 Kurus.

hi nunu

i would defo go for kktc cell (turkcell's name in cyprus) much better coverage and credits on pay as you go are cheap starting from 5ytl and to buy a sim card only cost 20ytl and you get 100 credits for free, telsim are second rate and here in turkey they have gone bankrupt but they have been bought out by vodaphone so in the future it will be a good service and they will be cheaper than turkcell buying credits phoning out and incoming

i would also say if you can getting a landline is paramount to phone locally is next to nothing and to phone the u.k you can buy a device called alobox from kibrissuperonline and this reduces your international calls by over half and there is always skype when you have your internet connected

hope this helps

Hi Pipie

I think the Alobox turns your standard phone into a VOiPE/Skype phone but I could be wrong.

hi pipie

the alobox is not like skype it is device that you buy from cyprus superonline and you connect it to your phone socket and then plug your phone into the box and when you going to make a international or mobile phone call you dial a nuber then the nuber you are going to call then at the end of the month you recieve a bill for calls made so in theroy its a monthly calling card service, im not sure if they have a office in kyrenia but im sure they do have a office in famagusta opposite the big mosque on the big roundabout

the telecomunications office to get connected is located in kyrenia centre opposite the big post office not exactly sure on the address im sure tim has the address

hope this helps

Changing the subject slightly...... I have a landline and want to get access to the internet. Aside from the installation free and yearly fee from the provider is there also a standard fee by the Telecommunications Company for going through their line......

Also can I have SKYPE or does that depend on the package price......and do you get different speeds....... IM CONFUSED help !!

hi joker

like what kantara has said all you pay for is the standard rate charge for you phone line and for the internet line, if you have a skype phone and you call thru the internet other skype phone you will not be charged but if you phone lets say the u.k thru your skype phone and the person you are calling has not got skype you have to add credits to your skype account and you will be charged for that call thru your skype account

hope this helps you mate

Nunu1,

Sim available from Lemar at Karaoglanoglu, Karakum or Lefkosia for 20YTL and includes 100 credits (value 10TL). The best news is you no longer need to supply a copy of your passport or sign any forms to get a sim. You can sign up if you wish by filling in the form that comes with the Sim or by visiting the Turkcell shop.

Hello Jokers,

if you use a normal internet connection ( no ADSL) you don't have to pay any extra to the Telecom.

They will charge the monthy costs and the minutes you used - and this you have to pay every month.

If you use ADSL it will be put on your monthly balance.

But for that you need a permission and this you will get from the internet provider.

Kantara and UK Turk

ok İ think its making sense now. Let me reiterate I cant afford Satelite TV. I would like to get SKYPE and internet. One of my neighbours left Cyprus for good and went back to England and gave me his landline but Ive lost touch with him now and cant get his line into my name with Telecomm - thus Extend wont have any dealings with me.

My options :

So I can go to superonline and get just internet connection (no ADSL) and I don't have to pay any extra to the Telecom and dont need the phone in my name.

or I can get ADSL and it will be put on my monthly baiance (or do I need the phone in my name)

or failing internet access I can enquire of this alobox from kibrissuperonline which will at least reduce by internatinal calls (and will they give if phone not in my name )

For a normal internet connection you only need a phone line which will be paid every month - it can be on any name.

For ADSL I had to show my Kimlik Card and sign that I agree to pay montly YTL 30 - don't know if maybe the provider could have done that for me...

For the Alobox UKTurk is the specialist...

Kind regards

hi joker

let me explain this in more simpler terms

if you want adsl or normal dial up connection you have to have a normal telephone line which is registerd in you name to your address if you have not got a normal telephone line then you wont be able to have adsl or dial up because both of these services run pararell with your telephone line, if you do get adsl you will receive two seperate bills one for your telephone standard charge and one for your adsl monthly charge if you opt for a normal dial up then you will recive one bill from telecom but you will be charged for time used on the internet

the alobox system again you will have to have a phone line in your name and you will recive two bills one from telecom and one from superonline for calls made internationally

if you want to use skype again you will have to have a internet connection aswell as telephone line (remember what i said above) because skype runs thru your internet connection and your computer and you will set up a skype account which you can do online, you buy credits online and you can make calls internationally which takes your credits but if you phone other skype users you wont be charged

now finally if you cant get a phone line installed in your home under your own name the only other alternative is to get extend broadband which runs tottaly independantly to a phone line because this system runs thru signals broadcasted thru a tiny dish which the extend engineer will install and all you pay is a monthly standard charge

i hope you understand all this now!!!! lol

That was a very simply explanation.

I understood everything Ukturk - even I am German!!!

But I have to say that for a normal dial up connection you don't need the phone line on your own name - I am living in a rented apartment and before I got ADSL nobody asked me on which name the landline is registered as long as you are paying the monthly bill.

Is it cheaper to but a sim card over in TRNC or organise it with your provider in UK before you travel - sorry I am a bit thick when it comes to mobile phones.

hi denali

like kantara said its 100% cheaper for outgoing and incoming calls to buy a kibris turkcell chip if you read previous posts you can find out where and how to purchase them, one thing thou make sure your british phone is unlocked to any networks otherwise your phone wont accept the sim
