Newlad yes you have to buy insurance at the border can't rememeber the cost now as it is so long since we went down. Also unless things have changed I am sure the the GC gaurds at the border won't let you cross with a hire car from the North.

we have taken a hire car across a couple of times, you need a document from your hire firm and then get your insurance at the border . I am not sure if it was 25 or 30 euro and thats for 1 or 30 days. They were very helpful and even had a laugh with the GC guards as my brother-in-law had forgotten his driving licence and had to go back for it.

Hope this helps

Hi Newlad,

Unfortunately msg 10 is incorrect, as stated above you can take a hire car over the border and only certain companies allow you to do so but please make sure that you tell the company and they give you all the relevant doc's you need. Plus your driving licences.

You then purchase insurance once you reach the greek side for 25Euro's for 30 days, this is the minimum. At least this was the price 2 weeks ago when I went across. You will probably have to get a road tax doc but they will guide you at the border, it is a while since I got this as it is an annual document that doesn't cost anything, I am assuming that it is still free.
