In the South of the Island officials have recommended that we increase our water intake to a minimum of 6 litres a day to prevent dehydration, and if you are ouside in the sun to drink 10 litres a day. You need to drink until you urinate correctly, not just a dribble!! Soft drinks and coffee do not suffice, and alcohol is a no, no. It just helps to make you more dehydrated. The result being you end up in a hospital on a drip for the day, not pleasant.

Do not forget your dogs and cats, they also can become dehydrated, make sure they have constant access to double the amount of water you would normally give them. I have water bowls and buckets around the house for them, and they have the run of the house to find the coolest spot, even the bedroom. They find it cool under the bed.

i read that the preference for water was old science, alcohol aside the important thing is to get sufficient liquid intake to ensure that your body stays in balance. Tea and coffee have a role to play if they are your preferred way of taking in liquid and that by taking them then you will consume enough.

I'm not so sure we should be drinking so much water...as some of you will remember, i drank approx 5 litres of water the other week, and i got so ill it was not funny in the slightest!! I had stomach cramps sweating and nausea, and it felt absolutely awful....drink as much water as you need, but be sensible about it, you absolutely CAN drink too much!!

Met abloke in Egypt last year who told me he drank from 10 in the morning till 2 the following morning.I asked him did he drink any water, his reply was "dont have any room left for it" I did notice his colour and it was not sunburn,he was not out of the bar long enough to get burned.I mentioned to his wife about water and she said she was sick of telling him to drink some but alas to no avail.I wonder if he will be there this year???

DD I remember that you were ill a few weeks ago.

Also, wasn't there an article in the newspaper a couple of months ago about a woman who drank an excess of water and this made her very ill; swelling of the brain or something along those lines. She had taken her doctor's advice to drink plenty of water a bit too literally.

I must admit, I thought 10 litres a day was a bit excessive.

PaulW message 10

Yes you can drink too much water and become ill, common sense prevails here, probably better to sip water all day that to guzzle litres at a time. As long as you drink at least 1 good size glass of water or cordial every hour it should be enough to keep you hydrated. And remember go to the loo!

Siping water does not repeat not restore the water required by your body.

First rule of desert survival a significant amount of water at one go.

If i can explain imagine the body as a full buket of water if you reduce that by say 1 quarter same as the body loses through sweating. Siping water will not replace that fluid same as just adding a little to the bucket.

Over a short period of time the bucket or body will lose more than a quarter.

You should increase your body intake of water by a significant amount at regular intervals depending on output of exersion taken ,differentiate between resting and working.

Sorry Hippo, didn't word that very well if you read my message again I did say at least 1 good sized glass of water every day. Not everyone can drink a large volume at a time so they have to sip so to speak. And the danger of guzzling water by the litre although highly unlikely that it would happen although not impossible is water intoxication or the body can go into shock and the kidneys shut down. Sorry folks if it looked like I meant that you should just have wee sips all day it's a case of the fingers typing quicker than the brain working.

Yes 1 glass per hour would be a good yardstick but you could increase or decrease the period with regard to the amount of exertion incurred.

Also some salt in your fluids as well to replace the lost elements. I drink Ayran twice per day and it really does work. Tastes like c**p though, just like taking your cod liver oil as a kid !!!

Wish I could get my cat to drink more. She is normally a little sun worshipper but is finding it just too much at the moment.

Just remember that if you feel thirsty it's already too late as your body is dehydrated. On the flip side there was a few cases of water overdosing resulting in death in the UK last yearso just be a bit sensible with the quantity and speed of drinking fluids and you should be OK.

You can judge for yourself by the colour of your urine!

If you are not going then you defently need more - once you do go check it out.....

Dark yellow and smelly - not enough water

Nearly clear with a slight colour - normal

Green, flourescent yellow red etc then maybe vitamin pills or beetroot to blame!!!
