This is not a fishermans tale, 3 people witnessed it plus me (first hand) took our boat out yesterday, 500mts off shore near snake island, 32mts depth of water, my two friends got all there fishing gear, and I,d got a plastic bottle with a bit of line on, so we dropped them in, I went for a swim off the back off the boat, my friend Robbie said theres a big in the water, I looked down, crystal clear and could make out somthing coming toawards me, I was on the side off my boat not near the boarding ladder, Robbie said its a ray, and its a big one, the words Pants and Soiled come to mind, I tried to climb up the side of the boat, and thats pretty impossible, they said that my face was shear panic, dont know how they could see me through there laughter. I managed to get on board with some help, the damn fish swam toawrds me, not like a normal fish that swims away, then they tell me it was around a metre wide. Eventually im calm, so I wound in my line on the plastic bottle, ctd.

Guess what was on the end of it , A Ray fish, and im not a fisherman, My wife was busy calling me a cruel B******d Im trying to get some one to take a photo, (this one was only about 40ctms across) by the time the camera was sorted, it had bitten through the line and made its ecape, OK now the serious side, I have found out this morning that they are quite common here, and extremley dangerous, found in these waters between 5 to 200mts, A local fisherman told me we should have cut the wings off and ate them, supposedly delicious, Think I,ll stick to Chicken Curry

One night the captain of a tanker saw a light dead ahead.

He directed his signalman to flash a signal to the light which went.....

'Change course 10 degrees South.'

The reply was quickly flashed back...

'You change course 10 degrees North.'

The captain was a little annoyed at this reply and sent a further message.....

'I am a captain. Change course 10 degrees South.'

Back came the reply....

'I am an able-seaman. Change course 10 degrees North.'

The captain was outraged at this reply and send a message....

'I am a 240,000 ton tanker. CHANGE course 10 degrees South!'

Back came the reply...

'I am a LIGHTHOUSE. Change course 10 degrees North!!!!'

Yes the local fisherman said also they are good to eat, I am a bit of a whimp when it comes to fish, I like it on the plate with the bones taken out, and ready to eat, And I think what made me panic when I was in the water was the fact It was big and swimming towards me, And of course the fact that they carry a nasty sting in the tail, I believe they can also give you an electric shock from there mouth area, can anyone confirm this.

I have been fortunate to have had the extreme pleasure of diving alongside schools of Rays and to the best of my knowledge they are relative harmless unless provoked when resting on the sea bed. They are beautiful creatures and should be left in the sea where they belong, not on the end of a speargun!
