Hi guys and gals,

I've just bought a small digital telly for my flat in Caesar's. Does anybody know if it will work when I plug it in? I believe there are three satellite dishes on each block and I was wondering what equipment I might need to get a signal from these or whether the terrestrial service is transmitted digitally.

Regards,

Martin

Nice one FS.

Thanks for your reply Nancy08. Is Berat on site? What kind of telly do you have, ie digital or analogue? I seem to remember reading that there is only analogue transmissions of terrestrial TV in N Cyprus. Digital must come via satellite. I'm out at Caesars in mid August for a fortnight and I can't wait.

Thanks again,

Spud

Spudlove, so back to your topic, I wonder if I am the only one who is using the Caesar system? Originally I asked for a technical spec for the satellites from Val, bless her. She told me what she could but not the exact techie stuff, Tark also sent me some limited info.

So knowing the 3 satellites that the system was tuned to, I went to Maplins to get a receiver. They said they would have preferred more info especially as there was not a separate outlet for each dish, as that is an unusual set-up for them. I told them I know a lot of serious expats also have a card subscription to Turksat, so as an alternative I would like a card slot too. The result was that they sold me a box with a 6000 channel capacity for 49.99.

I bought a TV on the island and it appears they all come with digital tuner as its a Euro spec now, even though digi may not be available there just yet.

So the big moment came to join the 2 and see what the Caesar system had in store for me --

- the good news is that the box counts 3765 satellite digi channels. The bad news is I couldn’t get Grand Prix ! – (its on another forum thread). Plenty of channels look like they have some good programmes then when they come on, up goes the $ sign, dammit ! There are several ‘Kibris’ channels on the satellite though.

The box found several satellites other than the Hotbird/Eutelsat/Turksat that the dishes are tuned to, but no strong signal from them. One is the Astra 22 which I know a lot of people tune to and get most of the free channels via an old sky box. I wonder if we could ask Caesar to re-tune one of each of the 3 dishes to that Astra, maybe the Eutel dish? In fact a couple of weeks ago we had a very strong storm overnight with terrific winds and since then we lost the France 24 news channel and wondered if the dish had been moved. So if it needs re-setting the Astra would be the better one to use. HTH

Thanks for the info Nancy08. Informative stuff from Guinness. In England I have a motorised dish to pick up different satellites and can understand how this works. But three dishes into one cable sounds..er...complicated. Can you tell me Guin, what kind of cable do you use from the back of your telly to your ariel socket? Just a normal co-ax?

Cheers,

Spud

Spud I am pleased you could understand what I wrote, because this satellite stuff is all smoke and mirrors to me even though I have one at home and have a Sky box I take to wherever I work in Eastern Europe. In fact a friend of mine uses a Maplins box like mine and gets a huge range of channels through his Sky dish in UK. On the Astra I may be wrong about the one used locally - might be the 48? - but all the Astras are on my box and I had a look at their website for the footprints, of which one covers Cyprus.

The connection is just the usual satellite fly lead with a screw-up connector each end. Upstairs there is a large box of tricks up by the door leading onto the roof with all the clever stuff inside. It took a while for my box to first suck in all the channels, but all 3765 are now in the memory and it doesn't need re-tuning every time its switched on. HTH

Hi Guinness ! re 11

It's Astra 2 for the UK stuff

Any ordinary sat receiver can be tuned into Astra 2 to get the unscrambled channels - e.g BBC / ITV, etc. You DON'T need a SKY box !

Here's a map to show the footprint of the Astra 2D satellite - and WHY we did huge dishes to catch a signal we shouldn't get !

http://www.astra2d.com/astra2d.htm

What matters is the dish size and where the dish is pointed at..

The screw connectors are called " F-connectors"

The Grand Prix is broadcast on one of the TRT channels on the Turksat satellite I cant remembr if its TRT 1 or 3 but the commentary is only in Turkish. I believe coverage with English commentary can only be received on some of the pay satellite systems. English Radio coverage can be received in some places in the North on the BFS radio stations.

Hi mmmmmm,

I have an oldish Force 536S-cv receiver that I don't use any more. I did have it set up on a motorised system but I now use a Satcatcher. Are these receivers specifically designed for motorised systems or can they be used with a static dish? I'll bring it out with me in August if it will work.

Cheers,

Spud

Msg 15. Thanks Aussie, but it didn't work for me to watch the German GP. I spent a lot of time looking for channels advertising the GP and I got ready for qualifying on TRT. The transmission started about a quarter to the hour at the end of a news bulletin, the man announced something like 'and now over to the German GP qualifying' then the payment demand came on the screen. Same too for the race next day. Had I been in possession of a Digiturk card then I would have been laughing !

I have all the usual Russian channels too and they also charge, but its free on their terrestial channels (my brother-in-law in Minsk watches it at home for free), so I was really annoyed.

We are not bothered about an English commentary, the racing is a mostly self-explanatory !

Hi Jamie,

I believe there is a guy on site, an electrician, that fits receivers and tunes them in. Can't remember the price but I think it's about £100. He tunes it to Hotbird, Eutelsat W3 ( I think) and Turksat I think you can get Cartoon Network free on Turksat but you'll need to toggle your language button on your remote to get it in English. I think there are quite a few English channels like BBC world on Hotbird.

I took my own receiver out with me and it seems to be working ok but I didn't really scan through it to see exactly what's on offer. I'm sure Val will be able to get in touch with the spark for you.

Regards,

Martin

Dear Spudlov

re msg 23

Any sat receiver ( NOT SKY) that is DISEqC compatible - Digital Satellite Equipment Control.. pronounced "Die-Sec" can find all available channels on the three dishes.

IF the wiring is already cabled to each apartment and connected to the dishes then charging £100 is taking the ****. It's a bit more sophisticated than tuning a new TV.. would you pay £100 for THAT ?!!

It can be done in 30 minutes max..

Dear mmmmm,

As I said, I brought my own. I think I may've mislead you into thinking I paid to have it tuned. I did this myself. Also, the price of the receiver was in the hundred quid
