Nethouse Networks. Not the cheapest, no comparison to Western European standards either, but possibly the best you can get in TRNC.

Hi,

I have a wireless package since October and have had no trouble up to now..................I have a wireless router that you have to sit in the same room but it it difficult contacting them by e.mail as it is all in Turkish.

I have e.mailed the info e.mail address but get no response................I contacted them on the help line and they know the problem but no one has followed up.

Does anyone have an e.mail address for Nethouse that they have got a response from as I don`t want to knock up a fortune on the telephone

Nethouse seems to supply a good ineternet service for the island... but have you ever tried to call their call centre in Lefkosa. We had a problem with the equipment that needed to be resolved. I have 2 number for Lefkosa and after a good 50 -100 attempts we only ever had somwone answer the phone ONCE. It is either constantly engaged or it goes to an automated service that eventually rings out. In the end I have to phone the lady in the Kyrenia sales office and have a rant at her!!!!

re msg. 7

I don't think the prices for Nethouse are high. However there do seem to be some who are saying that customer service isn't all it could be especially if you need to speak to someone in English. Are they really geared up for this. Is the cost of installation really only 50TL? What do you get for that. This is one of the reasons I'm concerned about if changing to another ISP. Would I be able to contact H&N computers for support or are you only interested in customers before you've sold a package? I'm not knocking H&N but just want to establish your ongoing role.

I'm currently with Bortec & have been for 2 yrs. The customer service is excellent, no problems with contact but although year 1 was very good, year 2 (nearing it's end) has involved inconsistent speed, a problem that I've not been able to resolve to date.

What I will say is that unlike my 3 dreadful months with Extend, Bortec has been on most of the time with minor blips. Extend was off most of the time.

contd.

contd.

Extend's customer service was appalling & much of my experience for 3 mths with them, in late 2007, I would describe with words that are unprintable. I broke my contract after 3 mths & they didn't argue. However their high installation charge at that time was wasted.

So H&N, can you reassure me about the level of customer service? Also as well as download speeds, can you please confirm the upload speed with each download band?

Does Nethouse work okay everywhere? I'm at the Arapkoy end of Catalkoy.

Hi bazibrush. I do have a phone line & would go on to ADSL like a shot, If I I had a reliable landline. My landline is currently our of order & has been for 3 monhs since the end of August. This is the second period of outage this year. It was out of order for 3 months between January & March too. I still have to keep paying the bill though.

If you can tell me how to get the Telephone dept., to repair it & several other neighbours phones too, I'd be delighted. I've been thinking of going down to Girne, taking my clothes off out side the Telephone Exchange & selling tickets for Charity for highlight this problem. On second thoughts I may just tell them to stuff their phone service where the sun don't shine. Having paid approx 500 million back in 2002 to get the phone on in the first place & loads of hassle too, I'm loathe to do this yet.

think if i were nethouse i would entice customers to my service by offering one month free as a trial ! they sound good but so did the monkeys i'm with at mo ! i am constantly asking them to upgrade my speed from 512 to 1024 and have paid a year in advance yet they seem to forget to do it as they are too busy playing online poker to take me seriously ! if i am not sorted within the next 24 hours i will name and shame them on this forum and advise anyone else to steer very cleare of this mickey mouse org !! sorry mick ! sometimes i cannot help but lose my temper and crush the occasional grape ! sorry grape !!

Dee

Sorry to hear that you are having problems with Bortec too. I can't say that I find that I get bullshit but what do I know. When I had a major problem, they came the same day. However bad they are, they knock spots off Extend.

It seems that everyone has different experiences with different ISPs & it seems to depend on where you live. I do believe that some of the problems here are down to the apalling Telecoms dept. in general & their control of some of the masts & receivers at the Telephone exchange. As far as I'm concerned The Telefon Dairessi is ripe for instant privatisation. They are like BT years ago before BT, only worse.

We did have a very good 2008 with Arinet & Bortec. I can't say that 2009 has been as good though. Still better though, than my number 1 hate EXTEND. Did they make my life a misery!!!

So how do we establish who is best? A free trial seems like a good idea but I can't see it happening in the TRNC. All the money spent on ADSL was such a waste.

I don't even want a free month. If they will waive the installation charge, I will try & pay them for 1 month whilst still paying Bortec for just 1 month. This would enable to the 2 companies to compete for my business.

Competition is something sadly missing in the TRNC. So H&N or any other agents reading this thread, get Nethouse to play ball & take me up on my offer? What have you got to lose.

btw. I notice that H&N haven't been back since their plug for Nethouse?

But please, please don't take on on more business than you can provide for, so all your existing customers find their speeds drop. This is another problem here & not just here by all accounts. It seems that ISPs in the UK. don't always provide what you pay for either!!!

I had BT dial up in the UK. That was rubbish too. Remember that Broadband in the UK. was expensive at the beginning of the Millenium even in the UK.

Cost & quality of service don't seem to go hand in hand, in the ISP business.

I've heard that Nethouse doesn't give good results everywhere. Heavily used in Girne. Will people who recommend Nethouse indicate roughly where they live?

Internet club did come to a sticky end.

I,ve used Nethouse for almost two years - Live in Alsancak on the road up to the Black Olive Cafe. I have no problems apart from holes gouged out of house walls with installation and then when they needed to move the dish they left the metal bracket still hanging on the wall (they come back tomorrow to fix!!) but internet very seldom down (hope I have not spooked it by saying that). When they started you had to pay a year up front plus installation cost but now they are happy to accept monthly payment - I pay every three months - those stairs to their office are a killer!! I always find the girls in the office very pleasant and on the couple of times I have needed an engineer the response has been prompt and they came when they said they would.

Being in the business within the UK, I would always opt for a Cable product (also know as fibre optic) if available, this will give you the best speeds of any internet service, residential speeds offered now in the UK range between 10mb - 50mb with 200mb due to be launched next year. However, I'm not sure if Cable is yet an option in TRNC. My second choice would be ADSL, but as previous have mentioned, the quality of this is very dependent on the quality of your phone line and most importantly, the distance your home is from the telephone exchange... i.e. the further you are the slower speeds you'll achieve. A distance further than 5KM will mean your service is probably no better than the final option, Mobile Broadband. This seems to be a popular option in NC but can be costly 140TL a month for 1Mb connection seems very high and it's always worth remembering, no matter where you are (UK or NC), the advertised speeds are always "Up To" and not "Actual" speeds.

Interesting message TinLondon.

Have you been to the TRNC? We are still in the 20th century. Maybe in 10 yrs time 21C. No cable here. ADSL arrived 2 years ago but landlines are very unreliable. I would have no problem with ADSL if I could get my landline fixed & always on. The wire gets dug up every few months by a JCB because they don't have a clue where anything is here. I have visions of a 65+ TC , 2 years ago digging in the soil for both ends of the landline wire in the height of summer. The Telephone dept. said they couln't help because the local council had severed the line whilst trying to repair a water leak. This is true. In the end the council found the 2 ends & the telephone dept. repaired the cable. This is what it is like here - hopeless.

Mobile broadband is hopeless too so we rely on expensive broadband via mast & dish.

Scruff, we were happy with Bortec until about 3 wks ago. Bortec is the installer for Arinet and it has been over subscribed subsequently there is no bandwidth left, we are on the internet from early in the morning till mid morning then we are on for 3 secs and off for ages and so it goes on, Bortec has done nothing but bullshit us, why cant they just tell us the truth instead of lying and fobbing us off, Kev knew it was oversubscribed and they have taken money for a service they know they cannot supply, which they have now admitted ..I would have had more respect if we had been told the truth.

We will not use Bortec or recommend him anyone.

I should have said it is far longer than 3 weeks as it was very slow for months, getting worse by the day and now is virtually unusable after 11 am.

This is also Arinets fault for the reasons in my post above re Bortec Communications.

Hi dee. I hear what you say & your experience is similar to ours only yours is worse. We aren't off much but we are on & off for seconds, minutes & the service is very slow. Whereabouts do you live & do you know which mast your squarial is pointing to?

This is starting to seem like the Extend problem all over again. It was always my feeling that they were oversubscribed.

Used Extend for about 4 years now. Although there has been periods where the connection has been slow & laggy, & ocasionally none existent (sometimes turkish telecoms fault, sometimes not). I do seem to be getting a lot of packet loss & slow connection in the day just lately.

Support is also rubbish.

Big Pro. is that they dont restrict or mess around with download rates, such as packet shaping to restrict P2P downloading, or enforce daily data download limits.

One thing i really do like about Extend is the ping rate relative to the UK. which averages for me from between 90 to 120 miliseconds! I havent seen any other ISP's here that can better that.

Although i admit i dont know Nethouse's ping rate.

Hi Catalkoy kid

We are not all that far from you then. We are the Catalkoy edge of the mountain road up towards Arapkoy. Which is mast 28? We are given to understand that we are pointing towards a mast on the top of the telephone exchange in Girne? Our problems have only really started late this summer & 2008 was fine all year.

Haypem the electrical shop opposite Green Garage at Alsancak does 1MB internet for 70TL a month, or 60TL if you pay 6 months up front. A friend has had this for about 3 months now and is very happy with it. She needs it for work and getting consistent speeds is important. No problems at all so far and I don't believe they charge anything for installation. She changed to them from Bortec, better speeds and less than half the price.

Well, The story continues................after loads of phone calls to the shop..................never got through to call centre...........I was asked to take router for checking.............during the few days without it I could not access internet and spent more money trying to speak to someone..........no joy.

Then had a call from shop saying router was back and was ok.no fault but I needed an extra bit.HER WORDS NOT MINE.

When I got to the shop the EXTRA bit was a bigger aerial to go in the back of the router which they wanted to charge me ANOTHER YTL50 for.

THIS I REFUSED TO DO. I had already paid 50ytl for installation 275 ytl for 3 months and 150 bytl for the router.

I live in Ozankoy , just round the corner from the Patina restaurant and for 1 month had no problem, so I asked why I should have to pay extra.............

I asked if I could borrow the extra aerial to try it BUT NO CAN`T DO THAT.

So we are back to sitting in the same room as the wireless router. The ONLY benefit is that we can use 2 laptops rather than one.

I told the girl in office that if it is not sorted I will NOT be extending my 3 months contract......

And still no call back from technical guys.

My friend nearby just went to Girne and got a dongle for a year which u can use anywhere not just your house and has had no probs................so sorry NETHOUSE unless you sort pretty quick you have lost out on an extended contract.

Thought everyone would like to know............................after a lot of help from H&n Computers ..........and 3...yes 3 visits from engineer..................................they put new, well replacement dish on roof, which didn`t solkve the problem.............then finally the last engineer agreed it was the router, brought replacement router, no better, then brought BIGGER AERIAL FOR ROUTER which made it better ( this was the one they wanted me to pay extra for ).

The problem was he came on the last day of my contract ...........................so I used their internet page to renew for 1 month.....................but it did not register on their system....and after several calls AGAIN to the office I had to make YET ANOTHER TRIP TO THE OFFICE AND SHOW THEM ON THEIR COMPUTER THE DEBIT ON MY CREDIT CARD.

They have now given 1 month from yesterday...........so we will see what this month brings...............

Seriously tempted to use Telsim dongle.......................

I have been on Extend ADSL for about 18 months and no problem so far but I am not a demanding customer i.e. not much download work. However on my wish list is to be able to use the available hot spots on the same account when not at home.

Alternatively can I buy hot spot service based on how much traffic I have or on number of hours spread over a few months? I simply want to check my e.mails when I am not at home and may be get on the forums occasionally.

I agree with Ismet we have been with extend since we came here 4 yrs and apart from a few very small hiccups problem yok.

However since i have not used any other apart from a sojourn to 3G (when it first started and prior to them stiching everybody up) it is hard to compare.

We are in direct sight to the merit which reputably is the best node (think that's the correct term).

But it would be nice to be able to use the hot spots when we are not at home.

now i can comment on my thread. having had extend 2gb speed at home and having 2gb speed at my office from nethouse.

When you phone extend customer service that is quite good and helpful,as for there internet service and consistant speed what i was paying for, that is total rubbish, speed never consistant, paying for 2gb,was getting 0.58. 0.89.sometimes if i was lucky id get just under 2gb.ive now left extend, total rubbish in my opinion, and not getting what id been paying for.

Now nethouse networks, super speed, very consistant, telephone service not so good, but in saying that i do not need to call them very much,so all in all nethouse gives what your paying for.

We've had Extend since we came, first through Internet club and now Gwyn and Paul manage it for us - no problems basically, and if there are any they come through with answers pretty fast. Internet fine always (well, almost always!!) but tv sometimes erratic-but thats being sorted.

We've been with Sunny Cyprus for last three years. Reasonable prices, excellent back-up and touch wood no major problems.

I am not a fan of extend but have been with them now through Paul and Gwyn for quite a long time. Extend have been connecting their base stations with fibre optic cables so the only wireless part is from my roof to the Mercure and the speed is much more reliable since last week. Customer relations with extend is still fairly non existant but Paul will deal with most things. My contract is nearly up and because of the modifications I will stay with extend
