I wish someone like Joanna Lumley would champion the isolation imposed on the TRNC. The TRNC is punished over and over again. About time for a change. The direct flights fiasco is another example of Britain's tunnel vision Mixie

Why would you want Lumley championing our cause. Hasn't she done enough damage already, opening UK borders to a bunch of Asian mercenaries. And getting them pension rights, only a government like Brown's would have allowed this one.

I believe she championed an injustice. If people are good enough to serve in the military for us why shouldn't they be given rights to live here? They have to serve for 4 years. What goes on in the TRNC is an injustice ,,,and I'm not speaking about the ex pats but the actual Turkish Cypriots or the Turks of Cyprus. M

I signed Lumley's petition as I grew up in a military family with tales of these wonderful soldiers. A week after this I saw the programme on the Gurkhas. At the last Gurkha enlistment in 2007 there were 200 vacancies. There were over 17,000 applicants. These applicants spent 6 months trying to prove they were of the quality required. I was surprised that so many spoke English. They told the interviewer that from an early age they dreamed of joining the Royal Gurkha Regiment. The reasons given were the pay, 17,500gbp as a soldier against an average Nepalese wage of 300gbp pa. They spoke of the better life they could give their families. They spoke of the chance of getting a UK passport. They spoke of bringing their families to UK and of all the benefits therein. NONE of them mentioned any love of Britain or the Queen. To my mind that makes them mercenaries (look it up) and having been paid their entitlement ends. I have nothing but respect for these people but do we owe them anything?

Get back to your beer Brins, read Bravo 2 zero and you'll realise that if Andy Mcnab is the norm, the SAS couldn't win "It's a Knockout"

My first experience outside of RAF Odihum, in a local pub and the pool table given a heightened level of excitement by a group of very well dressed small fellas. All dressed the same, excited and having there own rules and gambit as to the involvement in my game. Hereford was a learning curve and experience. Middle East pipelines and occasional African experiences, aided by french (british) foreign legion; gave me further support. Being just a WISE man in all of my expriences has not enabled me to survive and progress. Being WISE i mean Welsh Irish Scotish and English. Not everyones experience or requirement in there line of duty in every day life, but on occassion and when called for ; some become your father, son and family before you know it. Continue to look after the kids in Afghanistan. The Gurkha way.

CyprusChill I will make it my next thing to do..........To get hold of the Genocide Files and read it. Have only heard piecemeal from those who have read it. Are you saying Anne Robinson has strong feelings about the Cyprus Issue? If so, she would be just the person to speak out Mixie

Dear minertor >>opening UK borders to a bunch of Asian mercenaries. And getting them pension rights, only a government like Brown's would have allowed this one.<< I've read all your posts in this thread and note not a few ommissions/ inaccuracies 1/ The Tories and Lib Dems were pushing the Labour govt into a u-turn over the Gurkhas .. 2/ They only got the same rights as other Commonwealth ex-serviceman already had. Still laughing about your comment re Ismet being "anti-British"... on the "direct flights" ruling..

Hi multiM, opposition will always push against government policy, that's why they're called opposition. Wasn't aware that Nepal was part of the Commonwealth. If they are, welcome one and all. It's just a matter of record that Ismet knocks Britain, he's entitled to his opinions, as I am to oppose them. omissions/inaccuracies depend on the blood/alcohol level

MultiM, wondered about your interest in my postings so checked your member info (first time I've ever done this) and see you have connections to the Emerald Isle. Would that be North or South, or like me, both.
