Passable house wines. Just ordered 15 bottles off Laithwaites, mixed Spanish reds delivered to Mothers for £39.99. I just hope she doesn't guzzle it all before my return! However, a one off very special deal to myself.

Lilli.....the only one we've tried and liked over there is Sultaniye.....which was medium sweet.

However....don't stock your cellar based on our uncultured palates......at home we drink more Black Tower than anything !

Yakut (Red) and Chankaya ? (white) are quite passable but depends on the price you are paying.

Personally haven't found any wines here (Turkish or otherwise) that compare with even lower to mid range Australian wines at the same price level in Australia. That said there are plenty of ok Spanish, ROC etc light table style wines.

For true value drink beer and spirits here

I only drink red

I also try to drink the wine beer of the region where I am which is impossible in the UK for red

I like the Chilean wines well priced in the UK

Turkish wine

Earlier/later in the year when cooler Angora is nice

As it hots up Yakut but it all needs chilling down to 20-22 c when it hots up

A nice local red (well I think so) is Karmen, not widely available though.

Must admit I am really into Chilean wines at the moment, not had a bad one yet and very reasonably priced, that is in the UK though.

Guildo, you do have an expensive taste, must be the Italian in you LOL

In this heat all wines should be chilled, room temperature for reds is around 12C which doesn't take too long to get to that after opening, drink quickly before it becomes mulled wine!

We all like like Cankaya, prefer it to Angora, (which isn't bad) Nephews family drank it

every night and even took some back to Germany last year (and they are from a wine-growing

area) It is very much a matter of personal taste though.

i don't think turkish wines are any worse or any better than wines from other countries, it just depends on what your tastes are.

recently my brother in law visited, he use to run a wine shop and they both are big wine drinkers, he was impressed with turkish wine in general and even took some home with him.

I was told that Turkish wines were C--- on here when i made some enquiries a few months ago,and when I bought some I found them quite pleasant.I think a lot depends on the individuals palate.Must admit though I do like some of the Chilean wines and of all the places to find it would you believe,LIDL.Not expensive either about £3.20a bottle..And before you can reply Mr.Brinsley,I am not a wino as you seem to think....

The only Turkish wine that I really like is the Kavaklidere Selection. It is much better than the others, but yes it does cost more. Guido's always has a really nice choice of wines. Lilli, I must confess, Patina also has a decent wine list.

If I had an unlimited choice here, I would plump for Oyster Bay, Cloudy Bay, Montrachet, Frascati, White Rioja (Faustino does a nice one). My hubby would got for Margaux, Chateauneuf du Pape, Nuits St George.

That's the verdict from the Chesskitty jury!

Cloudy Bay over rated and over priced. Got it's reputation on the back of a fictional novel by a well known writer (both names escape me). Much better NZ wines at half the cost.

All this talk of wine - must go and open that bottle of Chilean I put in the fridge (from Lidl's!)

Just back from Kibris after late flight and little sleep. It was a great fortnight

despite being very hot. Was stopped at border & bag searched by Greek policewoman at Pile

looking for alcohol/cigs!

I think you should all do a blind test of a variety of wines, including Turkish.

Be honest about it, and I think you will be surprised. I suspect many of you

are a wee bit biased on the subject.

A couple of years ago a local vintner was producing a very nice red wine called St Hillarion. Pricey compared to Turkish wine but very good. I've never seen a bottle of Nuits St Georges in North Cyprus but then I haven't been everywhere.

Message 44. I disagree, as with so many things you get what you pay for and I personally am quite happy to spend my hard-earned money on something I consider to be very good. Each to his own, don't you think?

Message 50, sadly I've not seen Nuits here either, but my posting was more of a "If I had the option here in TRNC..."

You can get stuff like Petit Chablis, Medoc and Sancerre in some of the supermarkets here but I fear they are poorly stored and probably not the best quality in the first place. I shelled out for a Petit Chablis once (the bottle was brown glass, so I couldn't really check the colour of the wine). When I opened it, the contents looked like cold tea! Had similar experiences with other supermarket imports here. However, Hur Deniz is doing a pretty range at the moment, well worth a look.

Çankaya and Yakut are good Turkish wines although a little pricy .......... another reasonable and cheaper alternative is Dikmen (red) and not sure the name of the same make in white think it is Kavak???? - but İ believe made at the same vineyard as yakut and çankaya - less expensive and ok to drink - never had a hangover from them either!!!!!!

I agree with Cankaya Red or Rose, & St Hilarion Red if you can get it.

Cankaya, in June, was 11tl? in Lemar. £30/35tl in hotels.

St Hilarion, a bit more expensive, was a quite earthy Red, but very, very drinkable.

Yakut was 11tl inSupreme in June and the Angora was 8tl.Both of them I found to be quite pleasant, but what some like maybe classified as crap to others,it depends on personal taste...Paid alot more for some of the so called better wines and they were no better than some I buy from Lidl for half the price...

Cankaya was 10.50 ytl in Lemar & some others last week. Easily the best and a pleasant

wine. There was a decent red in Istanbul my American friend & I used to drink, but can't

think of name. Altin something

Guido I think you should have a wine-tasting game for fun in your restaurant with a sample

of mixed wines. Might be fun! I would come if I was there! I am sure Italian wines would do

well for you can't find a bad one (unlike French where you have to pay a lot for good ones)

I believe Italy produces more wine than any country in Europe.

Hiya Coachie I tried Lidl champange when I was back a couple of weeks ago and it was really nice also thier Pino Grigo and Gavi d Gavi all good prices. They seem to be taking over now as they have so much on offer. Are they a franchise as I see them advertised on Italian TV all the time and one is supposed to open south side xxxx

Joking aside, Google Laithwaites wine merchants, they have some fantastic offers on at present. Used them many times and always good. Try the 15 bottle Spanish red mixed case.

Brinsley.. Had Laithwaites for about 2 years and found that we were only using about 70% of what they were sending us so we packed them in.. If they had been doing the Spanish selection like you mention I may have stayed with them...

Lilli...Lidl are a german outfit, but there head office for the Uk is in Dublin would you believe...They have stores in a lot of the Greek islands and I have heard they may open in the South shortly..Keep your ears to the ground..

They just opened in our wee town but have had their windows smashed so many times

by louts to get liquor. I see them when I go to in-laws in Germany.

Lilli thanks for that you know I am always singing and music is in my heart and soul

especially after a glass or two of vino! Can't wait to be back in Kibris too. xxx

Coachie

Just open a new A/C and take the Spanish selection, 15 Bts £39.99+ £6.99 P&P and tell them you don't want the three month plan. I hope Mother doesn't guzzle the lot before my return!
